Reflexionsbestimmungen (Reflection-Determinations)
The four Reflexionsbestimmungen of difference — Identität, Verschiedenheit, Gegensatz, Widerspruch — form a single graded sequence in which difference deepens until it becomes contradiction, and contradiction dissolves into Grund. Located in the first Abschnitt of the Doctrine of Essence (GW 11 raw 4574–4920), the four-fold is the core grammar of the Wesen-book: every subsequent move in the Doctrine of Essence — through Grund, Existenz, Erscheinung, Wirklichkeit, Substanz — is in some way an application or recomplication of the Reflexionsbestimmungen.
Crucially, the four are not coordinate species of "difference" in formal logic. They are graded moments of a single dialectical sequence: identity-that-distinguishes-itself-from-difference is already Verschiedenheit; verschiedenheit unmoored from any third collapses into Gegensatz (positive/negative); the entgegengesetzten as each containing its other generate Widerspruch; Widerspruch as "sich selbst ausschliessende Reflexion" löst sich auf and what is left is Grund.
Key Points
- Four moments, one sequence. Identität → Verschiedenheit → Gegensatz → Widerspruch → dissolution into Grund. The gradedness is the doctrine; treating the four as coordinate species (formal-logical move) destroys it.
- Identität is absolute Nichtidentität (GW 11 raw 4598): "Die Identität ist also an ihr selbst absolute Nichtidentität." To assert pure identity is to draw a distinction against difference — which the assertion of pure identity cannot tolerate.
- Verschiedenheit and the principle of indiscernibles. Leibniz's "Es gibt nicht zwey Dinge, die einander vollkommen gleich sind" (raw 4708) is engaged here — taken as the principle that Verschiedenheit is primitive, against Hegel's reading of it as graded into Gegensatz.
- Gegensatz introduces positive/negative. The arithmetic Anmerkung at raw 4762 (the +a / -a logic of addition/subtraction vs. multiplication/division) gives the positional logic of opposition. Each entgegengesetzte contains its other.
- Widerspruch is the root of all motion and life (raw 4887): "Alle Dinge sind an sich selbst widersprechend … er aber ist die Wurzel aller Bewegung und Lebendigkeit." The Zeno paradoxes are correct and the conclusion is: motion is contradiction. See widerspruch-hegel.
- Widerspruch dissolves into Grund. The "sich selbst ausschliessende Reflexion" löst sich auf, and what is left as the ground of the dissolution is Grund itself — the Reflexionsbestimmung that immediately marks itself as aufgehoben.
- The four are synthetic, not analytic. GW 11 Anmerkung at raw 4634: "nicht bloß analytischer, sondern synthetischer Natur" — the Reflexionsbestimmungen, raised to propositions, contain absolute difference / contradiction within themselves.
- Against the Wolffian Schullogik. The doctrine breaks decisively with the Wolff-Baumgarten treatment of the principia (identity, contradiction, sufficient reason, excluded middle) as analytic Denkgesetze. Each principle when raised to a proposition immediately generates its opposite.
The Four in Sequence
1. Identität (raw 4574 ff.)
The first Reflexionsbestimmung: "A = A". But the analysis shows that pure identity is empty — to say anything (e.g., "die Pflanze ist – eine Pflanze", raw 4620) is to promise a determination, then fail to deliver one; the Langeweile (boredom) at "A = A" is the immediate phenomenology of the contradiction. "Die Identität ist also an ihr selbst absolute Nichtidentität" (raw 4598).
The Satz der Identität and Satz des Widerspruchs are not analytic but synthetic: they contain the absolute difference within themselves. See identitaet-hegel.
2. Verschiedenheit (raw 4660 ff.)
Verschiedenheit is difference held externally — two terms held apart by a third (the "Insofern", "Seiten und Rücksichten" of common sense). Leibniz's principle of indiscernibles (raw 4708) is engaged here as the post-Cartesian high-water mark of treating Verschiedenheit as primitive.
But Verschiedenheit is unstable: unmoored from any third (which is always external), it collapses into Gegensatz (positive/negative). See verschiedenheit-hegel.
3. Gegensatz (raw 4724 ff.)
Opposition. The arithmetic Anmerkung at raw 4762: the +a / -a logic of addition/subtraction (where +a and -a externally cancel) vs. multiplication/division (where +a × -a internally generates -a²) gives the positional logic. The entgegengesetzten contain each other as moments — positive is positive only through its relation to negative.
But the entgegengesetzten, each containing its other, generate Widerspruch. See gegensatz-hegel.
4. Widerspruch (raw 4798–4920)
The completion of the sequence. "Alle Dinge sind an sich selbst widersprechend" (raw 4887). Widerspruch is "die Wurzel aller Bewegung und Lebendigkeit" — motion, drive (Trieb), appetition all require that something be in itself and lack itself "in einer und derselben Rücksicht". The Zeno paradoxes are correct; the conclusion is that motion is contradiction.
Widerspruch as "sich selbst ausschliessende Reflexion" löst sich auf — and what is left is Grund. See widerspruch-hegel.
What the Concept Does
- It gives the core grammar of the Doctrine of Essence. Every subsequent move (Grund, Existenz, Erscheinung, Wirklichkeit, Substanz) is in some way an application or recomplication of the four.
- It breaks decisively with the Wolffian Denkgesetze. Identity, contradiction, sufficient reason, excluded middle — not analytic a priori laws of thought but graded dialectical moments whose propositional form already enacts what their content denies.
- It generates the productive-contradiction doctrine. Widerspruch is positive (root of motion, life) only as the completion of the graded sequence; it is not the abstract PNC-violation that Aristotelian formal logic prohibits.
- It dissolves into Grund, supplying the bridge from Reflexion to Existenz — the rest of the Doctrine of Essence follows.
What It Rejects
- The Wolffian / Kantian treatment of the four logical principles as analytic Denkgesetze.
- Leibniz's principle of indiscernibles taken as primitive — Verschiedenheit is not the basic difference-structure.
- Aristotle's PNC as ontological law — Metaphysics Γ excludes what Hegel takes to be the root of motion.
- The reading of identity as primitive — identity is absolute Nichtidentität (raw 4598).
- Formal-logical flat juxtaposition of identity, difference, contradiction as alternative species — they are graded moments, not coordinate kinds.
Connections
- is housed in the Doctrine of Essence, first Abschnitt (GW 11 raw 4574–4920)
- develops through Identität → Verschiedenheit → Gegensatz → Widerspruch as graded moments
- dissolves into Grund — the sich selbst ausschliessende Reflexion leaves Grund as residue
- is operated by Reflexion (three moments: setzende / äußere / bestimmende)
- is the engine of bestimmte-negation — each move is a determined negation of the prior moment
- redeploys in the analysis of Grund (realer Grund as content-difference of grounds and grounded, raw 5102, 5114) and of Substanz / Accidenz (raw 6188)
- engages Leibniz (indiscernibles), Wolff (Schullogik), Aristotle (PNC), Kant (analytic / synthetic)
- is what the wiki's existing philosophy-of-reflection page should now anchor to as its uniquely authoritative WdL source
Stakes
If the doctrine is accepted:
- Formal logic loses its claim to ground philosophy — the Denkgesetze are dialectical moments, not analytic laws.
- Productive contradiction becomes intelligible as the completion of a graded sequence, not a PNC-violation.
- Spinozistic substance can be re-grounded as the unity that the four Reflexionsbestimmungen presuppose (raw 5102).
- The Doctrine of Essence's whole architecture becomes intelligible.
If rejected:
- The Doctrine of Essence loses its grammar; the rest of the Wesen-book becomes ad hoc.
- The productive-contradiction doctrine reverts to either Aristotelian PNC violation (incoherent) or external-formalist schema.
- The Hegelian-Marxist tradition of immanent critique loses its categorial home.
Open Questions
- Are the four genuinely graded, or does the gradedness presuppose what it claims to establish? This is the standard contemporary critique: the dialectical motion seems to require a prior grasp of why each moment must transition to the next.
- Does the four-fold accommodate non-dyadic difference-structures (Tarskian n-ary relations, contemporary metaphysics of properties)? The dyadic positive/negative structure of Gegensatz may be too restrictive.
- Adorno's Negative Dialectics rejects the dissolution of Widerspruch into Grund as forced reconciliation. Is the dissolution genuine, or does it conceal residual difference that Hegelian closure refuses to acknowledge?
