*Le problème de la parole* (1953-54) is the missing middle term in the genealogy of the *parole parlante / parole parlée* distinction between PoP (1945) and Signs (1960)

ID: pbp-as-middle-term-parole-parlante-parlee-1953-54 Title: Le problème de la parole (1953-54) is the missing middle term in the genealogy of the parole parlante / parole parlée distinction between PoP (1945) and Signs (1960) Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical Created: 2026-05-16 Updated: 2026-05-16 Sources: merleau-ponty-2020-probleme-de-la-parole, merleau-ponty-1945-phenomenology-of-perception, merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world, merleau-ponty-1964-signs Wiki homes: speaking-spoken-speech, indirect-language

Claim

The wiki's existing trajectory for parole parlante / parole parlée runs: PoP 1945 (the linguistic-gesture doctrine) → Prose of the World 1950-52 (the reading-as-fire metaphor) → Signs 1960 (the indirect-language generalization). The 1953-54 *Le problème de la parole* (PbP) is the missing middle term between PoP's gestural doctrine and Signs's diacritical-indirect-language doctrine. In PbP, MP rewires the distinction through Saussurean diacritical theory (PbP [22v(28)]–[28v(40)]; cardinal écart-marginal at [26v(36)]), through Goldstein's aphasia (PbP [80(4)]–[90]; attitude catégoriale-loss as loss of parole parlante), through child language acquisition (PbP [56]–[78v(2)]), and through literary practice (Proust, PbP [93]–[127]; Bergotte deception as exposed écart between parole empirique and parole littéraire). The mature 1953-54 formulation is "parole créatrice, originaire" (PbP [135v(10)]).

Evidence

  • merleau-ponty-2020-probleme-de-la-parole — direct anchor: PbP Lessons 3-5 develop the Saussurean rewiring of the parlante/parlée distinction; PbP Part I §II develops the aphasia confirmation (Schneider continues here under "S" at PbP [80(4)]); PbP Part II develops the literary application; cardinal conclusion at PbP [135(10)]: "signification = écart entre 2 ou plusieurs significations, apparition d'un vide déterminé... en se faisant docile à la «déformation cohérente» des significations acquises et des signes" — the cardinal statement of the mature 1953-54 formulation.
  • merleau-ponty-1945-phenomenology-of-perception — Ch VI (Part One): the 1945 linguistic-gesture doctrine that PbP transforms. PoP p. 237 introduces the parlante/parlée distinction; PoP Ch VI subsections g-h ground it in the linguistic-gesture doctrine.
  • merleau-ponty-1973-prose-of-the-world — Ch 2-3 (drafted 1950-52): the reading-as-fire metaphor that figures the parlée → parlante transition; PoW p. 50f. poussée. PbP's empirical-scientific articulation builds on PoW's literary articulation.
  • merleau-ponty-1964-signs — "Indirect Language and the Voices of Silence" pp. 39–83 (1952 essay → 1960 Signs volume) and "On the Phenomenology of Language" pp. 84–97. The 1960 generalization of the distinction into indirect-language doctrine that PbP's 1953-54 work makes possible.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • PoW as the missing middle term, not PbP. A rival reading would claim that PoW (drafted 1950-52, published 1969) is the missing middle term and that PbP is "merely" a contemporaneous lecture-course articulation of the same material. This rival is plausible: PoW predates PbP and contains the cardinal reading-as-fire metaphor. However, PbP systematizes through Saussurean diacritical theory in a way PoW does not (PoW is more literary; PbP is more linguistic-scientific). The two work the same problematic from different angles, and the combination (PoW + PbP, both 1950-54) is the middle term — not either alone.
  • The "missing middle term" framing depends on the existing wiki not adequately tracking PbP. Until this 2026-05-16 ingest, the wiki had no source page for PbP; the existing speaking-spoken-speech page traced PoP 1945 → PoW 1950-52 → Signs 1960 without a 1953-54 station. This claim creates the genealogical update; it does not merely report it.
  • The Kee 2025 reading already identifies PbP as the pivot point of MP's middle period — but Kee's framing is pivot (forward-looking toward V&I), not middle term (backward-looking from PoP). The two readings are complementary, not rival; this claim adds a backward-looking genealogical dimension to Kee's forward-looking pivot reading.

Payoff

If supportable, the claim closes a known gap in the wiki's MP genealogy. The 1953-55 transition zone is named by CLAUDE.md (General Rule 18, "MP's 1953–55 period") as the period where the genealogical middle-term check is most needed. PbP is the missing source for the parole parlante / parole parlée trajectory. The claim also strengthens the wiki's speaking-spoken-speech page (which now traces a complete 1945 → 1950-52 → 1953-54 → 1960 trajectory) and the indirect-language page (which can now anchor its 1960 doctrine in the 1953-54 empirical-systematic preparation). For Paper A, the claim positions PbP as the load-bearing source for any treatment of the parole parlante doctrine.

Status History

  • 2026-05-16 — created as candidate during the PbP ingest. 3-test gate evaluation pending: (1) Contestable: yes, the rival reading (PoW as middle term) is plausible. (2) Evidence anchored: yes, direct PbP-source anchors plus PoP, PoW, Signs cross-references. (3) Counterpressure: rival reading + framing-dependency caveat + Kee complementarity caveat recorded. Recommendation: promote to live after one ingest cycle observing how the claim withstands subsequent source additions.
  • 2026-05-16 — promoted candidate → live (audit 14 Phase 8 fourteenth run). claim-promotion-reviewer subagent verdict: 3-test PASS; Test 5 CONCERN — the headline-thesis singular ("PbP is the missing middle term") is weakened by the entry's own Counterpressure concession that PoW + PbP together (both 1950-54) is the more defensible middle-term framing. Held at live; future supported promotion conditional on adjudicating whether PoW + PbP-together (versus PbP alone) is the wiki's settled 1953-54 anchor on the parole parlante/parlée trajectory.
