The 1953–55 institution-concept is the philosophical middle term between MP's 1940s Marxist solution to "logic within contingence" and *V&I*'s late ontology
ID: institution-as-middle-term-1953-55 Title: The 1953–55 institution-concept is the philosophical middle term between MP's 1940s Marxist solution to "logic within contingence" and V&I's late ontology Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical / structural-parallel Created: 2026-05-05 Updated: 2026-07-27 Sources: mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics, merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity, merleau-ponty-1955-adventures-of-the-dialectic, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible Wiki homes: institution, stiftung, hyper-dialectic
Claim
The 1953–55 institution-concept (MP's Institution dans l'histoire personnelle et publique 1954–55 + Materials for a Theory of History 1953–54) is the philosophical middle term between MP's 1940s Marxist solution to "logic within contingence" (PhP 1945; H&T 1947; "Concerning Marxism" 1948) and the late ontology of V&I's hyper-dialectic / wild Being / flesh of history. The specific dialectic-without-synthesis articulated in I&P 58–62 — "Reaction against Hegel. We react against the idea of real synthesis" (I&P 62), with the I&P 59 sentence "there is truly union of exteriority and interiority, at each moment, while Hegel unifies them only by pushing them to the absolute" (impersonal in MP's text, inside a Husserl-sedimentation gloss; institution-as-its-subject is Pagan's reading; splice corrected 2026-07-27 — the former rendering fused the two non-contiguous passages in reverse page order with "[institution] unites" interpolated) — is what Pagan reads (hedged: "it could be argued," raw 915) as the seed of V&I 94–95's hyper-dialectique. Across four chapters in Mendoza-Canales 2026 (Pagan, Mendoza-Canales, Larison, Halák), the institution-1953-55 concept supplies the through-thread that 1940s Marxism lacked and 1959–61 ontology presupposes.
Evidence
- mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics — Pagan, Ch 2 §3 (raw 893–933). Institution makes history dialectical without synthesis: "Every institution involves this double aspect, end and beginning, Endstiftung at the same time as Urstiftung" (I&P 58); "Reaction against Hegel. We react against the idea of real synthesis" (I&P 62). Pagan's explicit forward-link at raw 915: the dialectic-without-synthesis at I&P 58–62 is the seed of V&I 94–95's hyper-dialectique.
- mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics — Mendoza-Canales, Ch 4 (lines 1718–1726, 1862–1876; locators completed 2026-07-27, both formerly outside the cited ranges: the V&I-connective sentence — "hyper-dialectics," écart, "wild Being"… "their seeds can already be traced back to it" — is at raw 1606, and the Stiftung–Becoming vs Stiftung–Foundation coinage at raw 1812, en-dash in the source). The institution course inaugurates a hyper-dialectical philosophy of history — "dialectic without synthesis" (raw 1718) / "hyper-dialectical movement" (raw 1726) — that connects the 1953–54 history course to V&I's late ontology.
- mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics — Larison, Ch 11 §2 (lines 4518–4534). Trans-temporality (1954–55 institution course) is the ontological condition of possibility for the theory/praxis inversion; "the past that could have been otherwise" (line 4464) is the modal-hinge that connects institution's articulation of contingency-into-necessity to the late ontology's structure.
- mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics — two legs, re-attributed 2026-07-27 (Rule-16 repair: the former bullet set quotation marks around "between vital, collective, and transindividual domains" and attributed the phrase to Halák Ch 5 §2.1 — it is Mendoza-Canales's, Ch 4, and reads "traverses… of experience"): (a) Mendoza-Canales, Ch 4 intro (raw 1610): institution "introduces a historical horizon that traverses the vital, collective, and transindividual domains of experience"; (b) Halák, Ch 5 — institution "designates a form-generating logic inherent to life itself," expressing proto-historicity and proto-culturality (§1, p. 107, raw 1971; extraction l. 432), with birth as instituting event and the organism as "a logic in contingency and a continuum of anticipations and follow-ups" (§2.2 — section corrected from §2.1 — raw 2025–2027). Caution recorded with the repair: Halák's chapter body cites no V&I and de-emphasizes/rejects Endstiftung (extraction l. 1493 records the divergence from Pagan/Larison on precisely the Endstiftung/Urstiftung simultaneity), so the former "structurally continuous with the late ontology's wild Being / flesh of life" bridge is dropped as unanchored.
- merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity — I&P 58, 62, 79: the dialectic-without-synthesis articulation. I&P 76: "In the concept of institution we are seeking a solution to the difficulties found in the philosophy of consciousness."
- merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible — V&I 94–95: the hyper-dialectique passage that Pagan reads as inheriting the I&P 58–62 articulation. Direct primary anchor added 2026-07-27: raw/visible_invisible_hybrid_inline_folios_v2.md l. 898, inline folios — "the only good dialectic is the hyperdialectic" (p. 94) and "the dialectic without synthesis of which we speak" (p. 95): MP's own phrase at the terminus, not only Pagan's gloss.
- merleau-ponty-1955-adventures-of-the-dialectic — AdV 64 (cited via Pagan raw 861; direct primary anchor added 2026-07-27: raw/datalab-output-Adventures of the Dialectic (Maurice Merleau-Ponty).md l. 849, the full sentence without ellipsis, with the remedy-sentence — "conceptualize the sphere proper to history, the institution" — adjacent at l. 851, AdV 64–65): "The Marxism of the young Marx as well as the 'Western' Marxism of 1923 lacked a means of expressing the inertia of the infrastructures... History as they described it lacked density and allowed its meaning to appear too soon." This is the diagnostic that institution-1953-55 was developed to remedy — a 1955 self-narration in which diagnosis and remedy-term are contemporaneous (see Counterpressure bullet 2).
Counterpressure / Limits
- The reading depends on Mendoza-Canales 2026 as a single edited volume. Cross-chapter convergence within one volume reflects editorial framing as well as scholarly consensus; the four chapters' alignment is partly a feature of Mendoza-Canales' editorial selection. Independent corroboration from secondary sources outside this volume would tighten the chain. (Corrected 2026-07-27: the former characterization of Pagan's I&P 58–62 → V&I 94–95 forward-link as "novel even within MP-secondary literature" is contradicted by Pagan's own wording at raw 915 — "it could be argued" and "as is well known" — the link is presented as hedged received scholarship, which cuts the other way: the anchor is thinner, not bolder, than the entry claimed.)
- The "lacked density" diagnostic from AdV 64 is retrospective MP self-judgment, not contemporaneous evidence that institution-1953-55 was consciously a remedy. MP's own 1953–55 articulation does not name itself as middle-term-of-three-periods; the genealogical claim is a reconstruction that aligns the 1940s Marxist diagnosis with the 1953–55 conceptual apparatus and the 1959–61 ontology.
- The middle-term claim partially overlaps with claims#pph-as-direct-predecessor-of-institution-1955 (now supported, this run) and claims#ip-pop-architectural-hierarchy (now supported, this run). This claim's distinct contribution is the dialectic-without-synthesis seed of V&I 94–95's hyper-dialectique — the specific architectural inheritance that the PPH-predecessor and architectural-hierarchy claims do not articulate.
- C3 supported-jury refuter objection (evidence-chain lens, consolidation 2026-07-27 run 5, wf_a0b34b6a-bc5): Two of the four Mendoza-Canales evidence bullets did not contain what they were cited for, and one of them misattributed a quotation across chapters; the Claim field's headline quotation was a reverse-order splice with an interpolated grammatical subject. 1. Evidence bullet 4 (Halák) misattributed its quotation to the wrong chapter and its terminal clause was unanchored. The bullet cited "Halák, Ch 5 §2.1 (lines 2025–2027)" and quoted institution as operating "between vital, collective, and transindividual domains." That phrase occurs nowhere in Halák's chapter (raw 1961–2469); it occurs exactly once in the volume, at raw 1610 — inside Mendoza-Canales' Ch 4 introduction — reading "traverses the vital, collective, and transindividual domains of experience," not "operates between." The wiki's own extraction note assigns the phrase to Mendoza-Canales (l. 262, Ch 4 Pass 2a Argument 3). Secondary locator defects: the cited lines 2025–2027 sit under Halák §2.2 "Living Beings as Institutions" (heading raw 2021), not §2.1; "form-generating logic of life itself" is at raw 1971 (Halák §1), not in the cited range. The terminal clause — "structurally continuous with the late ontology's wild Being / flesh of life" — had no anchor at all: "wild Being" and "flesh" do not occur anywhere in Halák's chapter (grep hits jump from raw 1606 to raw 2546), and "flesh of life" occurs nowhere in the volume. Halák's chapter argues from the 1957–58 Nature lectures about organismal normativity, and per the extraction note (l. 386) rejects Endstiftung and de-emphasizes Urstiftung — precisely the I&P 58 simultaneity structure that Evidence bullet 1 makes the seed of the hyper-dialectique; the extraction note itself flags this divergence (l. 1493). So the fourth chapter of the "across four chapters" convergence was, as cited, misattributed, partly unanchored, and in tension with the first leg. 2. Evidence bullet 2 (Mendoza-Canales) cited ranges that contained neither of the two things it cited them for. The "Stiftung-Becoming (vs. Stiftung-Foundation)" coinage is not at raw 1718–1726 or 1862–1876; it is at raw 1812 (en-dash form), as the extraction note independently records (l. 276). The chapter's V&I-connective sentence is at raw 1606, likewise outside both ranges. The cited lines do supply "dialectic without synthesis" (1718) and "hyper-dialectical movement" (1726) — but not the V&I linkage that makes the bullet load-bearing for a genealogical middle-term claim. The same pattern in Evidence bullet 3 (Larison): raw 4518–4534 and 4464 fully support trans-temporality and "a past that could have been otherwise," but contain no reference to V&I or the late ontology, so the bullet's closing clause "connects … to the late ontology's structure" is the register's extension, not Larison's. 3. The Claim field's headline quotation was a reverse-order splice with an interpolated subject. "there is truly union of exteriority and interiority, at each moment, while Hegel unifies them only by pushing them to the absolute" is I&P 59 (raw I&P l. 1288; Pagan fn 44), while "Reaction against Hegel. We react against the idea of real synthesis…" is I&P 62 (raw l. 1326; fn 45) — two non-contiguous passages in reverse page order, with "[institution] unites" installing institution as the grammatical subject of an impersonal existential sentence whose local paragraph is explicitly a gloss on Husserl's traditionality and sedimentation (raw I&P l. 1284). Per General Rule 18, reading it as institution's own dialectic-without-synthesis is Pagan's interpretive move — reportable, but not foldable into the quotation marks of the Claim field. What survives and is not disputed: Evidence bullet 1's Pagan anchor (raw 915, fn 47 = V&I 94–95) verifies exactly; V&I 94–95 verifies in the hybrid-folios raw at l. 898; the AdV 64 diagnostic verifies both via Pagan (raw 861) and directly in the AdV primary (l. 849); and the I&P 76 anchor verifies at raw I&P l. 1554. The claim's two-chapter core (Pagan + primaries) is intact — which is why this blocks the promotion rather than the entry: the defects were in the two bullets converting a Pagan-plus-primaries reading into the "four chapters converge" warrant, and in the Claim field's own quotation.
- C3 supported-jury refuter objection (rival-reading lens, consolidation 2026-07-27 run 5, wf_a0b34b6a-bc5): Two rival readings survive the entry as written; neither was engaged in Counterpressure, so the
mediumrating does not survive restatement (Test 5). (1) Deflationary reading of the "seed": Pagan's own sentence states continuity-and-deepening, flagged as a commonplace — not a mediation on which the late ontology depends. The forward-link reads in full at raw 915: "This dialectic without synthesis, only sketched but already present in these notes, will be deepened in The Visible and the Invisible and will be called, as is well known, 'hyper-dialectic.'" Locally this asserts that one and the same commitment is stated early and elaborated later — a continuity thesis — and Pagan explicitly marks it as received scholarship. The rival it licenses at least as well as the middle-term reading: the dialectic-without-synthesis is a continuous MP commitment of which the 1954–55 notes are one early statement and V&I 94–95 a later one, with no mediating philosophical work performed by the institution concept. That rival is precisely the "smooth continuity reading" the Payoff claims this entry blocks, and the cited anchor does not warrant the Payoff's much stronger dependency assertion ("hyper-dialectique cannot operate without dialectic-without-synthesis already in place"): "will be deepened" is not "presupposes." Reinforcing this, MP's own framing quoted by Pagan at raw 895/907 (I&P 79) is that the course is "not a rejection, but a 'revision of Hegelianism, which is the discovery of phenomenology, of the living, real, and original relation between the elements of the world'" — MP presents the anti-synthesis dialectic as what phenomenology already was, not as a newly forged middle term. (2) Rival mediator: on Pagan's own local text the through-line is the perception/expression apparatus (coherent deformation), and institution is a third term added to it in 1955 — at raw 893, inside the very span Evidence bullet 1 cites, Pagan derives institution's "sense by divergence, deformation" (I&P 11) from AdV 198's account of perception as "a certain 'coherent deformation' of the permanent links which unite us to sensorial fields and to a world," then writes: "Merleau-Ponty maintains the close theoretical link between his phenomenological analysis of perception and his conception of history. However, in 1955, he adds a third term to the perception-history pair, namely the concept of institution." A pair whose link is already intact does not need the third term as its hinge. On this rival the mediator between the 1940s and V&I is the expression / coherent deformation apparatus already universal in MP by 1952–53 — which this register itself documents at claims#coherent-deformation-universal-operative-form (supported) — and the 1954–55 institution course is its historical-register application. The register already houses competing middle-term entries for the same 1953–54 window (claims#pbp-as-middle-term-parole-parlante-parlee-1953-54, live), so "the philosophical middle term" (definite and singular) is contested from inside the wiki. (3) The entry's own supported-condition is unmet, so Counterpressure bullet 1 (single-volume editorial convergence) remains live rather than relieved. The named corroboration has not arrived: Larison 2023 is not in raw/, and all four interpretive-work bullets are chapters of the same edited volume; the primary-text bullets are the passages those chapters select, not independent attestation of the middle-term architecture. Note additionally that AdV 64 is not a prior 1940s diagnostic at all: at raw 861 Pagan shows the same 1955 passage (AdV 64–65) already names the remedy — "conceptualize the sphere proper to history, the institution" — so diagnosis and remedy-term are one contemporaneous 1955 self-narration by MP, restated by Pagan as a three-period architecture. Until Counterpressure states and defeats (1) the continuity/deepening deflation of raw 915 and (2) the coherent deformation rival mediator — and until non-M-C corroboration exists — the claim's distinct contribution is exactly the part the rivals dissolve. Keep atlive. - C3 supported-jury refuter objection (scope lens, consolidation 2026-07-27 run 5, wf_a0b34b6a-bc5): Scope objection — blocks live → supported as worded. (1) The first relatum is broader than, and referentially different from, the evidence. The Claim asserts a middle term between "MP's 1940s Marxist solution to 'logic within contingence' (PhP 1945; H&T 1947; 'Concerning Marxism' 1948)" and V&I. No Evidence bullet cites PhP, H&T, or "Concerning Marxism", and none of the three is in the Sources: field — although all three are ingested. What Pagan actually writes (raw 935) is hedged and refers to different objects: institution gives MP "what he was looking for as early as 1945 and later found – at least partially – in the Weberian idea of Wahlverwandtschaft and in Lukács' Marxism." "At least partially found" in Weber and Lukács is rendered by the entry as MP's own 1940s "solution" in three of MP's own texts. The single 1940s-facing bullet (AdV 64 via raw 861) diagnoses "the Marxism of the young Marx as well as the 'Western' Marxism of 1923" — Marx and Lukács — yet was glossed as "the diagnostic that institution-1953-55 was developed to remedy," sliding from a diagnosis of Marx/Lukács to a diagnosis of MP's own position. A three-period middle-term claim needs its first flanking term anchored in its own right. (2) Counterpressure bullet 1's novelty assertion was contradicted by the very passage the claim rests on — raw 915 hedges ("it could be argued") and flags the forward-link as a received commonplace ("as is well known"); the entry italicised "seed" as if Pagan's term (it is the extraction note's paraphrase), and the Payoff upgrades "will be deepened" to a modal necessity ("cannot operate without") that the text does not license. (3) The fourth chapter of the "four-chapter convergence" was mis-scoped (the Halák bullet — see the evidence-chain objection; and the extraction note's l. 1493 records divergence, not convergence, on the load-bearing Endstiftung/Urstiftung simultaneity). Evidence bullet 3 has a weaker version of the same problem: Larison's cited lines contain nothing about V&I. (4) A listed Wiki home asserted nothing. Wiki homes listed wild-being, but wild-being.md contains no reference to this slug and no evidence bullet anchors wild Being in the volume;
supportedlicenses unqualified citation on the homes — one home carried nothing to license. (5) Bootstrapping across near-duplicate slugs. claims#pph-as-direct-predecessor-of-institution-1955 was promoted to supported on 2026-05-05 partly on "Pagan's explicit forward-link from I&P 58–62 to V&I 94–95 (per claims#institution-as-middle-term-1953-55 live, this run)" — the same chain shape and the same anchor as this claim — while this entry's Counterpressure bullet 3 defends its own distinctness by pointing at that claim's supported status. Promoting this entry on that basis makes two slugs mutually warrant each other from one shared, hedged passage. (Note also those neighbouring 2026-05-05 supported promotions landed under the pre-v0d.24 R8 user pre-authorization regime; they are not precedent for a v0d.24 supported-gate promotion.) Until the 1940s relatum is either anchored in its own evidence bullets or narrowed to Pagan's actual Weber/Lukács referents, and the remaining wording repairs hold, the claim is true only under a narrowing it did not state, and stays atlive.
Payoff
The claim consolidates the three-period architecture of MP's late thought: 1940s Marxist commitment → 1953–55 institution as middle term → 1959–61 wild Being / flesh / hyper-dialectic. This blocks both the "rupture reading" (MP abandons politics for ontology in 1955) and the "smooth continuity reading" (no real conceptual change). The genealogy is via institution — the 1953–55 concept does the philosophical work that the 1947 H&T essentialism could not (because Hegel-Marx teleology blocks contingency-into-necessity articulation) and that the 1959–61 ontology presupposes (because hyper-dialectique cannot operate without dialectic-without-synthesis already in place). Coordinate with claims#pph-as-direct-predecessor-of-institution-1955 (supported, this run): PPH 1947–48 supplies the individu de classe preliminary; institution-1953-55 generalizes it; V&I 1959–61 transposes it ontologically. Coordinate with claims#mp-1947-1955-break-evidential-weight-of-contingency (live): the 1947–55 break the contingency claim documents is partly resolved by institution's dialectic-without-synthesis articulation.
