Claim
Chouraqui (Body and Embodiment 2021, ch. 10) coins reverse asceticism for capitalism's exploitation of the body-soul union: whereas traditional (religious) asceticism used body-discipline for spiritual liberation, capitalism uses body-discipline for spiritual alienation. This is the body-political extension of Marx's four alienations and gives Foucauldian bio-power a precise asceticism-historical lineage: bio-power is the secularized inversion of religious asceticism.
