Gegensatz (Opposition, Hegel)
Gegensatz — opposition (positive / negative) — is the third of the four Reflexionsbestimmungen in the Doctrine of Essence (GW 11 raw 4724 ff.). Gegensatz introduces positive and negative as moments that each contain the other: positive is positive only through its relation to negative; negative is negative only through its relation to positive. The entgegengesetzten as each containing its other generate Widerspruch — the completion of the Reflexionsbestimmung-sequence.
The arithmetic Anmerkung at raw 4762 gives the positional logic: the +a / -a logic of addition/subtraction (where +a and -a externally cancel: +a + (-a) = 0) vs. multiplication/division (where +a × -a internally generates -a²: the negative quantity raised to a positive square). The positional logic is the categorial demonstration that opposition is internal — multiplication shows opposites generating each other rather than externally cancelling.
Key Points
- Gegensatz introduces positive / negative. The third Reflexionsbestimmung; each opposite contains the other as moment.
- Emerges from Verschiedenheit. Verschiedenheit unmoored from any third collapses into Gegensatz — opposition is internal difference, not externally mediated.
- Each entgegengesetzte contains its other. Positive is positive only through its relation to negative; negative is negative only through its relation to positive. Neither side stands alone.
- The arithmetic Anmerkung (raw 4762). Addition/subtraction: +a + (-a) = 0 — externally cancelling. Multiplication/division: +a × -a = -a² — internally generating. The positional logic shows opposition as internally generative.
- Transitions to Widerspruch. The entgegengesetzten, each containing its other, generate Widerspruch — the categorial completion. See widerspruch-hegel.
- Re-deployed in Substanz / Accidenz (raw 6188) — the polar opposition that closes Wesen.
- Re-deployed in Causalität. Cause and effect as entgegengesetzte; the polar opposition that Wechselwirkung dissolves.
What the Concept Does
- It articulates the third Reflexionsbestimmung. Each opposite contains the other; opposition is internal, not external.
- It demonstrates positional logic categorially. The +a / -a arithmetic Anmerkung shows opposition as internally generative.
- It transitions to Widerspruch. Opposites containing each other generate contradiction.
- It re-deploys throughout the Wesen-section. Substanz / Accidenz and Cause / Effect both turn on the Gegensatz-structure.
What It Rejects
- Externally-cancelling opposition as the basic structure (the +a + (-a) = 0 picture).
- The dichotomy as final categorial form — opposites containing each other deepen into contradiction.
- The Kantian table of Gegensätze (logical, real, transcendental) taken as flat juxtaposition — Hegel reads them as graded moments.
