The 1957 thesis that the onto-theo-logical constitution (Onto-Theo-Logische Verfassung der Metaphysik) is the essential structure of Western metaphysics has a pre-1916 theological-pedagogical genealogy in Carl Braig's Vom Sein. Abriß der Ontologie (1896) and his teaching on Schelling, Hegel, and speculative theology at the Freiburg Theological Faculty.
