Onto-Theo-Logik (Onto-Theo-Logic)
The onto-theo-logical constitution (onto-theo-logische Verfassung) names the inner structural form of all metaphysics: because Being shows itself as Grund (ground), metaphysics is simultaneously Onto-logik (grounding beings in general as Seiendes als solches im Allgemeinen) and Theo-logik (grounding the whole from the highest being as causa sui). The two are not separate disciplines joined externally but correlative moments of a single Austrag (carrying-out) of the Differenz. The God enters philosophy not by accident but because the Sache des Denkens demands it.
Key Points
- Metaphysics is Onto-Theo-Logik because Being discloses itself as Grund/Logos
- The Logos as Ἕν is "zwiefältig": the überall Erste und Allgemeine (κοινότατον) AND the Höchste (τιμιώτατον)
- Onto-logie = ergründen des Seienden im Allgemeinen; Theo-logie = begründen des Seienden im Ganzen from the Höchste
- The -Logia is not mere Folgerichtigkeit (logical correctness) but a Begründungszusammenhang (nexus of grounding)
- The God of philosophy (causa sui) is constitutively unworshipable — "Zu diesem Gott kann der Mensch weder beten, noch kann er ihm opfern" (GA 11 p. 89)
What the Concept Does
The concept performs a diagnosis: it explains why every metaphysics has always contained both an account of beings-in-general (ontology) and an account of the highest being (theology), and why these two always appear together. The answer is structural, not historical: Being's self-disclosure as Grund simultaneously requires universal grounding (→ ontology) and ultimate grounding by the highest (→ theology). The Austrag of the Differenz generates the onto-theo-logical pairing; it is not the contingent result of philosophical theology influencing ontology or vice versa.
What It Rejects
- The view that theology is an optional addition to ontology (it is a structural requirement)
- The view that the onto-theo-logical constitution is specifically Christian or modern (it is present "seit der Frühzeit des abendländischen Denkens")
- The view that the philosophical God (causa sui) is the same as the God of religious faith — the causa sui is a product of the Austrag's Umeinanderkreisen, not an encounter with divinity
- The view that philosophy can be de-theologized by simply removing God-language — the theological moment is structurally generated
Details
The Austrag as Wesensherkunft
The onto-theo-logical constitution arises from the Differenz thought as Austrag: Sein as entbergende Überkommnis (disclosing advent) and Seiendes as sich bergende Ankunft (self-concealing arrival). The Austrag holds both auseinander-zueinander and generates an Umeinanderkreisen (circling-around-each-other): Being grounds beings, and the highest being (Seiendste) in turn grounds Being as causa. This circling IS the onto-theo-logical constitution.
The Causa Sui and the Gott-loses Denken
The culminating argument: the causa sui is the "sachgerechte Name" for the God in philosophy. The thinking that surrenders this God — "gott-loses Denken" — is not atheism but the structural consequence of thinking the Differenz as Austrag. It "ist freier für ihn [den göttlichen Gott], als es die Onto-Theo-Logik wahrhaben möchte" (GA 11 p. 89). The claim is not that God does not exist but that the philosophical apparatus for thinking God (grounding-from-the-highest) structurally prevents encounter with divinity.
Cross-Reference: Hegel as Onto-Theo-Logik
Hegel's Wissenschaft der Logik is the paradigm case: it is "Logik" not because its Sache is thought (as a topic) but because Sein discloses itself as Logos/Grund, and the Logos as Begründen takes thinking-as-Begründen into its Anspruch. Hegel's speculative philosophy names itself "Logik" because the Sache (Being) presents itself under the Logos-stamp. The wiki's existing grund-hegel page operates at a different register: Hegel's WdL Grund is a specific Reflexionsbestimmung in the Wesen-section, while Heidegger's Grund is a geschicklich Wesensart of Being itself.
Connections
- is the structural form diagnosed by schritt-zurueck — the Schritt zurück goes from the onto-theo-logical constitution into its Wesensherkunft (the Austrag)
- extends ontological-difference — the Differenz thought as Austrag generates the onto-theo-logical pairing
- contrasts with grund-hegel regarding the register of Grund: Heidegger's Grund is geschicklich; Hegel's is categorial
- critiques vollendung-der-metaphysik regarding the theological moment — Vollendung includes the completion of the onto-theo-logical structure in cybernetics/technology (Heidegger's naming of technology as Technologie = metaphysics of the atomic age)
Open Questions
- Does the onto-theo-logical diagnosis apply to non-Western metaphysics? Heidegger limits it to "das abendländisch-europäische Denken" but the Kojima letter's "Europäisierung der Welt" thesis suggests the Macht des Stellens is now planetary.
- Is the gott-loses Denken a permanent condition or a transitional one? The text leaves this open.
- How does the onto-theo-logical constitution relate to the MP-side indirect-ontology project? The wiki's indirect-ontology page tracks a Blondel-mediated route to ontology that avoids the onto-theo-logical Grund-structure — but this cross-tradition comparison is not yet articulated.
Synthetic Claims
The synthetic interpretive layer (wiki/claims.md) articulates claims for which this page is a Wiki home. Live claims are cited with provisional framing per CLAUDE.md §Claims Register Format.
- live claim, see claims#braig-quelle-of-onto-theo-logik — the 1957 onto-theo-logische Verfassung thesis has a pre-1916 theological-pedagogical genealogy in Carl Braig's Vom Sein. Abriß der Ontologie (1896). Bears on this page because it reframes the OTL thesis as thematization of a long-standing tension (Ontologie vs. spekulative Theologie) rather than a late-period innovation from the 1956/57 Hegel seminar. The Mein Weg autobiographical anchor (GA 14 pp. 92–93) supplies the genealogy; this page's systematic text supplies the mature articulation.
- live claim, see claims#ga11-austrag-as-wesensherkunft-of-onto-theo-logik — the Austrag is the Wesensherkunft of the onto-theo-logical constitution. Bears on this page because it identifies GA 11's distinctive contribution: not the SuZ-operative difference, not the ZuS Es-gibt chain, but the Austrag as the movement that generates onto-logical and theo-logical as correlative moments. Randbemerkung (93) identifies Austrag with Ereignis.
