Claim
Heidegger's 1964 essay "Das Ende der Philosophie und die Aufgabe des Denkens" (GA 14 pp. 67–90) contains a load-bearing self-correction: the Sein und Zeit identification of Aletheia with Wahrheit (truth as unconcealment) "strayed from a decisive insight." The 1964 essay says Aletheia is not Wahrheit at all — Aletheia is the Lichtung (clearing) that grants both truth and untruth, but it is not itself "truth." Most Heidegger commentary (and a substantial portion of primary-tradition reading) treats Wahrheit als Unverborgenheit as the Heideggerian doctrine; the 1964 essay says this identification was wrong. The corrective: every wiki use of "the Heideggerian doctrine of truth as unconcealment" must distinguish (a) what Heidegger said in SuZ and (b) the 1964 retraction.
Evidence
- heidegger-1964-end-of-philosophy — GA 14 p. 87 (the self-correction passage), with the footnote citing SuZ p. 219 as the strayed identification. GA 14 p. 88 develops the Lichtung-grants-both-truth-and-untruth thesis. Anchored in extraction-note Pass 2a.
- Cross-reference to Sein und Zeit §44 "Dasein, Erschlossenheit und Wahrheit" — the 1927 articulation that the 1964 essay retracts. Sein und Zeit is not currently in
raw/as a standalone source page; the cross-reference depends on the 1964 essay's own citation. - Cross-reference to other 1960s Heidegger texts: Zeit und Sein (1962, in GA 14 pp. 3–30), Identität und Differenz (1957). The 1964 essay is in dialogue with these.
Counterpressure / Limits
- The retraction is Heidegger's own self-redescription. Whether the 1927 identification was actually a stray (vs. a partial articulation that the 1964 essay refines) is not settled by Heidegger's own assertion. A more conservative reading would treat the 1964 essay as a deepening of the 1927 articulation rather than a retraction of it.
- The wiki-wide implication is non-trivial. Adopting the 1964 self-correction as authoritative would require revisiting ontological-difference, unthought, seinsgeschichte, and martin-heidegger — none of which currently track the 1964 self-correction. The corrective claim is therefore load-bearing if accepted: it changes what the wiki says Heidegger's truth-doctrine is.
- The Aletheia-as-Lichtung thesis is itself partly developed in On Time and Being and in the unconsulted Bestimmung der Sache des Denkens manuscript (GA 80, marginal cross-reference in the 1964 essay). The 1964 essay's positive thesis is therefore not fully closed within the published text.
Payoff
If accepted, the claim has wiki-wide consequences: the Heideggerian doctrine of truth-as-unconcealment must be qualified as the SuZ version retracted in 1964; the 1964 Lichtung-as-grant-of-truth-and-untruth becomes the late Heidegger's settled position. This re-grounds ontological-difference (which now must be read as itself dependent on a prior origin — the Aletheia-Lichtung) and seinsgeschichte (which now treats destinal-sending as the manner in which the origin gives the difference). For the wiki's MP material, the 1964 self-correction is significant because MP's late ontology engages Heidegger's pre-1964 articulation of Unverborgenheit; whether MP's late notes anticipate the 1964 self-correction is a live question.
