Claim

MP's Sorbonne ch. 5 §VII formulation — "between the psychic and collective, or social, life there is a mediation, a milieu: culture" (line 4080) — together with the causalité de réseau (network-causality) formulation immediately following (line 4084), constitutes MP's substantive mid-century methodological contribution to the disciplines of psychology and sociology. Generalizes Mead/Kardiner/Linton culturalism but mediated through Marx (mediation by tools) and Hegel (institutional spirit). MP's 1949–52 contribution is that culture is neither cause nor effect of psychic and social life but the milieu through which they reciprocally compose each other — a doctrine that lint terminology should distinguish from American culturalism's behaviorist legacy and from structuralist objectivism (Lévi-Strauss). The causalité de réseau formulation positively names what Lewin's "social psychology" left unnamed (CPP ch. 6 §III.C.2, line 4650): culture as the missing middle term in the psycho-social fabric.

Evidence

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The "concrete mediation" terminology of Inkpin 2026 names the category but is not MP's term. MP's vocabulary is culture / milieu / causalité de réseau; Inkpin's concrete mediation is a contemporary categorical reconstruction. The wiki's culturalism-mp page and concrete-mediation page (Inkpin 2026) should be cross-linked but not conflated. The Sorbonne extraction note explicitly registers this as a false-friend caution.
  • Mead/Kardiner/Linton culturalism MP draws from has its own counter-pressures. American culturalism in the 1940s-50s is partly behaviorist in its empirical apparatus, even when MP gives it a phenomenological reading. The doctrine MP constructs is therefore not identical with the American culturalism MP names; culture-as-mediating-milieu is MP's reformulation, not MP's transmission.
  • The genealogy back to Marx and Hegel is asserted but not extensively developed in CPP itself. MP gestures at Marx's "mediation by tools" and Hegel's "objective spirit" but the Sorbonne lectures do not work them out at length.

Payoff

The claim:

  • Gives MP's 1949–52 Sorbonne lectures a substantive contribution to mid-century social theory that is independent of late-MP's institution-period universalization, and not collapsible to "applied phenomenology."
  • Anchors the culturalism-mp concept page (created 2026-05-04 at the Sorbonne ingest) with a thesis-central function rather than merely a documentary one.
  • Connects institution to culturalism-mp backwards through the 1949–52 Sorbonne: MP's 1954–55 institution-vocabulary is built on a methodological substrate that is already in place at the Sorbonne in the form of culture-as-milieu / causalité de réseau.
  • Provides a wiki-side anchor distinct from concrete-mediation (Inkpin 2026) for the role of culture in MP's social-theoretical apparatus, with the Inkpin/MP false-friend caution preserving each in its own register.

Status History

  • 2026-05-05 — created at live (Phase 8 seventh run) after the merleau-ponty-2010-child-psychology-pedagogy ingest. The 3-test gate is met: claim contestable (the false-friend-with-Inkpin and the not-identical-with-American-culturalism counterpressures are articulated), each evidence bullet anchored (lines 4080, 4084, 4650), counterpressure recorded (three concerns preserved). Promotion at live rather than candidate because the cardinal formulation (line 4080) is verbatim and unambiguous; the causalité de réseau formulation immediately following gives the same doctrine a methodological name. Promotion to supported would require sustained cross-source comparison with Lévi-Strauss's structuralism, with American culturalism's mid-century literature, and with Marx's mediation-by-tools and Hegel's objective-spirit doctrines — substantial engagement deferred to a future audit.
