MP retains a *desire for the One* that Nancy from the start refuses

ID: morin-mp-desire-for-one-thesis Title: MP retains a desire for the One that Nancy from the start refuses Status: candidate Confidence: speculative Claim type: interpretive / corrective Created: 2026-05-22 Updated: 2026-05-22 Sources: morin-2022-mp-nancy-sense-being, merleau-ponty-1945-phenomenology-of-perception, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible Wiki homes: flesh-as-element, ecart, chiasm, empietement, ineinander

Claim

Morin's master interpretive diagnosis: across MP's whole corpus — PoP communion (PP 221–2), the "presumptive unity within the horizon of experience" (PP 228), the late Ineinander and encroachment (VI 234), and the "spanning" of the écart by flesh (VI 148) — runs "if not a posited unity, at least a desire for the One that has completely disappeared from Nancy's ontology" (Morin p. 23; restated at p. 192: "there remains, in Merleau-Ponty's later work, a desire for some regime of indivision or confusion that is from the start foreign to Nancy's ontology"). The "desire for the One" is the structural-interpretive frame Morin uses to explain why MP cannot take the partes extra partes through to the Nancean radicalisation. It is not a claim MP makes about himself; it is Morin's diagnostic.

Evidence

  • morin-2022-mp-nancy-sense-being p. 23 (Intro §3) and p. 192 (Ch 8 §4 conclusion) — the master statements of the thesis.
  • PP 221–2 — communion as MP's name for body-world co-determination.
  • PP 228 — "a presumptive unity within the horizon of experience"; "the unity of the subject or of the object is not a real unity, but a presumptive unity."
  • VI 148 — the "spanned" hiatus.
  • VI 234 — encroachment as "the universal structure of world."
  • Saint Aubert EC 380 — "the 'logic of promiscuity' has the tendency to evacuate, in the end, the fundamental existential virtue of space that is separation" (the auxiliary anchor for the Morin-leaning side of the diagnosis).
  • MP's late working note (1960, cited at EC 129 n. 3): "Ne pas partir de mon corps" — late MP's partial move toward Nancy's territory, but Morin reads this as still not abandoning the desire-for-One (it dissolves the body-proper but retains the Ineinander as integrative).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The claim is interpretive and rests on cumulative pressure rather than a direct MP statement. No MP text says "I desire the One."
  • Sympathetic MP readers (Hass, Madison, Morris, Toadvine) would reject the diagnosis and read the same passages as positive affirmations of non-coincidence. The Morris-chiral reading (already in chiral-reversibility) and the Toadvine reading of écart as productive structure both go against the diagnosis.
  • Morin's MP is heavily Saint Aubert-mediated: the EC 380 "logic of promiscuity" worry is what gives the diagnosis textual purchase. Readers who reject Saint Aubert's psychoanalytic-Blondelian framework will not reach Morin's conclusion.
  • The thesis risks forcing a comparison-frame onto two thinkers whose lack of direct influence (Morin Intro §3 acknowledges this) makes a master-thesis diagnostic difficult to support.
  • Late MP's intercorporeity (the post-1953 Schilder reading; the 1960 working notes) explicitly tries to dissolve the body-proper into the system self/other (EC 129 n. 3, "Ne pas partir de mon corps"). Whether this dissolves the desire-for-One (Morin: no, it just relocates it to the Ineinander) or already takes MP to Nancy's territory (Toadvine, Morris) is open.

Payoff

If accepted, the claim functions as the interpretive frame that organises Morin's other two candidate claims (claims#morin-ecart-as-encroachment-vs-unpassable-limit, claims#morin-cautious-anthropomorphism-mp-1948-strategy) and explains why MP retains encroachment-as-spanning while Nancy refuses. It also provides a productive target for late-MP defenders to argue against — the contested status on ecart and chiasm can be framed via this thesis. Payoff for the wiki: a master diagnosis available for or against in future MP-Nancy work; the wiki gains a precise framing for the comparative-ontology debate that goes beyond shared-vocabulary similarity.

Status History

  • 2026-05-22 — created at candidate (Morin 2022 ingest, extraction-note Pass 3 Part D Claim 2). The most interpretively contestable of three Morin candidate claims — speculative confidence. 3-test gate status: T1 contestable (Hass / Madison / Morris read same passages positively; Late-MP readers contest the diagnosis); T2 anchored cumulatively (no single MP passage; Morin's own statements at p. 23 + p. 192; Saint Aubert EC 380); T3 counterpressure documented (Toadvine / Morris / Hass; Morris-chiral; the 1960 working notes' partial move toward Nancy). Phase 8 review with cross-source check — particularly with chouraqui-2014-ambiguity-and-absolute, madison-1981-phenomenology-merleau-ponty, and the Morris chirality literature.
