Claim

The distinction Heidegger draws between Nietzsche-as-Vollender and Nietzsche-as-Überwinder is not a doxographic detail but a structural-historical claim about what post-Nietzschean philosophy is. Überwindung (overcoming) would mean stepping out of metaphysics; Vollendung (completion) means bringing metaphysics to its full stature within its own frame. On Heidegger's reading, Nietzsche's "destruction" of moral world-order, supersensible truth, and Christian ideals does not exit metaphysics; it preserves the metaphysical structure (will, Sein-als-Anwesenheit) at the very moment of inverting its content. Therefore: post-Nietzschean philosophy that takes Nietzsche as exit-figure (Existentialism, Vattimo's pensiero debole, Deleuze's affirmation, popular reception) operates within a misreading; the genuine post-Nietzschean task is the anderer Anfang — a different relation to Being, not a continuation of will-to-power.

On a non-Heideggerian reading of will-to-power, the Vollendung-thesis does not hold — Nietzsche may be the threshold of something else entirely, not the completion of what came before.
