MP's "true humanism" is humanism of meaning-making rather than truth-seeking

ID: humanism-of-meaning-not-truth Title: MP's "true humanism" is humanism of meaning-making rather than truth-seeking Status: candidate Confidence: medium Claim type: interpretive / thesis-central / genealogical Created: 2026-05-05 Updated: 2026-05-05 Sources: mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics, chouraqui-2025-healing-schneider Wiki homes: politics-mp, true-humanism

Claim

MP's "true humanism" is best read — across the 1946–60 political writings ("Note on Machiavelli" 1949, Humanism and Terror 1947, Adventures of the Dialectic 1955, Eye and Mind 1960, the 1953 inaugural lecture) — as a humanism of meaning-making rather than a humanism of truth-seeking. Humanity cannot be conceived prior to the practices of communication and communion; the human is "essentially a hermeneutic being," so any humanism that posits an a priori human substratum (essentialism) imports the bivalent logic of truth into politics, and bivalence in politics produces violence (the "clean-hands problem"). The genealogy runs Fessard → Kojève → MP via the 1933–39 Kojève lectures; "humanisme réel" is Fessard's coinage that MP appropriates for his own use against essentialist humanism.

Evidence

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Conflates early "true humanism" with late ontology. The 1949 "Note on Machiavelli" is in MP's Sense and Non-Sense (1948) period; the late ontology of V&I and Eye and Mind is 1959–61. Whether these constitute "the same true humanism" is partly Chouraqui's reconstruction, not MP's explicit statement.
  • The Fessard genealogy depends on Smyth's reading. The Smyth note on Fessard is the philological anchor for the Fessard → Kojève → MP transmission; this depends on one secondary source.
  • The meaning-not-truth reading is interpretively strong but contestable. Standard liberal-political readings of MP take "true humanism" as a critique of false humanism (essentialist / Soviet objectivist) without committing to the strong meaning-makes-truth-derivative reading. Chouraqui's reading is sharper.
  • Single-chapter convergence within Mendoza-Canales 2026. Chouraqui's Ch 10 is the sole anchor within the volume; cross-Chouraqui works (Healing Schneider 2025, Circulus Vitiosus Deus 2016) corroborate but again from one author.

Payoff

If supportable, the claim positions MP's politics-mp page on a thesis-central reading: MP's politics is not a politics of truth but a politics of meaning-making. This complements claims#politics-of-distraction-thesis (candidate, this run): the politics of distraction is the operative form of the meaning-not-truth humanism. It also connects to claims#bukharin-as-mp-exemplar-phenomenological-political-ethics (live): MP's reading of Bukharin in Humanism and Terror presupposes the meaning-not-truth framework, since Bukharin's confession is interpreted as a meaningful political act rather than as a truth-statement about facts.

Status History

  • 2026-05-05 — created as candidate (Phase 8 ninth run) after the mendoza-canales-2026-institution-ontology-politics ingest. Status candidate rather than live because: (a) the cross-period reading conflates early "true humanism" with late ontology; (b) the Fessard genealogy depends on a single secondary reading (Smyth); (c) standard liberal-political readings of MP do not commit to the strong meaning-makes-truth-derivative reading; (d) intra-Chouraqui convergence (Ch 10 of M-C plus Healing Schneider 2025 plus Circulus 2016 plus Paradox of Power 2018 plus Post-Truth Politics 2019) is one author across multiple works. Promotion to live requires (a) independent secondary corroboration outside Chouraqui's own work, or (b) targeted ingest of Fessard's "humanisme réel" writings to verify the genealogy.
