Wechselwirkung (Reciprocal Action, Hegel)

Wechselwirkung — reciprocal action — is the closing category of the Doctrine of Essence (GW 11 raw 6377–6397). Hegel's signature claim: Wechselwirkung is not the truth — it is the dissolution of the Causalitätsverhältnis but not itself the resting place. It transitions immediately into the Begriff because in Wechselwirkung "die Causalität ist zu ihrem absoluten Begriffe zurückgekehrt, und zugleich zum Begriffe selbst gekommen."

The closing line of the entire Doctrine of Essence: "Diß ist der Begriff, das Reich der Subjectivität oder der Freyheit" (raw 6397). The transition into the Subjective Logic is the self-cancellation of substance-and-cause. Necessity passes into freedom — not by being negated but by being transparently grasped: "die Nothwendigkeit wird nicht dadurch zur Freyheit, daß sie verschwindet, sondern daß nur ihre noch innre Identität manifestirt wird" (raw 6395).

This is the most-contested transition in Hegel scholarship. The WechselwirkungBegriff move is structurally the exit of the Objective Logic into the Subjective — the categorial bridge between substance-metaphysics and Concept-logic.

Key Points

  • Wechselwirkung is not the truth — it is the dissolution. Where each substance is at once active and passive, the cause/effect distinction has fully collapsed; what remains is no longer causality but the structure of the Begriff (universality, particularity, individuality, each containing the others).
  • Necessity passes into freedom — not by negation but by transparent grasping. Absolute necessity is "blind" because each of its actualities is "in sich gegründet, für sich gestaltet" with no Reflex onto the other. But this very self-grounding is the Maal (mark) necessity has placed on them; reading the mark manifests necessity, and it ceases to be blind.
  • The closing line (raw 6397): "Diß ist der Begriff, das Reich der Subjectivität oder der Freyheit" — this is the Concept, the realm of subjectivity or freedom.
  • Against Kant's three Relationskategorien. Kant treats Wechselwirkung as one of three categories of relation in the Critique of Pure Reason, alongside substance and causality, on the same footing. For Hegel, Wechselwirkung is the self-cancellation of that whole table.
  • The Spinoza-Aufhebung. The Wirklichkeit-section's progression Substanz → Causalität → Wechselwirkung is structurally the Aufhebung of Spinozism. The exit into the Begriff is the categorial Aufhebung of Spinoza by entering his strength.
  • Anti-naturalistic claim about causality and spirit. GW 11 raw 6249–6277: causality is not properly applied to organic life or to spirit. "Cäsars Ehrgeitz als die Ursache des Untergangs der republikanischen Verfassung Roms" — unstatthaft. Spirit "nicht ein anderes ursprüngliches in sich aufzunehmen … sondern sie abzubrechen und zu verwandeln." See blind-vs-manifested-necessity.
  • The Maal / mark figure. Necessity manifests by leaving a trace; the trace, read, transforms necessity into freedom. Anticipates the transparency doctrine of the Subjective Logic.

What the Concept Does

  1. It closes the Doctrine of Essence by dissolving substance-and-cause. The closing categorial movement is exit, not consolidation.
  2. It articulates the necessity-passes-into-freedom doctrine. Not by negation but by transparent grasping; the Maal / mark figure carries the categorial logic.
  3. It transitions into the Begriff — the Reich der Subjectivität oder der Freyheit. This is the architecturally cardinal transition of the WdL: the exit from Objective Logic into Subjective.
  4. It refutes Kant's categorial table by showing that Wechselwirkung is not parallel to substance and causality but the self-cancellation of all three.
  5. It anchors the anti-naturalistic doctrine about spirit. Causality does not apply to spirit; the Cäsars-Ehrgeitz example (raw 6269) is unstatthaft. See blind-vs-manifested-necessity.

What It Rejects

  • Wechselwirkung as parallel categorial relation alongside substance and causality (Kant's table).
  • Causality as applicable to spirit — the Cäsars-Ehrgeitz example is unstatthaft.
  • Buckle-style historical materialism avant la lettre — causal explanation of historical events (e.g., "Jonian climate as cause of Homeric works").
  • Spinozist necessitarianism as final stance — freedom is not recognition-of-necessity-period but manifested necessity.
  • Kantian freedom-as-noumenal vs. necessity-as-phenomenal — freedom is manifested necessity, not exemption from it.

Connections

  • is the closing category of the Doctrine of Essence (GW 11 raw 6377–6397)
  • transitions into the Begriff — "Diß ist der Begriff, das Reich der Subjectivität oder der Freyheit"
  • is the dissolution of Substanz and Causalität — the Wirklichkeit-section's closing triad
  • articulates the necessity-passes-into-freedom doctrine
  • embodies the categorial Aufhebung of Spinoza — substance is aufgehoben through Wechselwirkung into the Concept
  • refutes Kant's three Relationskategorien — Wechselwirkung is not parallel but self-cancellation
  • is the architecturally cardinal transition in the *Wissenschaft der Logik* — Objective → Subjective Logic
  • anchors Hegel's freedom doctrine — freedom as manifested necessity, not exemption from it

Open Questions

  • Is the Wechselwirkung → Begriff transition philosophically sound, or is it the most-contested transition in Hegel scholarship? Adorno's Negative Dialectics presses on exactly this seam: the Versöhnung of Wechselwirkung's dissolution in the Begriff falsely sutures real contradictions.
  • What is the relation between Hegel's necessity-passes-into-freedom and Spinoza's libertas = necessitatis cognitio (freedom = recognition of necessity)? Hegel's "manifested necessity" is more than Spinozistic recognition — but how much more, and on what categorial grounds?
  • Does the WdL's anti-causality claim about spirit survive Hegel's own later Philosophy of History? Hegel's lectures on history deploy causal vocabulary about historical events; whether the WdL claim survives that deployment is a live question. See claims#causality-not-applicable-to-spirit (live claim).
