Claim

The break in MP's political philosophy between Humanism and Terror (1947) and Adventures of the Dialectic (1955) is not over Marxism per se (MP retains the structural critique of capitalism), nor over phenomenology (which deepens rather than weakens), nor over disillusionment as biography. The break is over the evidential weight of historical contingency. In 1947 MP holds that the contingency of the future equally legitimates opposition and government, and that this licenses a "wait-and-see" attitude toward the USSR; the future will deliver its verdict on the Soviet wager. In 1955 (Adventures of the Dialectic) the same structural contingency is read as having already decisively shown — by the events of 1948–53 — that the wait was a false trust.
