Claim

The MP-secondary-literature commonplace that MP's chair is the French translation of Husserl's Leib is philologically wrong. Per Saint Aubert's corpus survey: of over 500 occurrences of "chair" in MP's corpus, MP's lecture courses on Husserl contain only three mentions of chair — all of them inside the conventional locution en chair et en os (the standard French translation of Husserl's Leibhaftigkeit — in person, in the flesh). MP never translates Leib by chair. The two terms operate in different registers: Leib names the Husserlian lived body; chair names something MP's late ontology is independently constructing.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The philological claim depends on Saint Aubert's archive-and-corpus survey work. Saint Aubert 2004 Du lien des êtres (the systematic treatment) is not in raw/; the corpus statistic is anchored only via Saint Aubert's 2023 paper's reporting of his prior work. An independent corpus audit (counting chair occurrences in MP's published corpus + the unpublished archive Saint Aubert accessed) would be the primary check.
  • Three Husserl-course attestations of chair still exist (in en chair et en os). The claim is not that MP and Husserl are unrelated — the Leibhaftigkeit-translation register is real — but that MP's chair concept is not derived from translating Husserl's Leib. A reader could grant the philological observation while still maintaining a thematic Husserl-derivation thesis (MP's chair as conceptually responsive to Husserl's Leib even where the lexical translation is absent).
  • The philological observation does not by itself settle the genealogy. Saint Aubert's positive thesis — that MP's chair derives from Christian-theological carne (Augustine, Bonaventure), Sartre's La Nausée, the medical-physiological register, and the early-MP "structure" tradition — is a separate constructive proposal. The philological observation refutes the Husserl-translation reading; it does not establish what chair does derive from. That positive genealogy depends on Saint Aubert 2004 + 2006 + 2021, only one of which is in raw/.
  • Husserl-Steinbock readings of MP (e.g. Beith 2018) operate at a different level — they read MP's institution / passivity as Husserlian-genetic-phenomenology, not the chair lexicon directly. The philological claim about chair does not impugn those readings.
  • Calibration evidence-chain findings (jury calibration 2026-07-28; repairs applied 2026-08-18): the blinded run found the fn-9 bullet attributing an Être et chair II cross-reference the footnote does not contain, and the 2021-volume bullet anchorless and asserting a corpus-survey basis absent from the 2021 artifacts (both repaired — the 2021 corroboration is thematic: Leibhaftigkeit rewriting, title reversal, April 1960 anti-Husserl notes). Also recorded: the Claim's register-separation clause (Leib names the lived body; chair names an independent late-ontology construction) escalates beyond fn 8's local corpus-statistics context — it is Saint Aubert's larger thesis, carried by the 2021/2004 material, not by the footnote alone.

Payoff

The philological observation re-grounds the wiki's flesh-as-element and donation-en-chair pages. Chair is not a translation but an independent construction. The Husserl-derivation reading must give up the lexical-translation move and argue for a thematic relation only — a weaker and more contestable position. The wiki's existing material (which mostly treats chair via the Husserl-Leib-translation framing) becomes more philologically tight when this corpus statistic is on record. It also reinforces claims#science-secrete-stiftung-chiasm's framing of the late ontology as MP's own architectural composition: the chair lexicon is part of what MP is building, not part of what MP is translating.
