Barbaras's ontic/ontological/transcendental tripartition of MP's *chair* against MP's univocal use
ID: flesh-three-senses-barbaras-tripartition Title: Barbaras's ontic/ontological/transcendental tripartition of MP's chair against MP's univocal use Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: philological Created: 2026-05-09 Updated: 2026-05-09 Sources: alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible Wiki homes: flesh-as-element, chiasm
Claim
Barbaras (Contemporary Philosophy 2019, ch. 1) argues MP's chair is univocally deployed where it should be tripartitioned into ontic (corps propre, reversibility of touch), ontological (world as non-being totality, "originarity as being"), and transcendental (desire as essence of life). MP's direct move from ontic to ontological flesh illegitimately presupposes spatial continuity of body with world; the "flesh of the world" should be thought as flesh as world. The tripartition is a corrective philological proposal, not just a reading.
Evidence
- alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy ch. 1 (Barbaras), pp. 29–46. Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a + Part D candidate #1.
- Cited textual anchor: merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible V&I 250 (orig. 304): "The flesh of the world is not self-sensing (se sentir) as is my flesh — It is sensible and not sentient" — Barbaras's textual lever for the asymmetric reading.
- Cross-source bridge: Michel Henry's transcendental flesh (which Barbaras also rejects) — the philosophical foil.
Counterpressure / Limits
- The volume contains its own internal rebuttal: McWeeny (ch. 6) argues the same V&I 250 passage demands panpsychism, not tripartition — the Barbaras and McWeeny readings cannot both be correct.
- MP's univocal use may be philosophically apt rather than confused — the very challenge of V&I is to think the structures together rather than separating them.
- The wiki's existing supported claims#mp-flesh-not-husserl-leib and live claims#ontologie-de-la-chair-misnomer work in adjacent territory but track different distinctions; the Barbaras tripartition needs to be related to those rather than treated as a freestanding refinement.
- Artifact-conservatism: V&I 250 is in May-1960 working-note territory, where MP is himself uncertain — Barbaras's reading is one disambiguation, not the only available one.
Payoff
The claim gives flesh-as-element a sharply-stated Position from a major secondary source (Barbaras Dynamique line). Without it, the wiki's flesh-as-element page is read as if MP's univocal use were settled; with it, the philological pressure for tripartition is on the page. For Paper A and any future ingest of Barbaras's Dynamique de la Manifestation (Vrin 2013, not currently in raw/), this Position is the wiki-side anchor.

live(Phase 8 thirteenth run, Layer 2 backfill harvest under user pre-authorization). 3-test gate passes: contestable (McWeeny's panpsychism reading is the within-volume rival; MP's own univocal use is the textual rival); evidence anchored at ch. 1 + V&I 250; counterpressure with within-volume disagreement recorded.
