Embodiment's reciprocity makes sovereignty self-contradictory (Chouraqui 2021 ch. 9)

ID: embodiment-disproves-sovereignty Title: Embodiment's reciprocity makes sovereignty self-contradictory (Chouraqui 2021 ch. 9) Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: structural-parallel Created: 2026-05-09 Updated: 2026-05-09 Sources: chouraqui-2021-body-and-embodiment, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible Wiki homes: politics-mp, reversibility, circulus-vitiosus-deus

Claim

Chouraqui's Body and Embodiment (2021) ch. 9 argues that sovereignty is contradicted by embodiment's reciprocity — to act upon the world is necessarily to be acted upon by it; having a body means having power and being exposed to power. The phenomenological insight (reciprocity + individuation) makes sovereign power (pure power without resistance, without vulnerability) a self-contradiction. The Western political tradition's sustained attempt from Plato to Hobbes to construct sovereignty is therefore a project that cannot succeed on its own terms — because the body refuses unidirectional power. This is the embodiment-side companion to existing supported claims#circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology and the politics-side companion-candidate claims#being-is-power-chouraqui-perceptual-faith-shared-structure.

Evidence

  • chouraqui-2021-body-and-embodiment ch. 9 pp. 145–174. Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a entries on ch. 9 + Part D candidate #1.
  • Husserl Ideas II touching-touched paradigm (cited at ch. 5 of Chouraqui 2021) — the phenomenological anchor for the reciprocity premise.
  • Freud Totem and Taboo on the king as "guarded and guarded against" (cited at ch. 9) — the structural-anthropological evidence for sovereignty's exposure-side.
  • Cross-source bridge: existing supported claims#circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology (Chouraqui's earlier articulation of recognition-and-institution as shared structure across ontology and politics).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The move from "embodiment entails reciprocity" to "sovereignty is contradictory" depends on a structural-analogy between sovereignty-in-politics and transcendence-in-metaphysics — extraction-note Pass 3 Part A flagged this as the book's weakest point, noting Chouraqui's claim that the parallel is "more than prima facie or simply semantic" but underdeveloped as causal/constitutive.
  • The political-tradition history Chouraqui invokes (Plato through Hobbes) is treated schematically — a serious historian of political philosophy might resist the totalizing framing.
  • Competing reading: classical sovereignty theorists may concede that empirical power requires vulnerability while still defending normative sovereignty as a regulative ideal — the contradiction Chouraqui claims may apply only to one register.
  • The existing supported claims#circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology already operates in adjacent territory but does not collapse the ontology/politics distinction in this exact way; the relation between the two claims needs articulation.

Payoff

The claim makes the body-political extension of the recognition-and-institution operator explicit. Without it, the wiki's politics-MP track risks reading sovereignty as a separate domain from MP's ontology; with it, sovereignty's unsustainability becomes a consequence of the same structural feature (reciprocity + institution-believed-as-recognition) that makes MP's ontology-of-ontology hyper-dialectical. For Paper A and the politics-mp page, this anchors the Chouraqui-derived reading of sovereignty's structural failure.

Status History

  • 2026-05-09 — created as live (Phase 8 thirteenth run, Layer 2 backfill harvest under user pre-authorization). 3-test gate passes: contestable (the structural-analogy critique flagged in Pass 3 Part A is the rival); evidence anchored at ch. 9 + Husserl Ideas II touching-touched + Freud Totem and Taboo; counterpressure on the structural-analogy critique recorded. Promoted under user pre-authorization for any promotions warranted by gates this run. The supported-grade unification with the recognition-and-institution operator family is queued for a future run.
