Baruch Spinoza

Dutch-Jewish rationalist philosopher (1632–1677), author of the Ethica ordine geometrico demonstrata (1677) and the Tractatus theologico-politicus (1670). On the wiki, Spinoza enters as the single most extensively engaged early-modern philosopher in Hegel's Wissenschaft der Logik after Kant — appearing in the Doctrine of Being (Daseyn-Anmerkung on omnis determinatio est negatio, GW 21 raw 1801), at the close of the Doctrine of Being (Indifferenz-section as Hegel's reconstruction of Spinozistic substance, GW 21 raw 5400–5571), as the central interlocutor of the Wirklichkeit-section (the Modus-Anmerkung at GW 11 raw 5951 — Hegel's most extended Spinoza-critique in the corpus), and as the figure whose wahre Widerlegung organizes the opening of the Doctrine of the Concept (GW 12 pp. 13–16).

Key Points

  • The omnis determinatio est negatio formula (Letter 50 to Jelles, June 1674): Hegel cites at GW 21 raw 1801 ("Die Bestimmtheit ist die Negation als affirmativ gesetzt, ist der Satz des Spinoza: Omnis determinatio est negatio, dieser Satz ist von unendlicher Wichtigkeit"). Hegel radicalizes the formula: where Spinoza treats determination as privation of the absolute, Hegel makes negation the engine of determinacy itself.
  • Substance as the speculative principle, but incomplete. Hegel's most-extended Spinoza-engagement (Anmerkung to Modus, GW 11 raw 5951): Spinoza correctly identifies substance as the absolute principle of philosophy, but stops at negation as quality and never reaches negation as self-negating negation. Substance therefore lacks Reflexion-in-sich; only the Begriff has it.
  • Substance is necessary station, not error. Spinoza cannot be refuted from outside; only the immanent dialectic of substance into Concept counts as wahre Widerlegung. See wahre-widerlegung.
  • The Indifferenz-section reconstructs Spinozistic substance as "the last determination of Sein before it becomes Wesen" (GW 11 raw 3909) — Spinoza is preserved as a categorial moment of the Logic itself, not as a competing system.
  • Spinozism is abstract pantheism (GW 21 Anm. 1 to Werden, raw 1344): "Diese abstracte Identität ist das Wesen des Pantheismus." The Eleatic pure Sein and Spinozistic substance both terminate in the Identitätssystem that refuses Werden.
  • The geometric method (ordine geometrico) is criticized as importing mathematics' externality into philosophy (GW 11 raw 981); Wolff inherits this defect from Spinoza.

Spinoza in the Three Volumes of the WdL

GW 21 (Doctrine of Being, 1832 revision)

  • Anm. 1 to Werden (raw 1334–1356): Spinozism as Identitätssystem = abstrakter Pantheismus; the Parmenidean and Spinozistic readings of "only Being" / "only Substance" both refuse Werden and so collapse to tautology.
  • Daseyn-Anmerkung (raw 1801): "Omnis determinatio est negatio" cited as of infinite importance. Hegel notes the formula's two readings: as Spinoza intends it (negation as privation that the absolute lacks) and as Hegel radicalizes it (negation as the engine of determinacy). The nothwendige Consequenz of determinatio = negatio on Spinoza's reading is the monistic collapse: "nur Eine Substanz ist" (raw 1803).
  • Quantum-Anmerkungen (calculus section, raw 3500–4400): Spinoza's geometric method critiqued as importing the Eins-Anzahl externality into philosophy.
  • Indifferenz-section (closing of Maß, raw 5400–5571): "absolute Indifferenz" is Hegel's reconstruction of Spinozistic substance as a categorial moment — the last determination of Sein before it becomes Wesen. This is Spinoza-preserved-by-being-located-within-the-Logic, not Spinoza-refuted.

GW 11 (Doctrine of Essence, 1813 — the cardinal Spinoza-Anmerkung)

  • The Modus-Anmerkung (raw 5951–5989) — Hegel's most extended Spinoza-critique in the corpus. Five deficiencies catalogued:

    1. Reflexion remains external to substance (substance does not generate its own reflective movement).
    2. The Attributes (Denken, Ausdehnung) are empirically taken up rather than derived.
    3. The Modus is given without development (Spinoza enumerates rather than develops).
    4. The Persönlichkeit-principle is lacking (substance is not yet subject).
    5. The order Substanz → Attribut → Modus is mere enumeration with no innere Folge.

The cardinal sentence: "Spinoza bleibt bey der Negation als Bestimmtheit oder Qualität stehen; er geht nicht zur Erkenntniß derselben als absoluter, das heißt, sich negirender Negation fort" (raw 5953).

  • Wechselwirkung-closure (raw 6377–6397): the exit from Substanz into the Begriff through Wechselwirkung is the categorial Aufhebung of Spinozism. Necessity becomes freedom — "die Nothwendigkeit wird nicht dadurch zur Freyheit, daß sie verschwindet, sondern daß nur ihre noch innre Identität manifestirt wird" (raw 6395).

GW 12 (Doctrine of the Concept, 1816)

  • Vom Begriff im allgemeinen (pp. 13–16): Spinoza as the necessary penultimate stage before the Concept. The wahre Widerlegung doctrine is formulated here against external eristic refutation.
  • Recurring touchstone: Spinozistic substance is the structural reference for every discussion of necessity-and-freedom; the Leibnizian monad is positioned as the corrective (monad has Reflexion-in-sich that substance lacks) but itself remains inadequate because its limitations are prästabilirt by another being, not self-generated.

Argumentative Role in the Wiki

Spinoza functions on the wiki as:

  1. The substance-pole counterpart to Kant's subjectivity-pole. Hegel's WdL is structured by a bilateral engagement — Kant as the inheritor of the dialectic of reflection (subjectivity), Spinoza as the inheritor of the dialectic of substance (objectivity). The Concept is the Aufhebung of both poles.
  2. The originator of the negation-as-determinacy doctrine. Omnis determinatio est negatio is the seed Hegel radicalizes into bestimmte Negation and the dialectical engine of all transitions.
  3. The test case for wahre Widerlegung. Spinozism cannot be refuted from outside; only the immanent dialectic of substance into Concept counts. The methodological principle (a system is refuted only from within) is formulated with reference to Spinoza and organizes Hegel's engagement with every predecessor.
  4. The cardinal interlocutor of the Doctrine of Essence. The Wirklichkeit-section's progression Substanz → Causalität → Wechselwirkung is structurally a re-enactment of Spinozism's internal limits.

Connections

  • bequeaths the formula *omnis determinatio est negatio* to Hegel, who radicalizes it from privation-of-absolute into engine-of-determinacy
  • is the speculative principle of Substanz in the Doctrine of Essence — substance as the absolute principle of philosophy
  • is dialectically superseded by der Begriff through the wahre Widerlegung doctrine
  • is preserved as a categorial moment in the Indifferenz-section closing the Doctrine of Being — not refuted, but located
  • is corrected by Leibniz's monad, which has Reflexion-in-sich that substance lacks; but Leibniz himself is inadequate because the monad's limitations are prästabilirt externally
  • contrasts with Kant as the substance-pole counterpart to Kant's subjectivity-pole — the bilateral structure of Hegel's WdL
  • is associated with Parmenides in Hegel's reading of Identitätssystem / abstract pantheism (Anm. 1 to Werden, GW 21 raw 1344)

Open Questions

  • Does Hegel's Spinoza-reception accurately track Spinoza's own positions? Contemporary Spinoza-scholarship (Macherey, Deleuze, Della Rocca) presses on this: Hegel's omnis determinatio est negatio reading is contested as a misreading; the Modus-Anmerkung's catalogue of deficiencies may misdescribe what Spinoza intends. The wiki does not yet have a dedicated Spinoza-scholarship cluster.
  • How does Hegel's Spinoza-engagement relate to the post-1929 Spinoza-revival (Macherey, Deleuze, Negri)? The 20th-century Spinoza-revival often inverts Hegel's verdict: Spinozistic immanence is read as the corrective to Hegelian transcendence. This receptive history is not yet on the wiki.
  • What is the relation between the WdL's Spinoza-engagement and Hegel's Jena-period writings on Spinoza? The 1801 Differenzschrift and the lectures on the history of philosophy give other Spinoza-readings; their continuity with the WdL Anmerkungen is a live scholarly question.
