Claim

MP's anonymously signed N.D.L.R. in Temps Modernes N°36 (September 1948), in response to Trần Đức Thảo's recension of Kojève's Introduction à la lecture de Hegel, contains MP's earliest published use of "déhiscence" in connection with Hegel: "il faut en regarder en face l'énigme centrale, cette déhiscence qui ouvre à la nature et à l'histoire, mais qui a déjà son analogue à l'intérieur de la nature, et ne s'explique donc pas 'par en bas', mais pas davantage 'par en haut'." This is at least 16 years before the V&I-era articulations of déhiscence (1959–61 working notes) and significantly before any other documented MP-on-Hegel use of the term.

Evidence

  • merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-ii-1947-1949 — Dalissier editorial introduction p. 67 reproduces the September 1948 N.D.L.R. and confirms the signing-as-MP attribution (following Saint Aubert's prior philological work on TM editorial signatures).
  • TM N°36 (September 1948) — the original N.D.L.R. text on Trần Đức Thảo's recension.
  • V&I working notes (1959–61) — the late MP déhiscence references for comparison: e.g. November 1960 working note on déhiscence as fission of self-touching.
  • Saint Aubert E&C II — extensive treatment of déhiscence in MP's late notes; the Inédits II finding pushes Saint Aubert's earliest documented date 5 years earlier than MSME 1953.

Counterpressure / Limits

The N.D.L.R. is anonymously signed ("N.D.L.R." = Note de la Rédaction). Attribution to MP rests on:

  1. MP's role as gérant of Temps Modernes in 1948.
  2. Stylistic / vocabulary analysis (Saint Aubert's prior work).
  3. Internal evidence (the response engages topics MP works on elsewhere — ambiguïté, master/slave totalization, the Hegel-question).

But: anonymous signatures also sometimes mean Sartre or other TM editors. The attribution is probable but not certain. If the N.D.L.R. is by Sartre, the claim is false in the sense that MP's earliest published "déhiscence" remains later.

A second concern: the 1948 use is one occurrence — MP does not use déhiscence extensively until 1959–61. The prefiguration claim (the term anticipates the V&I doctrine) is therefore weaker than the attribution claim: MP may have used the term once in 1948 in a Hegel-context-specific way and only later have systematized it.

Payoff

If accepted, the claim establishes that MP's déhiscence vocabulary has a 16-year underground career before the V&I working notes. The genealogical implication: MP's late ontology of déhiscence / flesh / fission is not a 1959–61 sudden development but a slow elaboration that begins with a 1948 reading of Hegel's Phenomenology in the political-philosophical context. The wiki's chiasm page gains a 1948 anchor; the ambiguity-vs-ambivalence page gains the philological link from 1947 (Gide-strabisme) to 1948 (Hegel-as-ambiguïté) to 1951 (bonne ambiguïté). The Trần Đức Thảo / Kojève 1948 controversy becomes a structural moment in MP's late ontology rather than a footnote.

Status History

  • 2026-05-04 — created as candidate, anchored in Inédits II editorial reproduction of N.D.L.R.
  • 2026-05-04 (Phase 8 run, later same day) — promoted to live with the explicit caveat that the attribution sub-claim (MP rather than Sartre or another TM editor) is probable but not certain. Saint Aubert's prior philological work on TM editorial signatures (referenced via saintaubert-2021-etre-et-chair-ii) supports the MP attribution; combined with MP's role as gérant of Temps Modernes in 1948 and the internal-evidence engagement with topics MP works on elsewhere (ambiguïté, master/slave totalization, Hegel-question), the attribution rises above mere conjecture. The 3-test gate passes: (1) the philological claim is contestable on attribution grounds (the N.D.L.R. could be by Sartre); (2) anchored in Inédits II editorial reproduction of the September 1948 N.D.L.R. + cross-reference to V&I working notes (1959–61) for the late déhiscence lexicon; (3) Counterpressure documents the anonymous-signature attribution risk, the single-occurrence weakness (MP does not use déhiscence extensively until 1959–61), and the prefiguration vs attribution sub-claim distinction. Confidence stays medium because the attribution remains probabilistic; promotion to supported would require either (a) direct AIHM-archive confirmation of the MP attribution, or (b) corroborating MP-text use of déhiscence in 1948–53 (the gap years between the 1948 N.D.L.R. and the V&I working notes).
