Substanz (Substance, Hegel)
Substanz — substance — is the first moment of the Dritter Abschnitt (Wirklichkeit) of the Doctrine of Essence (GW 11 raw 6181–6206, with the cardinal Spinoza-Anmerkung at raw 5951–5989). Substance is Spinoza's principle taken with utmost seriousness and shown to be incomplete: "Bestimmtheit ist Negation" but Spinoza stops at negation as quality and never reaches negation as self-negating negation.
The Wirklichkeit-section's progression Substanz → Causalität → Wechselwirkung is structurally a re-enactment of Spinozism's internal limits. Wechselwirkung dissolves into the Begriff at raw 6397, closing the entire Doctrine of Essence with the exit from substance-metaphysics into the realm of the Concept.
Key Points
- Substance is Spinoza's principle, taken seriously. "Bestimmtheit ist Negation" — Hegel reads this as "wahrhafte und einfache Einsicht" (true and simple insight, raw 5951). Substance is the absolute principle of philosophy — but only as moment, not as standpoint.
- The five deficiencies of Spinozistic substance (the Modus-Anmerkung, GW 11 raw 5951–5989):
- Reflexion remains external to substance.
- The Attributes (Denken, Ausdehnung) are empirically taken up rather than derived.
- The Modus is given without development.
- The Persönlichkeit-principle is lacking.
- The order Substanz → Attribut → Modus is mere enumeration with no innere Folge.
- The cardinal sentence: "Spinoza bleibt bey der Negation als Bestimmtheit oder Qualität stehen; er geht nicht zur Erkenntniß derselben als absoluter, das heißt, sich negirender Negation fort" (raw 5953). See bestimmte-negation.
- The Leibnizian monad as partial corrective. Monad has Reflexion-in-sich that substance lacks — but its limitations are prästabilirt by another being, not self-generated. See leibniz.
- The oriental Emanation-doctrine has the opposite problem: a Verlust of light (loss), not a return into the source.
- Substance manifests by setzen / aufheben of accidents (raw 6195) — Substantialität-Verhältniß is the categorial relation where substance is the persistent through the changing of accidents.
- Substance is aufgehoben in Wechselwirkung, which is the exit into the Begriff. The Wirklichkeit-section's closure into the Begriff at raw 6397 is the categorial Aufhebung of Spinozism.
- A complete philosophy of the Absolute would have substance, Reflexion-in-sich, and the negativity of self-determination — which only the Begriff has.
What the Concept Does
- It locates Spinoza's principle as moment, not standpoint. Substance is preserved as categorial truth, sublated as ultimate.
- It catalogues the five deficiencies of Spinozistic substance with surgical precision (the Modus-Anmerkung).
- It grounds the Substantialität-Causalität-Wechselwirkung progression that closes the Doctrine of Essence.
- It anchors Hegel's most extended Spinoza-engagement. GW 11 raw 5951 is the cardinal site; the engagement is the test case for Hegel's wahre Widerlegung doctrine. See wahre-widerlegung.
- It opens the categorial bridge to the Begriff — Wechselwirkung dissolves into the Concept, closing the Objective Logic.
What It Rejects
- Spinozistic substance as final standpoint — preserved as moment, transcended as ultimate.
- The Leibnizian monad as adequate alternative — monad has Reflexion-in-sich but its limitations are prästabilirt.
- The oriental Emanation-doctrine as Verlust of light.
- The two-world reading of substance and appearance — substance manifests by setzen/aufheben of accidents, not by remaining behind them.
- External eristic refutation of Spinozism — Spinoza can only be refuted from within, by wahre Widerlegung.
Connections
- is the categorial home of Spinoza's substance principle — preserved as moment, transcended as ultimate
- transitions through Causalität into Wechselwirkung — the closing triad of the Doctrine of Essence
- is corrected by Leibniz's monad (Reflexion-in-sich) but the monad itself is inadequate
- is aufgehoben in Wechselwirkung → the Begriff (raw 6377–6397)
- embodies the test case for wahre Widerlegung — substance can only be refuted from within
- lacks the negation-of-negation that bestimmte-negation articulates — Spinoza stops at negation as quality
- contrasts with the Idea — the Idea has substance + Reflexion-in-sich + self-determining negativity; substance has only the first
Open Questions
- Does Hegel's five-fold catalogue accurately track Spinoza's Ethica? Contemporary Spinoza-scholarship (Macherey, Della Rocca, Garrett) has reopened most of the questions Hegel treats as settled. Whether Spinoza's substance is really lacking Reflexion-in-sich, really enumerating without innere Folge — these are contested.
- What is the relation between Hegel's Substanz-Causalität-Wechselwirkung and Kant's three Relationskategorien (substance, causality, reciprocity)? Hegel's reading is that the Aufhebung in Wechselwirkung is the self-cancellation of Kant's whole table.
- Does the 20th-century Spinoza-revival (Macherey, Deleuze, Negri) successfully invert Hegel's verdict? Spinozistic immanence is often read as the corrective to Hegelian transcendence — but the relation to the WdL Modus-Anmerkung is rarely thematized.
