The three-positions impasse on flesh resolves methodologically — verbal *Wesen* as access-mediator

ID: flesh-three-positions-resolves-methodologically Title: The three-positions impasse on flesh resolves methodologically — verbal Wesen as access-mediator Status: candidate Confidence: speculative Claim type: interpretive Created: 2026-06-27 Updated: 2026-07-27 Sources: alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible Wiki homes: flesh-as-element, wesen-verbal

Claim

The three-positions impasse on flesh (Barbaras's ontic/ontological/transcendental tripartition, McWeeny's feminist critique, Carbone's intermediary-element reading) resolves methodologically if verbal Wesen is recognized as the access-mediator — not a fourth position but the framework that determines which "mode" of flesh is in play. The existing typed connection wesen-verbal is the condition of intelligibility of flesh-as-element is redeployed as a resolution mechanism.

Evidence

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The resolution mechanism is asserted, not shown: the survivor's own falsification condition concedes it is untested — if applying the verbal-Wesen reading to each of the three positions yields the same rather than three differentiated results, the mechanism fails (Jurors G/E).
  • Kantian-transcendental-access transposition gap (Juror S): the resolution must do MP-internal, world-side, non-apodictic work; if it re-imposes a subject-side apodictic synthesis it reinstates the anthropologisme MP refuses, making it an inherited pre-resolution rather than an MP-internal one.
  • Paired with the HELD constitutive rival flesh-three-positions-constitutive-asymmetric-layering (HOLD-AS-SPECULATIVE same batch); this resolve-leg is the better-anchored of the pair.
  • C2 rival-reading refuter objection (consolidation 2026-07-27, wf_0c146f6b-f92): Rival-reading refusal (consolidation 2026-07-27, rival-reading lens): the resolution mechanism is substitutable, and two better-anchored rivals explain the same evidence. 1. The mechanism is not the one the evidence generated. The seam draft that produced this conjecture resolves the impasse by a different mechanism: "directionality of access — world-flesh is approachable only through the sentient-flesh's reversibility," with Carbone's Visibility as the unifying technical term (wiki/.speculative/runs/2026-05-25-v1-2-pilot/drafts/aporia.md line 25; evidence bullets lines 28–31). The word Wesen does not occur anywhere in that draft (grep: 0 occurrences). Verbal Wesen enters only at the narrowing stage (SPECULATIONS.md lines 871, 883, 886), where its sole support becomes the existence of a wiki typed connection, not a passage. All three Evidence bullets of claims#flesh-three-positions-resolves-methodologically (the §7 typed connection; Barbaras's tripartition; the "§8 open question") are satisfied equally by the draft's access-directionality mechanism, which is anchored in four passage-level bullets (V&I May 1960 note; Carbone Intro p. 1; Barbaras ch. 1 pp. 29–46; Saint Aubert Natu3 269/[37]) rather than one wiki artifact. A claim whose named mechanism is freely interchangeable with a better-anchored rival that the same evidence supports has not earned live; the entry's Counterpressure records only that the mechanism is untested, never that it is substitutable. 2. The wiki already resolves this impasse without verbal Wesen. wiki/concepts/flesh-as-element.md §"What the Concept Does" item 3 states that the three-modes structure, anchored in MP's own May 1960 working note ("the 3 phenomena are simultaneous"), "dissolves McWeeny-type pansensism ... and Barbaras-type fragmentation"; §"Flesh = Visibility (Carbone's Terminological Move)" point 3 independently rules out the McWeeny reading on Carbone's diacriticality argument. The deflationary rival is therefore live: the impasse (so far as it resolves at all) resolves textually, by MP's May-1960 simultaneity plus Carbone's diacritical Visibility, and verbal Wesen adds a label rather than a discriminating operation. If that rival holds, the entry's Payoff ("gains a principled, mechanism-named answer to its most prominent open question") is false as stated — the page already carries an answer to the same question, twice, from primary-text and secondary anchors. 3. The disagreement is first-order-ontological, not access-methodological. flesh-as-element.md §Positions closes: Barbaras and McWeeny are "complementary opposites... Both cite the same textual evidence in opposite directions," and the source page (wiki/sources/alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy.md Core Argument 3) records McWeeny's argument that a two-flesh structure "would require unexplained second-order mechanisms." That dispute is about whether the flesh of the world is sentient — a property of the object — not about which access-mode the reader occupies. A mediator that "determines which 'mode' of flesh is in play" cannot adjudicate it; McWeeny's charge is that the two-flesh structure is unstable whichever mode is in play. Counterpressure's Kantian-transposition bullet is adjacent but does not reach this: it worries about subject-side apodicticity, not about the category-mistake of recasting a first-order ontological dispute as an access-mediation problem. 4. The explanandum is partly a construct. The claim's three "positions" are stated as "Barbaras's ontic/ontological/transcendental tripartition, McWeeny's feminist critique, Carbone's intermediary-element reading." Two of the three are not the wiki's characterizations. (a) No artifact anywhere in the corpus characterizes McWeeny as a feminist critique: the source page (lines 44, 78, 98, 123) and the extraction note (lines 41, 79, 81) uniformly read ch. 6 as the panpsychism / pansensism argument; "feminist" survives only from the SPECULATIONS.md wording. (b) Carbone is not a third pole: on flesh-as-element.md he is not in §Positions at all (that section holds Barbaras, McWeeny, Derrida), and his Visibility move is deployed against McWeeny ("This rules out the pansensist reading (McWeeny 2019)"). The rival reading — there is a two-way Barbaras/McWeeny dispute with Carbone as one side's ally, not a three-cornered impasse — explains the same artifacts at least as well and dissolves the thing the claim claims to resolve. 5. The page's standing stance is non-adjudication, not an open gap. flesh-as-element.md §Positions directs the wiki to hold the positive and Derridean registers "in productive tension — neither subordinated to the other," and §Synthetic Claims closes that the Barbaras/McWeeny pair "form a within-volume disagreement on flesh-structure that this page must hold open without endorsing either reading" (cf. CLAUDE.md General Rule 11). Promoting a resolution to live licenses provisional citation of an adjudication the Wiki home explicitly declines to make. 6. Neither Wiki home asserts what the claim says. wiki/concepts/wesen-verbal.md contains zero mentions of Barbaras, McWeeny, Carbone, the three positions, or the impasse (grep: 0); its only bearing is the Connections bullet "is the condition of intelligibility of flesh-as-element", which asserts a condition of intelligibility for the concept of flesh, not a discriminator among rival readings of it. And the Evidence bullet citing "flesh-as-element §8 open question on the three positions" does not point at the page: the page's Open Questions section has no such item; "§8 #9" is a seed bullet in the speculate run baseline (wiki/.speculative/runs/2026-05-25-v1-2-pilot/baseline.md line 365), whose own wording — "the wiki preserves all three without final adjudication" — is a description of maintainer policy, not an attested aporia in the sources. Consequence: at least two live rivals (the draft's own access-directionality mechanism; the page's May-1960 + Carbone dissolution) explain the entry's evidence at least as well as verbal Wesen, and neither is addressed in Counterpressure. Entry stays at candidate until (i) the falsification condition is actually run — verbal Wesen applied to each of the three readings producing three differentiated results, not one — and (ii) the three positions are restated in the wiki's own attested terms (McWeeny = pansensism, not "feminist critique"; Carbone's status as a party to, not a pole of, the dispute).

Payoff

The flesh-as-element concept page gains a principled, mechanism-named answer to its most prominent open question, using apparatus (verbal Wesen as access-mediator) already present in the wiki's typed connections but never deployed as resolution.
