Imagination's dialectical function — distinct from eidetic-variational and hyletic-modal — equips MP's late phenomenology to do ideology-critique without sublation

ID: dialectical-imagination-as-ideology-critique Title: Imagination's dialectical function — distinct from eidetic-variational and hyletic-modal — equips MP's late phenomenology to do ideology-critique without sublation Status: candidate Confidence: medium Claim type: interpretive / structural-parallel Created: 2026-05-07 Updated: 2026-07-21 Sources: mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible, merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity Wiki homes: imaginary-mp, hyper-dialectic, politics-mp

Claim

Per Popa's reading (M-C 2026 Ch 1), MP's late phenomenology distinguishes three functions of imagination: eidetic-variational (the Husserlian function of essence-discovery through variation); hyletic-modal (the imaginary-modality function MP's late ontology develops); and dialectical (the function Popa identifies as distinctive). The dialectical function operates by immanent critique without sublation: imagination produces alternative possibilities that contest given configurations without resolving them into a higher synthesis. This equips MP's late phenomenology to do ideology-critique without sublation — structurally parallel to Adorno's negative dialectics and Marcuse's negative thinking, but via phenomenological-imaginative rather than dialectical-materialist routes. The dialectical imagination is the philosophical source of MP's hyper-dialectique — dialectic without synthesis is dialectical-imaginative critique without sublation.

Evidence

  • mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics — Popa, Ch 1 §3–§4. The cardinal articulation of the three-fold imagination distinction with the dialectical function as ideology-critical.
  • merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisibleV&I Ch 2 "Interrogation and Dialectic," pp. 89–95: the hyper-dialectique as "dialectic without synthesis … not scepticism" (extraction-note claims 15–16, incl. the p. 95 quote; also source-page Key Passages). (Bullet retargeted 2026-07-21 per C2 review: the hyper-dialectique is Ch 2 main text, not the working notes, and the former "imaginary register" clause was unanchored in any V&I artifact.)
  • merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivityI&P the institution-course's articulation of dialectical institution.
  • Cross-corroborates with the existing hyper-dialectic page §"What it does" (dialectic without synthesis).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Adorno and Marcuse not in raw/. The cross-tradition anchor (negative dialectics / negative thinking) is unverifiable on the wiki. The structural-parallel reading rests on Popa's mediation.
  • Single-chapter dependency within Mendoza-Canales 2026. Popa's Ch 1 is the sole anchor.
  • The three-fold imagination distinction is Popa's interpretive synthesis. MP himself does not enumerate three functions of imagination; the eidetic / hyletic / dialectical taxonomy is Popa's reconstruction. Standard readings of MP's imagination treat eidetic and hyletic as the principal axis; the dialectical function is interpretively novel.
  • "Ideology-critique without sublation" claims much. The claim that MP's phenomenology equips ideology-critique requires showing that MP's late ontology does ideology-critique work — not merely that it could. The textual support for MP-as-ideology-critic is mostly in the political writings (H&T, AdV) rather than in V&I or Eye and Mind.
  • C2 refuter objection (rival-reading lens, consolidation 2026-07-21, wf_81b4545d-850): Rival reading (direction-of-derivation reversal + object-level Marcuse), refuter panel 2026-07-21 — blocks candidate→live as worded. The claim's capstone sentence — "The dialectical imagination is the philosophical source of MP's hyper-dialectique" — reverses the corpus's own well-anchored genealogy, and the same evidence is at least as well explained the other way around. (a) hyper-dialectic (wiki/concepts/hyper-dialectic.md, confidence: high) anchors hyper-dialectique's genesis in the 1954–55 ternary-vs-binary dialectic (I&P 213, [214 verso] — §"The 1954–55 Origin"), the 1955 AD Epilogue (AD 203–204 — §"The 1955 Political-Historical Ancestor"), and the Natu2 1958 first use per Saint Aubert (§"Genealogy: First Use in Natu2 1958") — a political-ontological lineage with no imagination-function anywhere in it. (b) Popa's own argumentative order runs the same direction: the non-binary dialectic is established first from I&P p. 198 and AdV p. 57 (extraction note Arg #4, wiki/sources/.extraction-mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics.md lines 781, 824–826), and the imagination-function is introduced afterwards (§3, Arg #5, line 783) as an operation of that dialectic — so dialectical imagination is an application of the already-instituted dialectic-without-synthesis to illusion-decipherment, not its "philosophical source." (c) The asserted structural parallel "to Adorno's negative dialectics and Marcuse's negative thinking" is rivaled by a deflationary reading the anchors support better: in Popa's Ch 1, Marcuse figures only object-level — "the political horizon of the 'one-dimensional man'" as the ideological condition phenomenology should resist (raw/Merleau-Ponty- Institution-Ontology-Politics.md line 686 + fn 73 at line 695, the chapter's sole occurrence) — and Adorno does not appear in Ch 1 at all (only at raw line 2785, a footnote in a later chapter citing Neofetou; the phrases "negative dialectics" and "negative thinking" appear nowhere in the raw volume). The extraction note accordingly hedges the parallel to "structural-parallel undertones to Adorno/Marcuse" (line 870); the entry hardens "undertones" into a flat parallel. (d) The entry's rendering of the function — imagination "produces alternative possibilities that contest given configurations without resolving them" — is rivaled by the anchored decipherment reading: illusions are deciphered against the social whole they presuppose, "they hide something only by exposing it" (AdV p. 42, extraction Arg #5 and quote at line 828) — an unmasking-hermeneutic operation, not Marcusean possibility-production; the extraction note's own diagnostics record that the "mechanism of 'dialectical function of imagination' [is] not given operational account for non-art cases" and that the leap to political resistance is "argumentatively underdeveloped" (line 859). None of the four existing Counterpressure bullets confronts (a)–(d); the first bullet even presumes Popa mediates an Adorno/Marcuse parallel, when the chapter contains no method-level parallel to mediate. Supplementary: the entry's own Status History promotion conditions — (a) Adorno/Marcuse ingest, or (b) a corroborating secondary MP-as-ideology-critic source anchoring the function in MP's text — remain unmet as of 2026-07-21 (no Adorno/Marcuse primary text in raw/; entry unchanged since 2026-05-07). Until the "philosophical source" sentence and the hardened Adorno/Marcuse parallel are dropped or independently defeated, the claim as worded does not survive the rival.

Payoff

If supportable, the claim re-positions imaginary-mp within an explicitly critical-political register: the imaginary is not only ratio essendi (per claims#vortex-as-ratio-essendi-of-being candidate) but also the philosophical seat of MP's ideology-critical capacity. Coordinate with claims#politics-of-distraction-thesis (candidate) and claims#humanism-of-meaning-not-truth (candidate): if politics is constitutively a politics of distraction operating in vivre-selon mode, then dialectical imagination is the philosophical resource that contests the distraction-regime without imposing a counter-regime. The wiki's hyper-dialectic page gains a third register (dialectic without synthesis as ideology-critique without sublation) alongside the V&I register (dialectic without synthesis as ontological-perceptual structure) and the I&P register (institution as dialectical accumulation).

Status History

  • 2026-05-07 — created as candidate (Phase 8 tenth run) after re-evaluation of the 9 deferred M-C corrective claims from the ninth run. Status candidate rather than live because: (a) Adorno and Marcuse not in raw/ — the cross-tradition anchor is unverifiable; (b) single-chapter dependency; (c) the three-fold imagination distinction is Popa's interpretive reconstruction, not MP's explicit articulation; (d) the "ideology-critique without sublation" claim requires textual support beyond what M-C 2026 Ch 1 articulates. Promotion to live requires (a) ingesting Adorno's Negative Dialectics and Marcuse's relevant work for direct verification, or (b) corroborating secondary reading of MP-as-ideology-critic that anchors the dialectical-imagination function in MP's text.
