In CPP ch. 4 §V–VI MP rejects causal models linking psychology and sociology in both directions: psychology does not cause sociology (as the Freudians' sociological psychoanalysis would have it — "Freudians argue that the psychological structure is the cause of civilization," raw 164; attribution corrected 2026-07-27 from "classical Comte-style methodological individualism": Comte occurs in CPP only at ch. 2 §VIII as codifier of the experimental sociological method, and "methodological individualism" nowhere in the raw) and sociology does not cause psychology (as Lévi-Strauss's structural-objectivism would have it). This is not a dogmatic anti-causality stance but a methodological opening — the rejection of inter-level causation is what allows MP to articulate reciprocal envelopment and "the unconscious is not a second consciousness, but a nonthematized lived experience." The claim is structural: this rejection is what allows MP's late ontology of Stiftung (1954–55) and institution. If sociology caused psychology, social institutions would be the explanans of individual experience; if psychology caused sociology, individual experience would be the foundational explanans. Counterpressure / Limits

  • Reciprocal envelopment is itself a kind of generalized causation. A skeptic could argue MP isn't rejecting causation but replacing it with a more sophisticated bidirectional-mutual-constitution model. If so, the "no-causality" framing is misleading: MP rejects linear / unidirectional causation but accepts something causal-like. MP says it himself: "although the causal problem cannot be entirely eliminated, we can at least pose it differently by introducing the notion of motivation" (raw 4646; added 2026-07-27) — an author-attested limit, not merely a skeptic's move.
  • The genealogical claim is structural, not textual. MP doesn't say in CPP ch. 4 "this is what allows my future Stiftung doctrine." The claim reads forward from 1949–52 to 1954–55 retrospectively. The reading depends on holding that Stiftung requires the no-causation structural opening.
  • Other phenomenologists (Husserl's late Crisis; Heidegger's Being and Time) also reject inter-level causation. MP's specific contribution is mediated through Husserl's regional ontologies + culturalism (CPP ch. 6) rather than being uniquely his. The claim should not over-attribute the move to MP alone.
  • C3 supported-jury refuter objection (evidence-chain lens, consolidation 2026-07-27 run 5, wf_a0b34b6a-bc5): Evidence-chain refutation. Three of the four substantive Evidence anchors fail passage-level verification in local context (General Rule 18); the supported gate's Test 2 is not met. 1. Evidence bullet 1's named anchors do not resolve. The bullet cited "extraction-note Pass 2a item 6 + Pass 2b 'no-causality-between-psy-and-soc.'" In the CPP extraction note, Pass 2a Chapter 4 item 6 (l. 99) is "Decentration as relative, not absolute" — Piaget vs. gestalt on decentration, ch. 4 §IV, nothing to do with psychology↔sociology causation. The §V–VI content actually sits at items 10–11 (ll. 107, 109). And no Pass 2b entry named "no-causality-between-psy-and-soc" exists anywhere in wiki/sources/ (grep: only the Pass 3 Part D registration at l. 613, the Signs dedup note, and CHUNK-B Candidate 3 at l. 341). Pass 2b's nearest entries are "Reciprocal envelopment of psychology and sociology" (l. 238) and "Unconscious as nonthematized lived experience" (l. 239) — both anti-reduction headings, not anti-causation headings. 2. Evidence bullet 3 cited a passage that locally does the opposite work. The raw text presents the causality-eliminating route as the Lewin/constructa temptation and then rejects it — "In renouncing realistic or substantialist thought, one succeeds in eliminating the problem" … "However, the problem is not eliminated, but changes form" (raw 4640–4642), and explicitly: "although the causal problem cannot be entirely eliminated, we can at least pose it differently by introducing the notion of motivation" (4646). MP's positive doctrine is mediated causal action, not its absence: "the individual undergoes the force of economics through the mediation of the cultural world" (4650). The cited passage therefore anchors a re-posing of causality, not a rejection of it. 3. Evidence bullet 4 carried no location and no verifiable content. merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity was cited with no chapter/page/extraction anchor, only the assertion that "Stiftung presupposes that institution can be both psychic and social without one causing the other." Grep of the I&P extraction note for caus|psychic and social|psychology and sociology finds no such passage; the one causality-bearing line (261, [215 verso]–216) says the Lebenswelt is "without exogenous causality and with endogenous causality that is never pure activity of Sinngebung" — again causality retained under a distinction the claim's framing does not make. Since this is the only non-CPP source, the 1954–55 half of a genealogical claim (the "precondition for Stiftung" leg) was unanchored, and the entry is effectively single-source on CPP once Evidence bullets 2 and 5 are recognized as cross-claim pointers rather than independent anchors. 4. The one anchor that does verify (ch. 4 §V–VI) supports a weaker thesis than the Claim field states, and its local context contains counter-evidence the Counterpressure treated only hypothetically. Raw 3247–3366 show MP rejecting reduction, not causation: "these correlations have value provided that one does not attempt to reduce one term to another" (3255); "We argue for a reciprocal envelopment and not a rivalry" (3303); §VI.D(1) "We must not reduce it to a particular case of causal thought that attaches little causes to large effects" (3355). In the same sections MP affirmatively retains causal vocabulary: "the circuits of causality are extensive" (3317), "the grain must be the cause" (3273), and "the explanation is at once social and psychological" (3365). A hypothetical-register counterpressure does not discharge a textual defeater. 5. The Claim field's specification of the two rejected directions was unattested. "Comte-style methodological individualism" — Comte occurs once in the CPP body (raw 1829, ch. 2 §VIII.C, index p. 120), where Comte and Mill are named as codifiers of an inductive natural-scientific method that exiles the observer, not as methodological individualists, and it is a different chapter from the cited §V–VI. The target MP actually rejects in that direction at §V is Freud's sociological psychoanalysis reducing social facts to "phenomena of a desexualized libido" (raw 3249); in the §VI.A Mauss material the anti-individualist point is about substitution/reduction ("This substitution is only possible if the society is reduced to a phenomenon of individual consciousnesses," raw 3285), again not causation. 6. Provenance note bearing on the promotion. The source extraction note's own adjudication recommends this slug at candidate, not live (Pass 3 Part D, l. 649), and CHUNK-B Candidate 3 (l. 341) marks it "Confidence: candidate" and states it "warrants extraction-note cross-check with Institution and Passivity and with Adventures of the Dialectic." That cross-check is what Evidence bullet 4 still lacked; the Status History's own stated bar for supported (sustained Crisis/Heidegger engagement) is likewise unperformed and unrecorded since 2026-05-05. Promotion to supported is blocked: bullets 1, 3, and 4 must be re-anchored and the Claim field's "no causality in both directions" + Comte attribution squared with raw 3273/3317/3355/3365 and 4646/4650 before the confidence rating can survive restatement.

The claim locates the enabling "structural opening" for the 1954–55 institution-ontology in CPP ch. 4 §V–VI (1950–51). But the wiki's own corpus attests the identical commitment seven-plus years earlier, in The Structure of Behavior: (i) .extraction-merleau-ponty-1942-structure-of-behavior.md item 52 (Ch IV §Truth of Naturalism, raw 1874–1890) — "There is no causal action of soul on body or body on soul," the apparent reciprocal action "reducible to an alternation or a substitution of dialectics," explicitly Against "both psycho-physical parallelism and any causal interactionism"; (ii) item 53 (raw 1932–1936) — the relativized-integration schema that already includes "the body as dialectic of social subject and his group," each degree "soul with respect to the preceding one, body with respect to the following one," i.e. a non-causal psychic/social relation stated in 1942; (iii) item 58 (Ch IV §Conclusion, raw 2026–2046) — "But beyond a causal thinking which can be all too easily challenged, there is a truth of sociologism," which is precisely the bidirectional refusal the claim credits to CPP ch. 4; plus the standing circular causality doctrine (Ch I §Stimulus, raw 422) and the three-orders thesis, whose Against is stated as "MP rejects linear causality as such." On this rival, CPP ch. 4 §V–VI is an application of a standing 1942 commitment to one human-sciences dispute, not the methodological opening that first "allows" Stiftung. The rival explains every cited passage as well as the claim does, and additionally explains why the CPP formulation is so compressed. The entry owes an answer to: if the no-causation opening was available from 1942, what makes the 1949–52 statement rather than the 1942 one the precondition, and why was Stiftung twelve years late? The one causal-vocabulary passage the I&P extraction note does record cuts against the "no-causality" framing rather than for it: Passivity Intro [215 verso]–216, extraction-note l. 261 — "without exogenous causality and with endogenous causality that is never pure activity of Sinngebung." The 1954–55 material therefore does not require the elimination of causality but its relocation (exogenous out, endogenous retained). Taken together: two live rivals — earlier-MP chronology (SB 1942) dissolving the direction of the claimed enabling relation, and MP's own constitution/institution contrast supplying a different and textually stated precondition.
