Faul belongs in the institutional camp alongside Kaushik, not an ethical/existential camp; Paper A's distinguishing move from Faul is *cryptic* institution

ID: faul-institutional-camp Title: Faul belongs in the institutional camp alongside Kaushik, not an ethical/existential camp; Paper A's distinguishing move from Faul is cryptic institution Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: corrective Created: 2026-04-27 Updated: 2026-05-05 Sources: faul-2024-ontologically-interactive-painting, kaushik-2019-matrixed-ontology, kaushik-2021-negation-implex Wiki homes: institution, stiftung, science-secrete, caleb-faul, interactive-ontology

Claim

Faul's "Ontologically Interactive Painting" (JBSP 55:2, 2024) places Faul in the institutional camp of MP secondary literature (alongside Kaushik), not in an ethical/existential camp as some readings assume. Paper A's distinguishing move from Faul is therefore cryptic institution (see claims#cryptic-institution-extends-beith) — a fourth mode of institution rather than a different family of concept. The corrective is necessary because miscategorizing Faul as ethical/existential would obscure where Paper A's contribution actually sits.

Evidence

  • faul-2024-ontologically-interactive-painting — §2 / Part 1 (pp. 187–192) is entirely organized around MP's institution concept, drawing on the Course Summary in In Praise of Philosophy and the 1954–55 Institution and Passivity lectures (Faul cites Inst. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 41, 77, 77–78). The argumentative spine is institution; no ethical-existential register is in evidence. Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a arguments 2–4 (line 16–24).
  • faul-2024-ontologically-interactive-painting — §3 / Part 2 (pp. 192–195) applies the institution-logic to the painter-world relation (the paraphrase-extension of E&M 139 at p. 192), not to an ethical-existential register. The case study is Susan Rothenberg's Three Heads read through institution-logic. Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a arguments 6–8 (lines 28–36).
  • faul-2024-ontologically-interactive-painting — §4 / Part 3 (pp. 195–197) derives the metaphysical upshot (interactive-ontology) directly from the institution-logic of §2 and the Three Heads application of §3. The metaphysical synthesis is institutional-ontological, not ethical-existential. Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a argument 9 (line 38).
  • kaushik-2019-matrixed-ontology + kaushik-2021-negation-implex — institutional-camp comparison anchor. Per claims#kaushik-stiftung-literary-frame (live), Kaushik's institution is symbolic-matrix / literary-language; Faul's institution is painter-world / interactive. The two are coordinate within the institutional camp, with internal differentiation: Kaushik privileges the pre-pivot 1953 literary-language register; Faul privileges the 1961 Eye and Mind painter-world register. Both are institutional readings of MP; neither is ethical/existential.
  • (2026-05-05 cite-back update under γ split.) The cross-reference to claims#science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (now contested, 2026-05-05) in earlier Faul-side discussions referred to "the wiki's reading of science secrète as the joint operation of Stiftung and chiasm." Under γ, that reading is replaced by claims#mp-painter-as-primary-witness-for-indirect-ontology (live, 2026-05-05): painting in particular gives indirect ontology its primary witness, without claiming a four-element-synthesis-as-architecture. The institutional-camp classification of Faul is unchanged by the γ split — Faul's reading is institutional whether the wiki organizes the late ontology under H_synth's four-element framing or under δ's three-tier expressive cluster + the successor slug's painter-as-primary-witness specificity.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Faul's institution is narrower than Kaushik's and than the wiki's broader treatment. Faul writes only "institution" in English; he does not engage Stiftung, the hinge / charnière, the symbolic-matrix, the Bergson retrospective identification (per institution §"Institution Already in Bergson"), or the political-Marxist register (per institution §"The Marx-facing Development"). The classification claim is therefore that Faul is institutional, not that Faul exhausts the institutional reading. The internal differentiation among institutional-camp commentators (Kaushik / Faul / Beith / Saint Aubert) is significant and must not be flattened.
  • The 2024 Faul paper is the wiki's first ingest of Faul; no other Faul publications are on the wiki. The classification claim is robust if Faul's other publications (which the wiki has not seen) are also institutional; if some Faul publications engage an ethical-existential register, the classification would need qualification ("Faul's Ontologically Interactive Painting is institutional" rather than "Faul is institutional").
  • The fabricated Faul citation incident ("The Painter's Courage," JBSP 55:2, 2024) was generated during paper drafting and removed; the corresponding real paper is "Ontologically Interactive Painting" (the same volume number; per General Rule 16 and AUDIT_PLAN Phase 6 spot-check). This is a load-bearing provenance note: any classification statement about Faul must use the real citation only. The 2026-04-28 ingest establishes the real artifact-anchor; the fabrication-incident is preserved here for traceability.
  • The Paper A distinguishing-move (cryptic vs. interactive) depends on a separate specification. This claim asserts Faul's institutional classification; it does not by itself establish Paper A's cryptic-mode distinction from Faul. That distinction is the work of claims#cryptic-institution-extends-beith (still candidate post-Faul-ingest) and requires Paper A's specifying-statement of what cryptic adds beyond interactive.
  • (2026-05-09 supported-promotion HOLD recorded.) Evaluated against the 5-test gate at 2026-05-09 per user pre-authorization for δ-affected supported-HALT discharge. Test 4 (payoff beyond aggregation) does not pass at supported-grade: the classification-corrective payoff is real but scope-bound to a single Faul publication (Ontologically Interactive Painting, JBSP 55:2, 2024) — the wiki has ingested no second Faul source, and the Status History 2026-04-28 entry already specified that "the single-publication scope of the wiki's Faul coverage and the not-yet-engaged ethical/existential rival reading both bind criterion 4 of the supported gate." γ-decision propagation does not address the single-publication-scope problem; that binding is unchanged in 2026-05-09. The classification holds at live with confidence medium. Promotion to supported requires either (a) a second Faul publication ingest that confirms institutional-camp framing across his corpus, or (b) sustained engagement with a candidate ethical/existential reading of Faul demonstrating the institutional classification survives that counter-position. See wiki/.audit/synthetic-layer-2026-05-09-deferred-supported-promotions.md for the full reviewer record.

Payoff

The classification corrects a possible misreading that would otherwise place Paper A in the wrong intellectual neighborhood (ethical/existential rather than institutional). Within the institutional neighborhood, Paper A's distinguishing move (cryptic vs. interactive) becomes legible as a fourth-mode extension rather than a different-family contribution. The corrective also makes visible the internal differentiation among institutional-camp commentators: Kaushik privileges the pre-pivot literary-language register; Faul privileges the painter-world register; Paper A's cryptic mode would specify what these two readings together leave under-handled (the silent / withdrawn / non-thematic register where the painter's science secrète operates).

Status History

  • 2026-04-27 — created as candidate. Evidence gap = Faul ingest. Promotion to live requires the Faul source page + extraction note + comparison statement.
  • 2026-04-28 — promoted to live following the Faul ingest. The 3-test gate now passes: (1) the institutional-camp classification is contestable against possible ethical/existential readings; (2) Faul §2 / §3 / §4 anchor each evidence bullet, with the Kaushik 2019/2021 extraction notes supplying the institutional-camp comparison; (3) Counterpressure documents the narrower-than-Kaushik scope of Faul's institution, the single-publication scope of the wiki's Faul coverage, the fabrication-incident provenance, and the Paper A specifying-statement that this claim does not establish on its own. Confidence promoted from low to medium given the verified passage-level argumentative anchoring; not supported because the single-publication scope of the wiki's Faul coverage and the not-yet-engaged ethical/existential rival reading both bind criterion 4 of the supported gate.
  • 2026-05-05 — H_synth cross-reference updated to track γ split (per Agent A's thesis-coherence memo + AUDIT_PLAN.md v1.5 user adjudication). The cross-reference to claims#science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm (now contested, 2026-05-05) is now framed under the γ split: the painter-side specificity that survives is preserved under claims#mp-painter-as-primary-witness-for-indirect-ontology (live, 2026-05-05). The institutional-camp classification itself is unchanged by γ; Faul's institutional reading of MP is independent of the four-element-architecture decision. No status change; confidence remains medium.
