McWeeny's panpsychism reading of MP's reciprocal-flesh structure (with rejection bias from Barbaras + MP's own May 1960 working note)

ID: flesh-panpsychism-mcweeny-stress-test Title: McWeeny's panpsychism reading of MP's reciprocal-flesh structure (with rejection bias from Barbaras + MP's own May 1960 working note) Status: candidate Confidence: low Claim type: interpretive Created: 2026-05-09 Updated: 2026-07-21 Sources: alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible Wiki homes: chiasm, flesh-as-element

Claim

McWeeny (Contemporary Philosophy 2019, ch. 6) argues that MP's reciprocal-expression structure of flesh requires panpsychism — all flesh is self-sensing, including pebbles and shells. Reciprocal expression is incoherent without symmetrical sentience-sensibility; Einfühlung must obtain universally between self-other and self-thing alike. The wiki tracks this claim as a Position to dialectically engage rather than a thesis to endorse: MP's own May 1960 working note explicitly distinguishes sentient from merely sensible flesh, and Barbaras (same volume, ch. 1) reaches the opposite conclusion from the same chiasm-structure.

Evidence

  • alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy ch. 6 (McWeeny), pp. 133–153. Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a + Part D candidate #4.
  • merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible May 1960 working note: "The flesh of the world is not self-sensing (se sentir) as is my flesh — It is sensible and not sentient" (cited verbatim at V&I 250 / orig. 304).
  • Barbaras (same volume, ch. 1) — ontic/ontological/transcendental tripartition reaching opposite conclusion (per companion claim claims#flesh-three-senses-barbaras-tripartition).
  • Dillon's "trees do not see" objection (standard rejection in MP secondary literature).
  • Zahavi's rejection of shared experience cuts at the Einfühlung-as-universal premise.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • MP's own May 1960 working note explicitly distinguishes sentient from merely sensible flesh — direct textual contradiction.
  • Barbaras's tripartition reading reaches the opposite conclusion from the same chiasm-structure, demonstrating the panpsychist reading is not the only one available.
  • Dillon's standard objection blocks the universal-Einfühlung premise.
  • False-friend caution + recommended posture: the panpsychism reading is structurally legible but exegetically isolated — the wiki should not endorse the McWeeny reading; instead, draft the claim as a Position entry on chiasm or flesh-as-element in the dialectical-disagreement form ("McWeeny argues X / Barbaras argues Y / MP's May 1960 note suggests Z").
  • C2 refuter objection (rival-reading lens, consolidation 2026-07-21, wf_81b4545d-850): Rival reading (2026-07-21 consolidation refuter, rival-reading lens; blocks candidate->live): the entry's rejection-bias framing treats MP's May 1960 working note as a "direct textual contradiction" of McWeeny (this entry's May-1960 Evidence and Counterpressure bullets), but the wiki's own extraction note records that McWeeny's chapter explicitly engages that very passage and "argues it should be read against other passages" — notably the "Intertwining—The Chiasm" passage calling carnal being "a prototype of Being, of which our body, the sensible sentient, is a very remarkable variant," whose "constitutive paradox already lies in every visible" (wiki/sources/.extraction-alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy.md, Pass 2c, lines 79 and 81). Every anti-panpsychist lever the entry cites as free-standing rejection pressure — the May 1960 note, Dillon's "trees do not see," Zahavi on shared experience (this entry's Evidence and Counterpressure bullets) — appears in the extraction note only as an objection McWeeny's chapter already answers (Pass 2a argument #6 "Against" field, line 16), so the entry presents addressed objections as undefeated defeaters and states the "contested" restatement unfairly: one of the three positions is shorn of its recorded response to the strongest objection against it. The rival is corroborated by the wiki's own V&I artifacts: the same May 1960 note that says "sensible and not sentient" also says the flesh of my body "is shared by the world, the world reflects it, encroaches upon it and it encroaches upon the world" and calls world-flesh "a pregnancy of possibles, Weltmöglichkeit" (wiki/sources/.extraction-merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible.md:277-278), and that extraction's own diagnostic flags the sentient/sensible relation as a question MP "sidesteps... rather than answering" (line 428); the register itself concedes two entries away that V&I 250 is "May-1960 working-note territory, where MP is himself uncertain" admitting multiple disambiguations (claims#flesh-three-senses-barbaras-tripartition Counterpressure, artifact-conservatism bullet). The note cannot be non-decisive there and a flat contradiction here. Secondary rival: "Barbaras reaches the opposite conclusion from the same chiasm-structure" (this entry's Claim, Barbaras Evidence bullet, and Barbaras Counterpressure bullet) understates that Barbaras's tripartition presupposes the same diagnosis McWeeny makes — that MP's univocal flesh as written licenses the body-flesh-to-world-flesh slide (extraction Pass 2a argument #1, line 6: the direct move "illegitimately presupposes spatial continuity of body with world") — so Barbaras corroborates the pull McWeeny names and diverges only on remedy (split the concept vs. bite the bullet), weakening "opposite conclusion" as rejection pressure. Until the Claim/Counterpressure state McWeeny's counter-move on V&I 250 and re-weigh the rejection bias with the note's instability visible, the restatement does not survive; this also matches the entry's own 2026-05-09 recommendation to hold at candidate and route the content to Position entries on chiasm/flesh-as-element instead of promoting (this entry's 2026-05-09 Status History line; extraction Part D candidate #4, line 190).

Payoff

The claim documents a contested reading of MP's flesh-structure that the wiki must hold open without endorsing. It anchors the chiasm and flesh-as-element Positions sections with a Position the wiki rejects, demonstrating that the wiki's stance on flesh-structure is reasoned-against alternatives, not only positively articulated.

Status History

  • 2026-05-09 — created as candidate with rejection bias (Phase 8 thirteenth run, Layer 2 backfill harvest). Held at candidate per Layer 2 backfill recommendation: promotion to live would require either (i) endorsing McWeeny against MP's own working note (high bar; the wiki should not do this) or (ii) restating as a contested claim where the chapter is one position among others. Recommended next action: convert to a Position entry on chiasm or flesh-as-element in dialectical-disagreement form rather than promote.
