Bestimmtheit / Bestimmung / Beschaffenheit / Grenze (Determinacy Quartet)
Hegel's four-term vocabulary for the categorial structure of Daseyn: Bestimmtheit (determinacy in general), Bestimmung (the something's intrinsic determination), Beschaffenheit (its extrinsic constitution), and Grenze (the limit where Bestimmung and Beschaffenheit meet and divide). Together, the four constitute the categorial decomposition of Etwas (a determinate something) in the second chapter of the Bestimmtheit / Qualität section of the Doctrine of Being (GW 21 raw ~1818–2050).
Any something (Etwas) is constituted by its relation to an other (Anderes). The four-term decomposition shows how: otherness reflected into the something becomes Bestimmung (what it is in itself); otherness reflected into the relation becomes Beschaffenheit (what it is in relation to others); the tension between them is the Grenze that both joins and separates. Etwas and Anderes are not externally related; each is the Anderes of its Anderes.
Key Points
- Bestimmtheit (determinacy in general): the fact of any determination; what makes a being a this rather than a that.
- Bestimmung (intrinsic determination): what the something is in itself — its standing determinacy, its character considered apart from external relations.
- Beschaffenheit (extrinsic constitution): what the something is in relation to others — its modifiable properties, those that vary with circumstance.
- Grenze (limit): the place where Bestimmung and Beschaffenheit meet and divide; what both separates the something from its other and joins them as moments of one Etwas.
- Etwas and Anderes are reciprocally constitutive. "Anderssein is no merely external relation but the something's own moment — each Etwas is the Anderes of its Anderes." Bestimmtheit is therefore relational at root, not intrinsic.
- Anti-empiricist. The picture of a thing-with-independent-properties is rejected: properties (Beschaffenheit) only emerge in the relation, but the relation is internal to the thing's own structure.
- The quartet is structurally locked to the Sein-section but cross-referenced in Wesen — where the Reflexionsbestimmungen recapitulate at a higher level the same difference-structure the quartet articulates at the Sein-level.
What the Concept Does
- It supplies the categorial decomposition of Etwas. Any determinate something is articulated through the four-term structure.
- It dissolves the empiricist thing-with-properties picture. Properties are Beschaffenheit, internal to the thing's relational structure, not independent attributes.
- It introduces the Grenze that grounds Fürsichseyn and the bad/true infinity distinction. The Grenze becomes a Schranke (restriction-against) in Endlichkeit; the Schranke as Sollen drives the transition to Unendlichkeit.
- It prefigures the Reflexionsbestimmungen. The Bestimmtheit / Bestimmung / Beschaffenheit / Grenze quartet is the Sein-register analogue of the Wesen-register four-fold Identität / Verschiedenheit / Gegensatz / Widerspruch.
What It Rejects
- The empiricist picture of a thing-with-independent-properties.
- The Aristotelian to ti ên einai as essence — Bestimmung is not yet essence; this is still Sein-stage determinacy.
- The two-term thing/properties model — the four-term decomposition is irreducible.
Connections
- decomposes Daseyn / Etwas into its categorial moments
- is the Sein-register analogue of the Wesen-register four Reflexionsbestimmungen (Identität / Verschiedenheit / Gegensatz / Widerspruch)
- contains the Grenze that grounds the Endlichkeit / Schranke / Sollen sequence — see schlechte-vs-wahre-unendlichkeit
- is sublated in Fürsichseyn — pure self-relation has internalized the otherness of Anderes
- anticipates the Bestimmung/Beschaffenheit-style decomposition that recurs throughout the WdL whenever a categorial moment is articulated in its intrinsic and extrinsic registers
Open Questions
- Does the four-term structure generalize beyond Hegelian categorial logic? Contemporary metaphysics of properties (Lewis, Sider, Schaffer) gives multi-term accounts of intrinsicality / extrinsicality that could be compared.
- Is Beschaffenheit cleanly distinguishable from Bestimmung? The textual treatment moves between the two registers in ways that may not preserve the conceptual clarity Hegel asserts.
