Chouraqui's *Contemporary Philosophy* ch. 9 — perceptual faith and power share the recognition+institution structure

Claim

In Contemporary Philosophy (2019) ch. 9, Chouraqui argues that perceptual faith and power share the same structure: each is a unity of recognition and institution — perceptual faith institutes reality while believing it merely recognizes it; power requires obedience the subject institutes while believing it merely recognizes legitimate authority. The recognition-and-institution operator is structurally homologous across the ontological and political registers. This is the politics-side companion to the existing supported claim claims#circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology (Chouraqui's earlier articulation of the same circuit on the ontology side).

Evidence

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The connection from "being as power" to actual political analysis remains abstract in the chapter — risks making everything political and nothing specifically so (extraction-note Pass 3 Part A diagnostic explicitly flagged this).
  • The structural homology may be too tidy: perceptual faith operates on a world (relatively stable), power operates on agents (relatively unstable) — the symmetry may break under interrogation about temporality and reversibility.
  • Competing reading: Foucault's autonomy-of-power thesis explicitly refuses ontological grounding, and Chouraqui's chapter does not defeat that refusal so much as bracket it.
  • False-friend caution: the homology is tempting but the political and ontological registers may not be cleanly substitutable — the wiki should flag this as a Position rather than collapse the registers. Verify against Chouraqui's later 2014 Ambiguity and the Absolute and 2016 Order of the Earth before pursuing supported promotion.

Payoff

The claim makes visible a structural operator (recognition-and-institution) that runs through Chouraqui's MP-corpus across the ontology side (existing supported circulus-vitiosus-deus) and the politics side (this claim) and the embodiment side (companion candidate claims#embodiment-disproves-sovereignty). Treating these three claims as a family rather than three independent claims sets up a future supported-grade unification ("Chouraqui's recognition-and-institution operator across ontology, politics, and embodiment") if the operator's robustness across registers can be defended. Without this claim, the politics-side reading remains scattered across Position notes; with it, the homology is explicit and contestable.

Status History

  • 2026-05-09 — created as live (Phase 8 thirteenth run, Layer 2 backfill harvest under user pre-authorization). 3-test gate passes: contestable (Foucault's autonomy-of-power is the rival); evidence anchored at ch. 9 + V&I 197 + Signs Note on Machiavelli; counterpressure with explicit false-friend caution recorded. Promoted to live rather than candidate because the recognition-and-institution operator is already supported on the ontology side (circulus-vitiosus-deus); this claim extends an already-warranted operator to a parallel register. The supported-grade promotion is queued for a future run after the three-claim family is unified or the cross-register operator's robustness is independently confirmed.
