Claim

Chouraqui (2016 Order of the Earth fn. 31, p. 69) frames his disagreement with Renaud Barbaras as "purely historical": Barbaras (Dynamique de la Manifestation, Vrin 2013) holds that the dynamic ontology of pure relations is what MP should have held but didn't; Chouraqui argues MP did hold it. The dispute hides a substantive philosophical question: whether an "ontology of pure relations without terms" is coherent at all, and whether MP's late corpus systematizes such an ontology (Chouraqui) or only gestures at it (Barbaras). The wiki should track this disagreement explicitly rather than collapse it into either side's position.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The disagreement turns on whether MP's cross-text coherence (1959–60 lectures, V&I, late working notes) constitutes a systematic position or a working draft — both Chouraqui and Barbaras read carefully, and the textual evidence under-determines the verdict.
  • Chouraqui frames the dispute as "purely historical" but the philosophical stakes are real: if Barbaras is right, the wiki should not endorse MP as holding a dynamic ontology of pure relations without terms; if Chouraqui is right, the wiki should; the in-between status (Chouraqui-attributed but Barbaras-resisted) is the actually-defensible position.
  • Strong false-friend caution: Barbaras's Dynamique itself is not a wiki-ingested source — the false-friend caution applies specifically because the wiki cannot adjudicate without ingesting Barbaras's primary text. The temptation to side with Chouraqui (because the wiki has more Chouraqui content than Barbaras content) is itself a methodological hazard.

Raw fn. 31 (raw/Merleau-Ponty and the Order of the Earth Frank Chouraqui.md, lines 571–575) reads: the ontology-of-pure-relations reading "is therefore in full agreement with the argument of Renaud Barbaras's Dynamique de la Manifestation. My point of disagreement with Barbaras is purely historical: this is a view he believes Merleau-Ponty should have held, but didn't." Two consequences for the claim as worded (wiki/claims.md §chouraqui-vs-barbaras-on-mp-dynamic-ontology, ### Claim). (1) The first "hidden question" — "whether an 'ontology of pure relations without terms' is coherent at all" — is no disputant's position: Barbaras endorses the ontology (it is the argument of his own book, per Chouraqui's "full agreement"), and Chouraqui endorses it; the coherence doubt originates in the wiki's own adversarial diagnostic (wiki/sources/.extraction-chouraqui-2016-order-of-the-earth.md Part A "Assumed without argument," line 180), which moreover mischaracterizes fn. 31 in reverse — it states "Barbaras's worry (which Chouraqui acknowledges in fn. 31) is precisely that this view, while attributable to MP, may not actually work as a metaphysical thesis," whereas the raw footnote has Barbaras denying the attribution and affirming the thesis. A wiki-generated coherence question is a legitimate Open Question for hyper-dialectic/precession, but the claim attributes it to the dispute ("the dispute hides..."), which fn. 31 does not warrant. (2) The systematizes-(Chouraqui)-vs-only-gestures-at-(Barbaras) axis is unanchored: fn. 31 gives Barbaras the flat position "should have held, but didn't" — non-attribution, not partial attribution-by-gesture; "gestures at" descends from the extraction note's What's-Not-Obvious #3 inference (line 259), not from any Chouraqui or Barbaras passage. The second evidence bullet cannot repair this: Barbaras's ch. 1 tripartition in alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy (extraction note argument #1, line 6; concept entry, line 40; motif entry lines 130–131) concerns the univocity of chair (ontic/ontological/transcendental-as-desire) and nowhere addresses whether MP systematized or gestured at a dynamic ontology of pure relations — "consistent with the Dynamique line" is too weak to attest Barbaras's side of THIS dispute, so the wiki's only attestation of Barbaras's position remains Chouraqui's own one-footnote report. The existing Counterpressure does not defeat the rival: bullet (b) asserts "the philosophical stakes are real" for the wiki's endorsement decision (which the rival concedes) but never confronts the possibility that neither disputant raises the coherence question and that "purely historical" is simply accurate. Under the rival, the claim's core sentence fails restatement as worded; what survives is only the attribution disagreement fn. 31 actually states. Corroborating: the entry's own Status History (2026-05-09 creation line) and extraction-note Part D candidate #5 (line 277) condition promotion above candidate on ingesting Barbaras's Dynamique or targeted MP raw-source adjudication; neither condition has been met as of 2026-07-21.

Payoff

The claim names a structural disagreement that the wiki must hold open rather than resolve prematurely. It prevents the wiki from drifting into Chouraqui-by-default endorsement of "MP systematized dynamic ontology" when the corpus evidence is genuinely contested. The Open Question framing on hyper-dialectic and precession preserves the dialectical disagreement as a Position rather than smoothing it over.
