PPH (1947–48) is the direct conceptual predecessor of the 1954–55 *Institution dans l'histoire personnelle et publique* course
ID: pph-as-direct-predecessor-of-institution-1955 Title: PPH (1947–48) is the direct conceptual predecessor of the 1954–55 Institution dans l'histoire personnelle et publique course Status: supported Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical / structural-parallel Created: 2026-05-04 Updated: 2026-05-05 Sources: merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-ii-1947-1949, merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity, mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics Wiki homes: individu-de-classe, institution, reprise, pente-de-l-histoire
Claim
The PPH course (1947–48) — with its central concept individu de classe (PPH p. 184–192), its formulation "Gestalten qui orientent le développement historique sans le nécessiter," and its anti-fatum / anti-pure-objectivism articulation of logique de l'histoire — is the direct conceptual predecessor of the 1954–55 Institution dans l'histoire personnelle et publique course. The 1955 Institution course's formulation "Nouveauté de cette conception [l'institution], donc, à l'égard d'une philosophie de l'histoire fondée sur conscience (Hegel)" (cited by Dalissier) is the retrospective MP judgment on his own PPH project: institution as a Stiftung corrects what PPH could only formulate as individu de classe + logique de fait. The 1947–48 PPH formulation is the marxist-register predecessor of the Husserlianized 1954–55 institution.
Evidence
- merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-ii-1947-1949 — PPH pp. 184, 186, 188, 192.
- Dalissier's editorial introduction (Inédits II) traces the retrospective continuity: PPH 1947–48 anticipates both the 1954 Matériaux pour une théorie de l'histoire course (renamed via Lukács and Weber) and the 1955 Institution dans l'histoire personnelle et publique course.
Counterpressure / Limits
The structural identity is real but not absolute: institution is broader (extending to art history, science, biology, animal behavior) where the individu de classe is narrower (focused on the political-economic). The Mexico III conferences (March 1949) are the structural pivot — but the actual terminological shift from individu de classe to institution may not occur until 1953 (the Sensible World and the World of Expression course) or even 1954–55 (the Institution course itself). The 1949 NY Pensée politique still uses the marxist register; the 1953 SWE course already uses the Husserlian Stiftung register; the 1954–55 Institution course is the systematic articulation. The intermediate years 1950–53 are the philological gap that this claim cannot bridge from PPH alone.
Payoff
If accepted, the claim establishes that MP's signature 1954–55 concept of institution is not a Husserl-derived ontological innovation but a renamed and generalized marxist-register concept that MP first worked out in 1947–48. The wiki gains a direct genealogical link between the political-philosophical work of 1946–49 and the late ontology of 1959–61, via institution as the structural mediator. Two specific consequences:
- The Stiftung tradition is partially post hoc rationalized: institution is not primarily a Husserlian inheritance but a marxist-register concept that MP later integrates with Husserl's Stiftung.
- The 1954–55 Institution course is read as a continuation of the political work of AD 1955 rather than as a separate ontological project.
Status History
- 2026-05-04 — created as candidate, anchored in Inédits II PPH pp. 184–192 and Dalissier's editorial commentary.
- 2026-05-04 (Phase 8 run, later same day) — promoted to
live. The 3-test gate passes: (1) the genealogical claim that PPH 1947–48 is the direct conceptual predecessor of the 1954–55 institution course is contestable against the standard Husserlian-Stiftung-only genealogy of institution; (2) Inédits II extraction note anchors PPH pp. 184, 186, 188, 192 (the individu de classe concept and "Gestalten qui orientent le développement historique sans le nécessiter" formulation) and Dalissier's editorial commentary tracing the retrospective continuity; I&P Course Summary p. 114 anchors the 1954–55 institution articulation as a hinge between self/other and self/self; (3) Counterpressure documents the structural-vs-absolute distinction (institution is broader than individu de classe), the 1950–53 terminological gap (when does individu de classe become institution?), and Dalissier's editorial framing as partly motivated by the Mimésis edition's raison d'être. Confidence staysmediumbecause the Stiftung-tradition genealogy is partially testable (the 1953 Sensible World and the World of Expression course already uses the Husserlian register) but the actual terminological-shift documentation is not in currentraw/. Coordinate with claims#pente-de-l-histoire-as-proto-institution (live) — both promotions stand on the recovered 1946–47 / 1947–48 political-philosophical archive. - 2026-05-05 (Phase 8 ninth run) — promoted to
supportedunder R8 user pre-authorization, after the mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics ingest. The 5-test gate passes: criteria 1–3 cleared atlive; criterion 4 (payoff beyond "these pages are related") is now substantially strengthened — Mendoza-Canales 2026 supplies four-chapter convergence (Pagan §3, Mendoza-Canales §2, Larison §2.1, Caraus §2) on the I&P 1953–55 institution course as the architectural-load-bearing concept, and Pagan's explicit forward-link from I&P 58–62 to V&I 94–95 (per claims#institution-as-middle-term-1953-55 live, this run) closes the genealogical chain from PPH 1947–48 → Materials for a Theory of History 1953–54 → I&P 1954–55 → V&I 1959–61; criterion 5 (confidence survives restatement against strongest counter-position) holds because the standard Husserlian-Stiftung-only genealogy is now defeated on both sides of the bridge — PPH 1947–48 supplies the marxist-register predecessor (Inédits II), and Mendoza-Canales documents the multi-chapter convergence that institution-1953-55 cannot be reduced to Husserlian Stiftung (per claims#institution-as-paradigm-shift-from-stiftung-to-instituting-subject live, this run). Confidence staysmediumrather thanhighbecause the 1950–53 terminological-shift documentation (when does individu de classe become institution?) is still not anchored inraw/; the bridge is now sustained from above (1953–55) and below (1947–48) but not from within (1950–53).
