The "death of God" motif from Hegel's *Phenomenology* (speculative Good Friday) to Nietzsche to Heidegger forms one register-continuous lineage under different inflections — speculative-dialectical (Hegel), genealogical-cultural (Nietzsche), Seinsgeschichtlich (Heidegger)

ID: death-of-god-speculative-good-friday-lineage Title: The "death of God" motif from Hegel's Phenomenology (speculative Good Friday) to Nietzsche to Heidegger forms one register-continuous lineage under different inflections — speculative-dialectical (Hegel), genealogical-cultural (Nietzsche), Seinsgeschichtlich (Heidegger) Status: candidate Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical / cross-author Created: 2026-05-24 Updated: 2026-05-24 Sources: hegel-1807-phenomenology-spirit, heidegger-1961-nietzsche-i, heidegger-1961-nietzsche-ii Wiki homes: death-of-god, speculative-good-friday, friedrich-nietzsche, seinsgeschichte

Claim

The "death of God" motif from Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit §785 ("speculative Good Friday" — spekulativer Karfreitag) to Nietzsche's Gay Science §125 / Zarathustra ("God is dead") to Heidegger's Nietzsche I/II reading of the death-of-God as the Seinsgeschichtlich event of nihilism's Vollendung forms one register-continuous lineage under different inflections: speculative-dialectical (Hegel — the death of God as moment of absolute Spirit's self-realization through finitude); genealogical-cultural (Nietzsche — the death of God as the European cultural event whose consequences are not yet understood); Seinsgeschichtlich (Heidegger — the death of God as the completion of metaphysics, naming the same Sache the Vollendung-narrative articulates). The motifs.md entry on death-of-God + speculative Good Friday (line 698) already names the Hegel-Strauss-Feuerbach-Nietzsche chain; this candidate extends to Heidegger as the fourth term completing the lineage from speculative-dialectical to Seinsgeschichtlich.

Evidence

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The "one register-continuous lineage" reading is contestable. Hegel's speculative Good Friday is sublated (the death of God is a moment of absolute Spirit's resurrection); Nietzsche's death of God is unsublated (the cultural event with consequences-not-yet-understood); Heidegger's reading subsumes both under Vollendung. The three readings may name different operations under the same vocabulary, not one continuous register.
  • Heidegger's Nietzsche-reading is itself contested (per claims#heidegger-vs-chouraqui-on-nietzsche-leitfrage live); whether Heidegger's death-of-God reading does justice to Nietzsche's own is the standing question.
  • The Hegel-side anchoring at §785 is single-passage. The motifs.md entry cross-references Strauss, Feuerbach, and the broader 19th-c. reception, but no single Hegel passage other than §785 articulates the speculative Good Friday as a doctrinal-architectural term.
  • MP is structurally absent from this lineage. MP does not explicitly engage the death-of-God motif; the wiki's MP-side has the circulus vitiosus deus register (claims#circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology supported) but this is a distinct figure from the death-of-God lineage.

Payoff

If accepted: (a) the Hegel-Nietzsche-Heidegger cross-author trajectory gains a unified claim entry; (b) the motifs.md "death of God / speculative Good Friday" HUB entry is anchored to a register-explicit claim; (c) the Vollendung-of-metaphysics narrative (claims#vollendung-vs-uberwindung-of-metaphysics live) gains a thematic-grounding bridge to the Hegel-side; (d) the wiki's German-philosophy spine (Hegel → Nietzsche → Heidegger) gains a register-continuous motif-anchor.

Status History

  • 2026-05-24 — created at candidate under CR-019 harvest of 10 under-claimed HUB motifs. The death-of-God / speculative Good Friday HUB-motif had no claim entry naming the Hegel-Nietzsche-Heidegger lineage as register-continuous. 3-test gate partial: T1 contestable (one-register-continuous vs. three-different-operations); T2 anchored at Hegel §785 + Heidegger Nietzsche I/II + motifs.md line 698; T3 counterpressure recorded. Held at candidate awaiting either (a) further cross-source verification of the register-continuity at the textual level, or (b) secondary-source articulation of the cross-tradition lineage as one continuous register.
