Claim

Counterpressure / Limits

MP's vocabulary is culture / milieu / causalité de réseau; Inkpin's concrete mediation is a contemporary categorical reconstruction. The wiki's culturalism-mp page and concrete-mediation page (Inkpin 2026) should be cross-linked but not conflated. The Sorbonne extraction note explicitly registers this as a false-friend caution.
  • Mead/Kardiner/Linton culturalism MP draws from has its own counter-pressures. American culturalism in the 1940s-50s is partly behaviorist in its empirical apparatus, even when MP gives it a phenomenological reading. The doctrine MP constructs is therefore not identical with the American culturalism MP names; culture-as-mediating-milieu is MP's reformulation, not MP's transmission.
  • The genealogy back to Marx and Hegel is asserted but not extensively developed in CPP itself. MP gestures at Marx's "mediation by tools" and Hegel's "objective spirit" but the Sorbonne lectures do not work them out at length.

The Marx attribution appears to have been imported from culturalism-mp Details ("Bridges to Marx's mediation-by-tools-and-institutions (CPP ch. 6 §III.C.2, line 4650)") and Connections ("applies Marx's mediation-by-tools"), i.e. from a wiki home whose own cited anchor does not mention Marx. (b) Hegel: at raw 4080 Hegel appears only as "solipsism … corresponding to a certain kind of relation with nature (private property)" — not "institutional spirit"; and the actual "objective spirit" passage (raw line 1531, ch. 2) has MP attributing that derivation to American culturalism itself ("In the American culturalist movement … it derives from the Hegelian notion of 'objective spirit'"). So the Hegelian grounding is not MP's differentiating addition on top of Mead/Kardiner/Linton, which is exactly the structure the Claim field and Counterpressure bullet 2 ("MP's reformulation, not MP's transmission") require. Neither raw 1531 nor raw 1238 is cited in Evidence. 2. Evidence bullet 3 mischaracterizes its passage's local work (General Rule 18). The bullet reads raw 4650 as "the negative anchor (a concrete case where the absence of culture-as-mediating-milieu is diagnosed)" in "Lewin's social psychology." In local context (raw 4642–4652) MP is answering his own question of how an economic dialectic becomes a motivational pattern — the milieu is introduced positively, borrowed from the American culturalists, to explain how economics reaches the individual; MP's charge against Lewin at 4652 is narrower (constructa are "only an important first step"; motivations are missing). The explicit "what becomes of social psychology in this conception?" deficiency charge at raw 4668 is aimed at Koffka's isomorphism/epiphenomenalism, not Lewin. Evidence bullet 4 is circular and supplies no independent anchor. It cites claims#no-causality-between-psych-and-soc-as-stiftung-precondition; that entry's Evidence bullet 2 cites this claim in return. Both rest on the same single source, so the "cross-source" bullet leaves the entry single-sourced on [[merleau-ponty-2010-child-psychology-pedagogy]] for every element of the thesis. 5. The entry's own recorded supported-prerequisite is undischarged. Its Status History (2026-05-05) states that promotion to supported "would require sustained cross-source comparison with Lévi-Strauss's structuralism, with American culturalism's mid-century literature, and with Marx's mediation-by-tools and Hegel's objective-spirit doctrines — substantial engagement deferred to a future audit." On the local reading MP is not announcing a new methodological doctrine but supplying concreteness ("the shape of houses," chairs and body technique at line 4068/4084) to a mediation thesis he explicitly assigns to Marx and Hegel. Counterpressure bullet 3 registers the Marx/Hegel gesture only as an under-developed genealogy; it does not notice that MP's sentence is a priority disclaimer, which is what the rival needs. (2) MP credits the culturalists with exploring the very milieu the claim says he reformulates beyond them. At the ch. 6 anchor: "We must determine a medium, a milieu (like that being explored by the American culturalists) of tools, of instruments, and of institutions that shape my manner of thinking" (line 4650). And the Hegelian grounding the claim assigns to MP's supplement is assigned by MP to the culturalists: "In the American culturalist movement, the social factor is not a collective consciousness... Rather, it derives from the Hegelian notion of 'objective spirit'" (line 1531, ch. 2 §VII). Counterpressure bullet 2 asserts the contrary — "culture-as-mediating-milieu is MP's reformulation, not MP's transmission" — without engaging either passage. The rival ("MP transmits and philosophically articulates a culturalist doctrine he presents as already Hegelian-grounded and already exploring the milieu; his addition is the concrete 'how' and the pedagogical dissolution of a disciplinary either/or") is therefore live and undefeated, and it directly contradicts the claim's headline register: "constitutes MP's substantive mid-century methodological contribution to the disciplines of psychology and sociology." (3) The local argumentative function of §VII.A is narrower than the claim's characterization. The section is titled "The Importance of Parental Relations" and the passage answers a specific in-discipline question posed two paragraphs earlier — "Must we choose between the psychoanalytic or sociological interpretation?" (line 4076), with the culturalists' own non-isolability point stated at line 4074 ("these factors cannot be isolated"). Read in context, culture-as-milieu is deployed to dissolve a false either/or about family conflict in a lecture course on child psychology; the elevation to "MP's substantive methodological contribution to mid-century social theory" (Payoff bullet 1) is a wiki-side evaluative upgrade the passage does not carry. (4) "Neither cause nor effect" overshoots a text that keeps causality. The claim states culture is "neither cause nor effect of psychic and social life," and pairs the entry with claims#no-causality-between-psych-and-soc-as-stiftung-precondition as its "negative content." But MP writes: "But we must stop thinking in terms of causality. Or again we must admit that we are dealing with a webbed causality [causalité de réseau] and not a linear causality" (line 4086) — the "or again" glosses the first sentence by the second, i.e. linear causality is replaced by networked causality, not abolished. Cf. The deflationary rival — MP pluralizes and reciprocalizes causation and substitutes motivation (a 1945 Phénoménologie concept, which the ch. 6 passage names as the operative replacement and the claim does not mention) for third-person causality — fits these sentences better than the transcendental "milieu that is neither cause nor effect," and it also weakens the "1949–52 contribution" dating. (5) Ancillary anchor slip bearing on the rival's grip. The claim says the causalité de réseau formulation follows the cardinal formulation "immediately" at line 4084; in raw it occurs only at line 4086 (grep: sole corpus attestation), two paragraphs later and after the intervening psychoanalysis-of-society material. (5) Near-duplicate coexistence papered over. claims#no-causality-between-psych-and-soc-as-stiftung-precondition (live) shares this entry's source, two of its three anchors (ch. 5 §VII; ch. 6 §III.C.2) and two Wiki homes (institution, culturalism-mp); both entries describe themselves as the "positive"/"negative" halves of one doctrine (this entry's Evidence bullet 4; the sibling's Evidence bullet 2 and Payoff bullet 3). But that sibling's Counterpressure bullet 1 states the division may be spurious — "MP isn't rejecting causation but replacing it ... MP rejects linear/unidirectional causation but accepts something causal-like" — which is what raw 4086 shows in a single sentence pair.
