The MP/Nancy *écart* divergence — encroachment-and-spanned vs. unpassable-limit-as-void
ID: morin-ecart-as-encroachment-vs-unpassable-limit Title: The MP/Nancy écart divergence — encroachment-and-spanned vs. unpassable-limit-as-void Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: structural-parallel / philological / corrective Created: 2026-05-22 Updated: 2026-05-23 Sources: morin-2022-mp-nancy-sense-being, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible Wiki homes: ecart, chiasm, empietement, flesh-as-element, jean-luc-nancy
Claim
Merleau-Ponty's écart and Nancy's écart are conceptually different in kind despite shared vocabulary. For MP, écart is encroachment + promiscuity + depth-as-relief ("the universal structure of world," VI 234), with the hiatus "spanned by the total being of my body, and by that of the world" (VI 148; "the zero of pressure between two solids that makes them adhere to one another"). For Nancy, écart is unpassable limit + ontological void without depth or thickness — "the interval, at once parted [écarté] and without depth or thickness" (Nancy, "Banks, Edges, Limits" 46); the between is "neither connected nor unconnected, but falls short of both" (BSP 5). Reading the two together corrects each: MP's tendency toward "peaceful confusion of related elements," Nancy's tendency toward "absolute extrusion" (Carbone, Chiasmi International 4 [2002]: 57). The contrast is one of priority / emphasis, but it has structural consequences across the late MP / mature Nancy comparison.
Evidence
- morin-2022-mp-nancy-sense-being Ch 8 §3 (pp. 188–93) — the central deployment; MP's "spanned by total being" at VI 148 read as the hinge of the contrast; Nancy's BSP 5 ("neither connected nor unconnected, but falls short of both") as the counter-pole.
- merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible VI 148: "this hiatus . . . is not an ontological void, a non-being: it is spanned by the total being of my body, and by that of the world."
- merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible VI 234: encroachment as "the universal structure of world"; VI 218, 248, 250–51, 262 for the wider empiètement / promiscuity cluster.
- Nancy "Banks, Edges, Limits" (Angelaki 9.2, 2004): "the interval, at once parted [écarté] and without depth or thickness, which spaces the plurality of singulars; it is their mutual exteriority and the circulation between them" (46).
- Nancy BSP 5: "This 'between' . . . does not lead from one to the other; it constitutes no connective tissue, no cement, no bridge . . . The 'between' is . . . the interlacing [l'entrecroisement] of strands whose extremities remain separate even at the very center of the knot."
- Nancy C 11: "Nothing gets through, which is why it touches."
- Carbone, "Flesh: Towards the History of a Misunderstanding" (Chiasmi International 4, 2002): 57: the adjudicating formula — "It would be as bad to think of a reversibility without écart, that is available to be realized as peaceful confusion of the related elements, as it would be to think of écart as a fracture, which, instead of opening together the different — and divergent — possibilities of those elements, would set their absolute distinction and therefore their reciprocal extrusion."
- Saint Aubert EC 380 (cited by Morin p. 192): worry on behalf of Nancy — MP's "logic of promiscuity has the tendency to evacuate, in the end, the fundamental existential virtue of space that is separation."
- Watkin Phenomenology or Deconstruction? 147: symmetrical worry on behalf of MP — Nancy's "'flattened' understanding of the relation between world and sense."
Counterpressure / Limits
- The wiki's existing reading of VI 148 (per ecart §38, chiasm Key Points) treats the "spanned hiatus" positively — as binding-not-separating, the écart as productive structure of non-coincidence. This reading is well-anchored (Toadvine, Morris, Hass) and is incompatible with Morin's diagnostic reading of the same passage as MP retreating from écart-as-principle. The 2-test gate is satisfied (anchored evidence, counterpressure documented), but Test 5 (rating-survives-restatement) would need to consider whether Morin's reading or the standard reading is right at the level of VI 148 — and the wiki currently leans toward the standard reading.
- Lawrence Hass ("Sense and Alterity") insists écart is sufficiently radical in MP to escape the encroachment-as-confusion charge; Hass elsewhere (MP's Philosophy ch 5) argues for abandoning the "hegemony of reversibility," which Morin would have to also engage.
- Morris's chiral reversibility reading (Morris in Chiasmi International 12 [2010]; Continental Philosophy Review 43 [2010]) — used by Morin in Ch 8 §2 — already locates the écart as constitutively positive in MP. Whether Morris's chiral reading and Morin's "spanned-by-flesh-as-grounding" diagnosis are compatible is not fully argued by Morin.
- The contrast may be a difference of emphasis (Morin's stated position at p. 192) rather than a substantive opposition; treating it as substantive risks forcing a choice between the two ontologies that Morin herself refuses.
Payoff
If accepted, the claim (i) clarifies the wiki's treatment of écart (currently MP-only or MP-centred) by adding Nancy as a counter-pole with structurally distinct ontology; (ii) lets readers track the MP-Nancy comparison precisely at the level of the écart-vocabulary rather than at the level of generic "post-phenomenology"; (iii) opens cross-source operational deployment of the Carbone adjudication formula as a constraint on reading both thinkers; (iv) authorises Morin's three subsidiary corrective theses (cautious anthropomorphism, in-itself-for-us, quelconque against Harman). Operational: enables future ingest of additional MP-Nancy work (Watkin, James, Carbone) to be situated cleanly.
Status History
- 2026-05-22 — created at candidate (Morin 2022 ingest, extraction-note Pass 3 Part D Claim 1). The strongest of three Morin candidate claims for textual anchoring. 3-test gate status: T1 contestable (the spanned-hiatus reading is the actively-defended counter-position); T2 anchored (VI 148; BSP 5; Carbone 57; Saint Aubert EC 380); T3 counterpressure documented (Toadvine/Morris/Hass standard reading; the Morris-chiral compatibility question). Phase 8 review will need to decide whether Morin's reading supports a contested status on ecart and chiasm or whether the wiki maintains the standard reading with a Positions section flagging the contestation.
- 2026-05-23 — promoted candidate → live (sixteenth Phase 8 run). 3-test gate satisfied: T1 the standard binding-not-separating reading (Toadvine, Morris, Hass) is actively defended and incompatible with Morin's diagnostic; T2 anchored at the specific MP/Nancy passages (VI 148, VI 234, BSP 5, Carbone Chiasmi International 4: 57, Saint Aubert EC 380); T3 four counterpressure registers (standard wiki reading, Hass radical-écart, Morris-chiral compatibility-unresolved, difference-of-emphasis-vs-substantive). Multi-source check satisfied (Morin + MP V&I + Nancy BSP cited + Carbone). The wiki's existing ecart page now requires a Positions section flagging the Morin contestation; this is a Step 8.5 / 8.9 carry-forward. Confidence remains medium — at the level of VI 148, the standard reading remains better-supported, but Morin's diagnostic structurally-organises the MP/Nancy comparison.
