MP's *chair* departs from Husserlian rigor in three load-bearing ways (Derrida's three-charge structure)
ID: mp-chair-departs-husserl Title: MP's chair departs from Husserlian rigor in three load-bearing ways (Derrida's three-charge structure) Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: philological Created: 2026-05-27 Updated: 2026-06-01 Sources: derrida-2000-on-touching-nancy, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible, merleau-ponty-1964-signs, carbone-2015-flesh-of-images Wiki homes: flesh-as-element, chiasm, reversibility, mondialisation-of-flesh, haptocentrism, jacques-derrida
Claim
Merleau-Ponty's late ontology of "flesh of the world" — as developed across "The Philosopher and His Shadow" (in Signs, 1959), Phenomenology of Perception, and The Visible and the Invisible — departs from Husserlian rigor in three specific, load-bearing, philologically traceable ways: (1) infidelity to Husserl's Doppelempfindung analysis: MP symmetrizes the touching-touched chiasm with the seeing-visible chiasm, against Husserl's explicit asymmetry in Ideas II §36–37 (Husserl: the eye is not seen by the eye in the way the hand is touched by the hand; Leiblichkeit is constituted by self-affection through touch, not sight); (2) misreading of "without introjection": in Ideas II p. 175 Husserl says the other has access to his own body "without introjection"; MP takes this as describing my access to the other's hand "without introjection," collapsing the irreducible distinction; (3) mondialisation of flesh (mondialisation-of-flesh): MP's V&I 57n10 extends chair "as far as the stars" via Bergson, over-extending Leiblichkeit to inert non-self-affecting bodies; for Husserl, Leiblichkeit requires self-affection, hence stones cannot be Leib. These three departures are philologically traceable to specific MP passages and Husserl passages, and they are independent of the Christian-semantic charge (which is a separate, fourth diagnostic). The claim does not refute MP's ontology — it documents the cost of the move.
Evidence
- derrida-2000-on-touching-nancy §9 (the central polemic): MP's "The Philosopher and His Shadow" (Signs 1959) is read close to Husserl Ideas II. The three charges are developed at pp. 200–213.
- derrida-2000-on-touching-nancy §8 — Husserl Ideas II §36–37 close reading: Husserl's Doppelempfindung is restricted to manual touch; "In the case of an Object constituted purely visually we have nothing comparable" (Husserl Ideas II 155).
- derrida-2000-on-touching-nancy p. 201 — the "without introjection" misreading: "Husserl would never have subscribed to this 'It is in no different fashion' ('It is in no different fashion that the other's body becomes animate before me when I shake another man's hand or just look at him'), which assimilates the touching-the-touching of my own proper body or my two hands with the contact of the other's hand."
- derrida-2000-on-touching-nancy p. 247 — explicit naming of mondialisation of flesh: "beyond the virtually Christian connotations of the word 'flesh,' one also . . . runs the risk of a sort of 'globalization' [mondialisation] of flesh, bestowing a flesh upon 'things,' 'essences,' and modes of experience that are fleshless (without Leib) by essence."
- MP *Signs* "The Philosopher and His Shadow" pp. 166–175 — MP's reading of Husserl Ideas II and the "as I touch my left hand while it is touching my right" formula extending to vision.
- MP V&I p. 57n10 — the citation of Bergson extending flesh "as far as the stars." GR18 raw check discharged 2026-06-01: verified verbatim in the V&I raw (
raw/visible_invisible_hybrid_inline_folios_v2.mdline 819, note 10): "As Bergson said in Les Deux Sources: my body extends unto the stars" (editor's note citing Les Deux Sources p. 277: "it includes everything that we perceive, it extends unto the stars"). The MP-side anchor of the third charge (mondialisation of flesh) is therefore traceable to raw, not only to Derrida's secondary report. - carbone-2015-flesh-of-images Ch 1 pp. 7–20 — the existing secondary-source attestation of Derrida's three-charge critique; this primary-source ingest anchors it philologically.
Counterpressure / Limits
- The Carbone-via-Husserl 1934 "Umsturz" counter: carbone-2015-flesh-of-images argues that MP's extension of flesh to stones is more faithful to Husserl than Derrida claims — Husserl's 1934 "Umsturz" manuscript itself entertains "stones flying" and "two earths" as thought-experiments. If Husserl himself opened what MP extends, the charge of "departure" weakens for stones-and-stars but not for the manual-touch / vision symmetry.
- The MP-écart counter: MP's late writings — especially the V&I working notes and the écart register — explicitly resist fusion / coincidence. The écart and non-coincidence moments may be partial recognitions of what Derrida names; whether MP fully recognizes or partially recognizes them is the open philological question.
- The "as" of analogy versus "as if" of metaphor: MP's as in "as I touch my left hand while it is touching my right" may be read as philosophically literal (Derrida's reading: collapsing structural distinctions) or rhetorically metaphorical (a defensive reading: MP is offering an analogy, not a thesis). The two readings yield different verdicts.
- The cumulative-charge problem: the three departures are independently traceable but together yield a critical mass. A defender of MP could grant one or two of the three but resist the cumulative reading. The wiki's claim must hold the three as individually load-bearing, not as a synthetic verdict.
- MP's later work: Derrida focuses on Signs (1959), PoP, and V&I. MP's Nature lectures (1956–60), the Husserl at the Limits materials, and the late ontology may resist the three charges more strongly than the Signs essay alone.
Payoff
- For the wiki's reading of flesh-as-element: provides the philological-philosophical infrastructure for the Derrida-side critique now recorded in the Positions section. The Carbone-via-Gauguin counter-argument and the Derridean three-charge structure are now both philologically anchored.
- For the wiki's reading of chiasm and reversibility: MP's chiasm is re-readable as the symmetrized form of Husserl's asymmetric Doppelempfindung. The wiki's existing pages on the chiasm should record this Derridean re-reading.
- For the jacques-derrida entity page: the three-charge structure (previously anchored only via Carbone 2015) is now anchored at primary-source level.
- For haptocentrism: the philological departure is the modern form of the haptocentric tradition's privileging of self-touch.
- For the wiki's reading of mondialisation-of-flesh: this claim provides the third charge in philological form.
- For the wiki's reading of Husserl: the wiki's reading of Leiblichkeit in Ideas II §36–37 is re-grounded — Husserl's restriction of Doppelempfindung to manual touch is the positive anchor against which MP's chiasm and mondialisation are diagnosed.
Status History
- 2026-05-27 — created at candidate at Derrida 2000 On Touching ingest. Three-test gate: (T1) contestable — yes, the Carbone-via-Husserl-1934 counter and the MP-écart counter are non-trivial. (T2) anchored in Derrida 2000 §§7-9 close readings; MP Signs / V&I primary passages cited; Husserl Ideas II §36–37 close reading at §8. (T3) five counterpressure bullets recorded. Held at candidate; promotion to live deferred until (a) primary-source ingest of Husserl Ideas II, (b) re-reading of MP's Husserl at the Limits / Nature lectures with the three-charge structure in view, or (c) cross-claim audit with claims#mp-flesh-not-husserl-leib (supported) and claims#mp-takes-husserl-further-than-husserl-intended (live) to determine whether the three-charge structure subsumes, complements, or competes with these existing claims. Phase 8 audit candidate.
- 2026-06-01 — promoted candidate→live (audit Phase 8, 17th run; user pre-authorization). Deferral condition (c) — the cross-claim audit — completed by an independent
claim-promotion-reviewer: the three-charge structure COMPLEMENTS both neighbours and competes with neither. vs. claims#mp-flesh-not-husserl-leib (supported): different axis — the supported claim is negative-lexical (MP's chair is not a rendering of Husserl's Leib; Saint-Aubert's corpus statistic), this claim is conceptual-departure (where MP does engage Husserl thematically he departs in three ways); the two carry opposite valences (Saint-Aubert pro-MP independent genealogy; Derrida adversarial over-reach) on the same relation — complementary, not contradictory. vs. claims#mp-takes-husserl-further-than-husserl-intended (live): same deep structure ("MP exceeds Husserl"), different Husserl text (Ur-Arche/Umsturz vs. Ideas II §36–37), opposite valence — siblings, not rivals. No subsumption, no lint-18 duplication (Wiki homes overlap only at flesh-as-element). The central charges (§8 restriction; §9 "without introjection" p. 201; p. 247 mondialisation) verify verbatim in the Derrida-2000 extraction note; the V&I 57n10 anchor was the one Rule-18 flag and is now discharged (verified in raw — see Evidence). Held belowsupportedpending a primary-source Husserl Ideas II ingest.
