On the Genealogy of Morality supplies the corpus's missing primary-text genealogy of nihilism — the unconditional will to truth is the ascetic ideal's core (not its opposite), and its self-overcoming yields honest atheism and the death of God

ID: gm-will-to-truth-self-overcoming-of-nihilism Title: On the Genealogy of Morality supplies the corpus's missing primary-text genealogy of nihilism — the unconditional will to truth is the ascetic ideal's core (not its opposite), and its self-overcoming yields honest atheism and the death of God Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical / interpretive Created: 2026-06-28 Updated: 2026-06-28 Sources: nietzsche-1887-genealogy-of-morality, heidegger-1961-nietzsche-ii, chouraqui-2014-ambiguity-and-absolute Wiki homes: nihilism, will-to-truth, ascetic-ideal, vollendung-der-metaphysik, friedrich-nietzsche

Claim

On the Genealogy of Morality III.23–28 gives the primary-text genealogy of nihilism that the corpus previously held only in Heidegger's and Chouraqui's secondary refractions. Four moves: (a) science is not the counter-ideal but "the ascetic ideal's… latest and most noble form" (III.23); (b) the unconditional will to truth is the ascetic ideal's core, resting on "the belief in a metaphysical value, a value in itself of truth" = truth = God = the divine (III.24); (c) this will to truth, bred by Christian morality, turns against the ideal's own founding equation, so "Christianity as morality must now perish… by an act of self-sublation [Selbstaufhebung]" (III.27), producing honest atheism, a "second innocence," and "the value of truth" as the coming problem; (d) the ascetic ideal won in the first place because it gave suffering a meaning — "humanity would rather will nothingness than not will" (III.28). GM III.27–28 is therefore the shared primary-text object over which the wiki's two live Heidegger claims divide: it is what Chouraqui/Klossowski read as Nietzsche's overcoming of metaphysics from within, and it is exactly what Heidegger reads as the Vollendung (completion) of nihilism rather than an exit — the primary-text battleground for the Vollendung-vs-Überwindung dispute (see claims#vollendung-vs-uberwindung-of-metaphysics and claims#heidegger-vs-chouraqui-on-nietzsche-leitfrage, both live; complements the Heidegger-only candidate claims#metaphysics-as-nihilism-heidegger-thesis). The nihilism HUB concept page (built 2026-06-28, this batch) is the cross-tradition home this genealogy seeds — supplying its Nietzschean register alongside the Heidegger and Chouraqui readings.

Evidence

  • nietzsche-1887-genealogy-of-morality — III.23–24 (extraction-note Pass 2c, raw 3232, 3244–48): "wherever it still manages to be… suffering, [science] is not the opposite of that ascetic ideal, but rather its latest and most noble form"; "what compels one to this unconditional will to truth, is the belief in the ascetic ideal itself… the belief in a metaphysical value, a value in itself of truth." Restated on will-to-truth and ascetic-ideal.
  • nietzsche-1887-genealogy-of-morality — III.27–28 (extraction-note Pass 2c, raw 3296, 3300–04): "in us the will to truth came to consciousness of itself as a problem… morality will perish… by an act of self-sublation"; "the ascetic ideal offered [the will] a meaning!… a will to nothingness… but it is and remains a will!"
  • heidegger-1961-nietzsche-ii — "Die Metaphysik ist als Metaphysik der eigentliche Nihilismus" (extraction-note, raw 2422): the Vollendung-of-nihilism position that reads GM III.27–28's self-overcoming as completion, not exit. Cf. wahrheit-als-gerechtigkeit (Heidegger's "truth as justice" gloss), which partly bridges the will-to-truth ↔ will-to-power registers.
  • chouraqui-2014-ambiguity-and-absolute — §"Contra Heidegger" (anchored on self-falsification): "It is inauthentic to view inauthenticity from an authentic point of view" — Nietzsche refuses rather than fails metaphysics, the "overcoming from within" reading GM III.27 grounds in the primary text.

Counterpressure / Limits

Register mismatch (most decision-relevant). The two live claims this leverages are framed around will to power completing/evading metaphysics; GM III.23–28 is about the will to truth. The step from the will to truth's self-overcoming to a will-to-power-framed Vollendung dispute is an interpretive bridge the corpus's ingested Heidegger sources do not themselves make — Heidegger's own GM-/death-of-God-routed nihilism reading ("Nietzsches Wort 'Gott ist tot'", Holzwege) is not ingested. GM III is thus direct primary-text leverage on the nihilism / death-of-God question, and only mediated leverage on the two will-to-power-framed claims. (wahrheit-als-gerechtigkeit partly closes this.)

Over-systematization of a Streitschrift. GM III.27's "self-sublation" is the gnomic, prophetic climax of a polemic, not a worked-out doctrine; the extraction note's own diagnostic concedes "GM does not answer; it names the gap… and points beyond itself." Reading GM III as the systematic "genealogy of nihilism" may impose more architecture than the Streitschrift delivers.

Heidegger cuts both ways — but the claim absorbs this. Heidegger would say the self-overcoming of nihilism is its completion (Nietzsche stays within metaphysics). This is not a refutation: the claim frames GM III.27–28 as the neutral battleground, not as adjudicating for Chouraqui — stated explicitly so a future reader does not mistake it for taking the Chouraqui side.

Payoff

Discharges, on the primary text, the evidence gap both live Heidegger/Chouraqui claims named: they had only secondary refractions of "Nietzsche on nihilism." GM III.27–28 now gives the wiki the shared object the Vollendung/Überwindung dispute actually divides over — visible from neither concept page alone — and anchors the nihilism HUB page (built 2026-06-28 — the corpus's strongest cross-tradition motif: GM III.28 + Heidegger II + Chouraqui = three traditions), where it supplies the Nietzschean register. It also pairs with claims#bge-philosopher-as-legislator-closes-will-to-truth-to-power (candidate): BGE §211's positive program ("will to truth is — will to power") and GM III's self-overcoming of the will to truth are the affirmative and genealogical faces of one will-to-truth thread.

Status History

  • 2026-06-28 — created at live (audit Phase 8, following the GM 1887 ingest). The 3-test gate passes: (1) multiply contestable (Heideggerian completion-reading; Leiter-style denial that GM III is a "genealogy of nihilism"; contesting science-as-the-ideal's-"core"); (2) anchored across GM III.23–24 + III.27–28 (primary, raw 3232–3304), Heidegger Nietzsche II (raw 2422), and Chouraqui 2014 (§"Contra Heidegger"); (3) Counterpressure records the will-to-truth-vs-will-to-power register mismatch, the Streitschrift over-systematization risk, and the cuts-both-ways absorption. Independent claim-promotion-reviewer review (2026-06-28) returned PROMOTE-to-live — genuine 3-source synthesis (Rules 17/18 clean) — conditions incorporated: Counterpressure written; homed on the four existing pages with nihilism in prose only; neighbor claims cross-linked. Confidence medium (cross-source leverage is interpretive); supported would HALT and is unwarranted while the Holzwege-routed Heidegger anchor is un-ingested.
  • 2026-06-28 — the nihilism HUB concept page was built later the same day (weave/synthesis pass, same PR); nihilism added as the claim's first Wiki home (superseding the prose-only reference recorded above), and the Claim/Payoff text updated to reflect the page's existence.
