Claim

The wiki's existing ecart page treats the 1953 *Le monde sensible et le monde de l'expression* (MSME) as "the earliest attestation" of écart in MP's work, in the perceptual register. The 2026-05-16 PbP ingest reveals that Le problème de la parole (PbP, also 1953-54) carries an equally cardinal écart-anchor in the linguistic register. The two 1953 courses are contemporaneous (MSME first course, PbP Thursday course of MP's first Collège de France year), and their écart-anchors are complementary halves of the same operative move: MP is simultaneously discovering écart in perception (MSME) and in language (PbP). PbP's marginal note at folio [26v(36)] — "le signe (et la signification) = écart" — is among the earliest direct technical attestations in MP's corpus. The PbP cluster also includes pli ("pli de langage ou pli de la pensée ou encore écart", PbP [39(6)]) and niveau ("le tout est «niveau» ou «fond» et la parole écart", PbP [38(4)]). The complete écart-niveau-pli cluster, generalized in V&I's late ontology, is anticipated in PbP's linguistic-philosophical register five-six years earlier than V&I.

Evidence

  • merleau-ponty-2020-probleme-de-la-parole — direct anchor. The cardinal marginal note "le signe (et la signification) = écart" is at PbP [26v(36)], written by MP in his own hand alongside Saussure's diacritical theory of meaning. The écart-niveau-pli cluster is operative at PbP [38(4)], [39(6)], [42(8)], [78(2)], [83-84], [88v(6)]. The cardinal conclusion at PbP [135(10)] is MP's own synthesis: "la signification (l'«idée» au sens de Proust) est toujours écart entre 2 ou plusieurs significations, apparition d'un vide déterminé, non possession intellectuelle d'un contenu." The second conclusion at PbP [137(10)] restates this even more compactly. Robert's editorial note ad PbP [39(6)] makes the genealogy explicit: "Plis et écart sont ici des concepts décisifs... Dans les recherches ultimes de Merleau-Ponty, ils acquièrent un sens ontologique."
  • merleau-ponty-2020-sensible-world-expression — the perceptual register parallel anchor. MSME 27: "the circle = mode of divergence"; MSME 21: vertical and horizontal as levels; MSME 28: perceptual meaning as divergence with respect to a level. The MSME usage is perceptual-diacritical, applied to the structure of perception; the PbP usage is linguistic-diacritical, applied to the structure of language (and then re-extended to perception, intersubjectivity, painting, music, and writing).
  • merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible — the late register where the écart-niveau-pli cluster receives its ontological development. V&I p. 255 explicitly cites Saussure's diacritical theory as "confirming the idea of perception as écart by relation to a niveau." Robert's PbP postface (p. 245) connects PbP directly to this V&I passage, identifying PbP as the source-text from which V&I's ontological écart derives.
  • merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity — the immediately subsequent register where écart receives its temporal / institutional development. The 1954-55 course continues the écart analysis but in the register of institution / sedimentation / retroactive temporality.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • MSME could be considered structurally sufficient without PbP. A rival reading would claim that MSME (the perceptual-register 1953 anchor) is enough to ground the V&I-era ontological écart, and that PbP is "merely" the linguistic complement. The wiki's ecart page has worked from MSME alone. This rival is plausible but weak: V&I's écart-niveau-pli cluster works equally in linguistic and perceptual registers, so PbP's linguistic-register pre-history is not redundant.
  • The Saint Aubert "MSME 1953 diacritique extension" framework is already in place in ecart §"The diacritique extension — MSME 1953 origin." This claim extends but does not displace Saint Aubert's reading. The risk: the "MSME 1953 origin" framing could be misread as ruling out a contemporaneous PbP origin. The 2026-05-16 update to the ecart page (§"The 1953 Dual Origin") explicitly preserves and complements Saint Aubert's reading.
  • Confidence is medium because the relation between MSME's perceptual écart and PbP's linguistic écart is not fully worked out within PbP itself. PbP applies écart to language and to perception and to intersubjectivity, but the relations between these applications are not systematically articulated. The 1953-55 transition zone (per General Rule 18) is exactly the period where this articulation is in process; PbP captures it in flagrante but does not complete it.

Payoff

If supportable, the claim shifts the wiki's écart-genealogy from a single-source 1953 origin (MSME) to a dual-source 1953 origin (MSME + PbP). This is important because: (a) it gives the late-MP ontological écart a broader genealogical anchor, supporting the late ontology's claim to operate across multiple registers; (b) it answers the existing ecart page's open question "how does the écart relate to Derrida's différance?" with the response that MP's écart is not a Derridean-style sign-only structure but a cross-register operation; (c) it strengthens the wiki's chiasm page, since the chiasm "is imminent and never realized" because of the écart — and the dual-register genesis of écart strengthens the cross-register chiasm thesis. For the late ontology in general, this claim establishes PbP as a load-bearing source rather than a supplementary one.

Status History

  • 2026-05-16 — created as candidate during the PbP ingest. 3-test gate evaluation: (1) Contestable: yes, the MSME-alone rival reading is plausible. (2) Evidence anchored: yes, multiple direct PbP-source anchors plus the MSME and V&I cross-references. (3) Counterpressure: rival reading + framing-dependency caveat + non-articulated relations within PbP recorded. Recommendation: promote to live after the ecart page §"The 1953 Dual Origin" section has been independently reviewed.
  • 2026-05-16 — promoted candidate → live (audit 14 Phase 8 fourteenth run). claim-promotion-reviewer verdict: 3-test PASS; Test 5 CONCERN — PbP folio [26v(36)] marginal-quote anchor ("le signe (et la signification) = écart") and V&I p.255 Saussure-citation anchor both pending targeted Rule 18 raw-check; the marginal-note status of the cardinal anchor is the principal interpretive question. Held at live; future supported promotion conditional on raw-source verification of [26v(36)] marginal note and V&I p.255 Saussure citation.
