Wirklichkeit (Actuality, Hegel)

Wirklichkeit — actuality — is the central category of the Dritter Abschnitt of the Doctrine of Essence (GW 11 raw 5851 ff.). Wirklichkeit is higher than both Existenz and Sein; it is the manifested unity of inner and outer. Hegel's cardinal formulation: "Was wirklich ist, kann wirken" (raw 6089) — what is actual can act; its actuality manifests itself in what it brings forth.

The categorial bridge: Sein is bare immediacy; Existenz is mediated immediacy that erscheint; Wirklichkeit is the mediated immediacy whose mediation is its own manifestation. The famous practical formulation: "wenn alle Bedingungen einer Sache vollständig vorhanden sind, so tritt sie in Wirklichkeit" (raw 6105) — when all conditions of a thing are completely present, it enters actuality. Marx and the Marxist tradition would later seize on this formulation.

The modal triad operating within Wirklichkeit — Wirklichkeit / Möglichkeit / Notwendigkeit — is treated in the modal-triad page; the absolute Notwendigkeit collapses all three into "Seyn, das ist, weil es ist."

Key Points

  • Was wirklich ist, kann wirken. Hegel's cardinal formulation (raw 6089). Actuality manifests itself in agency.
  • Wirklichkeit is higher than Existenz and Sein. The categorial ascent: Sein → Daseyn → Existenz → Wirklichkeit traces the progressive integration of immediacy and mediation.
  • The Bedingung formula. "Wenn alle Bedingungen einer Sache vollständig vorhanden sind, so tritt sie in Wirklichkeit" (raw 6105) — when all conditions are present, the thing enters actuality. See bedingung-sache.
  • The modal triad. Wirklichkeit / Möglichkeit / Notwendigkeit gives the formal modal structure; absolute Notwendigkeit collapses all three into "Seyn, das ist, weil es ist." See modal-triad-hegel.
  • Anti-Spinozist necessitarianism. Hegel's Notwendigkeit is not the blind necessity of Spinozistic substance — see blind-vs-manifested-necessity.
  • Anti-Leibnizian possible worlds. Möglichkeit is not the modal-logical possibility of "world-X-could-have-been" but the categorial moment internal to Wirklichkeit.
  • Anti-Wolffian. Wirklichkeit is not the existence-following-from-non-contradiction of Wolffian rational metaphysics.
  • Was vernünftig ist, das ist wirklich; und was wirklich ist, das ist vernünftig. The famous Philosophy of Right (1820) Preface formula has its categorial home here in the WdL Wirklichkeit-doctrine — the cardinal site for understanding the Doppelsatz.

What the Concept Does

  1. It supplies the highest categorial moment of the Doctrine of Essence. Wirklichkeit is the manifested unity of inner and outer.
  2. It anchors the modal-triad doctrine. Wirklichkeit / Möglichkeit / Notwendigkeit gives the formal modal structure with absolute Notwendigkeit as its closure.
  3. It articulates the act of actuality. "Was wirklich ist, kann wirken" — actuality manifests itself in agency.
  4. It grounds the Doppelsatz ("Was vernünftig ist, das ist wirklich") of the Philosophy of Right Preface — the categorial home is here.
  5. It opens the categorial bridge to Substanz / Causalität / Wechselwirkung — the closing triad of the Doctrine of Essence.

What It Rejects

  • Spinozist necessitarianism — Notwendigkeit is manifested, not blind.
  • Leibnizian possible-worlds modality — Möglichkeit is categorial moment, not modal-logical alternative.
  • Wolffian definition of necessity from non-contradiction — Wirklichkeit's mediation is categorial, not formal-logical.
  • The Kantian noumenal-vs-phenomenal modal split — Wirklichkeit dissolves the two-world picture for modality.

Connections

  • is the central category of the Dritter Abschnitt of Wesen (GW 11 raw 5851 ff.)
  • operates with Möglichkeit / Notwendigkeit — the modal triad
  • is the categorial home of the Doppelsatz (Philosophy of Right Preface) — "Was vernünftig ist, das ist wirklich"
  • engages Bedingung — when all conditions are present, the thing enters Wirklichkeit
  • is higher than Existenz (mediated immediacy that erscheint) and Sein (bare immediacy)
  • transitions to Substanz / Causalität / Wechselwirkung — the closing triad of the Doctrine of Essence
  • anchors the manifested-necessity doctrine — anti-Spinozist necessitarianism
  • is rejected as final by Wechselwirkung's dissolution into the Begriff — Wirklichkeit is moment, not standpoint

Open Questions

  • What is the relation between the WdL Wirklichkeit-doctrine and the Philosophy of Right Preface Doppelsatz? The two formulations are clearly connected, but the precise textual continuity has been contested in the secondary literature (Marcuse, Avineri, Hardimon).
  • Does Hegel's anti-Spinozist necessitarianism survive contemporary modal metaphysics? Possible-worlds semantics (Kripke, Lewis) gives a very different account of necessity than Hegel's manifested necessity; whether the two registers can be brought into productive comparison is a live question.
  • Is the "Was vernünftig ist, das ist wirklich" formula a description or a normative claim? The standard 20th-century debate (Habermas, Hardimon, Pippin) turns on this; the categorial home in WdL Wirklichkeit clarifies it as descriptive of categorial structure, but the political-philosophical interpretation remains contested.
