Bedingung / Sache an sich (Condition / The Thing Itself, Hegel)
Bedingung (condition) and Sache an sich (the thing itself) are the paired transitional categories that bridge Grund and Existenz in the Erster Abschnitt of the Doctrine of Essence (GW 11 raw 5180–5263). The cardinal formulation: "wenn alle Bedingungen einer Sache vollständig vorhanden sind, so tritt sie in Wirklichkeit" (raw 6105, paralleled at the bridge from Grund to Existenz) — when all conditions of a thing are completely present, it enters actuality.
Sache an sich names the absolutely-unconditioned (raw 5217): the unity of Grund and Bedingung as Sache; the categorial point at which Grund and Bedingung coincide and pass into Existenz. Sache an sich is to be sharply distinguished from Kant's Ding an sich: the Sache is the unconditioned that appears (essence in its movement); the Ding an sich is the unknown-behind-appearance that Kantian transcendental idealism postulates and that Hegel rejects.
Key Points
- Bedingung is the content-pole of Grund. Where Grund supplies the form of grounding (the that), Bedingung supplies the content (the what). They are reciprocally constitutive.
- "Wenn alle Bedingungen einer Sache vollständig vorhanden sind, so tritt sie in Wirklichkeit" (raw 6105). When all conditions are present, the thing enters actuality. Marx and the Marxist tradition would later seize on this formulation as the categorial home of praxis-conditions.
- The Bedingung-Sache-Existenz progression. Grund passes through Bedingung (its content-pole) into Sache an sich (their unity) into Existenz (the mediated immediacy that results).
- Sache an sich ≠ Kant's Ding an sich. Sache is the unconditioned that appears — essence in its movement; Ding an sich is the unknown-behind-appearance Kantian postulate. Hegel's terminological distinction is structural.
- Sache an sich is absolut Unbedingt (raw 5217). The absolutely-unconditioned is the unity of Grund and Bedingung as Sache — where the conditioning-relation has fully cancelled itself into its result.
- Marxist receptive line. The "alle Bedingungen vollständig vorhanden" formula is cardinal for the Marxist tradition's account of revolutionary moments — the categorial home for "ripe conditions" and "revolutionary situation" doctrines.
- Anti-Kantian Ding an sich. The Sache-an-sich / Ding-an-sich distinction is the philological-conceptual marker of Hegel's break with transcendental idealism on the question of essence's manifestation.
What the Concept Does
- It supplies the categorial bridge from Grund to Existenz. Bedingung is the content-pole; Sache an sich is the unity that passes into Existenz.
- It supplies the cardinal Marxist categorial reference. "Wenn alle Bedingungen einer Sache vollständig vorhanden sind, so tritt sie in Wirklichkeit" — the categorial home of praxis-conditions and revolutionary situation doctrines.
- It distinguishes Sache an sich from Ding an sich. Hegel's terminological move is the philological marker of his break with Kantian transcendental idealism on essence-manifestation.
- It articulates the absolutely-unconditioned as the unity of Grund and Bedingung — categorial completion of the Grund-section.
What It Rejects
- Kant's Ding an sich as the unknown-behind-appearance — the Sache appears, the Ding-an-sich is empty postulate.
- The picture of grounding-relation as final categorial structure — Grund cancels itself into Bedingung-Sache-Existenz.
- The picture of conditions as merely empirical — Bedingungen are categorial moments, not contingent empirical circumstances.
Connections
- bridges Grund and Existenz
- supplies the formula "wenn alle Bedingungen einer Sache vollständig vorhanden sind, so tritt sie in Wirklichkeit" (raw 6105) — operative in Wirklichkeit as well
- is distinguished from Kant's Ding an sich — Sache appears, Ding an sich is empty postulate
- passes into Existenz — the categorial result of the Grund-Bedingung-Sache progression
- is the categorial seed of the Marxist praxis-conditions / revolutionary situation doctrines (receptive line not yet on wiki)
