Ahmed 2019 — extension of MP's *habitual body* to institutions (whiteness as institutional habit)

ID: whiteness-as-institutional-habit Title: Ahmed 2019 — extension of MP's habitual body to institutions (whiteness as institutional habit) Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: structural-parallel Created: 2026-05-09 Updated: 2026-05-09 Sources: alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy, merleau-ponty-1945-phenomenology-of-perception Wiki homes: institution, habitual-body, politics-mp

Claim

Ahmed (Contemporary Philosophy 2019, ch. 10) extends MP's habitual body to institutions themselves: institutions become habits, acquiring the shape of the bodies that tend to inhabit them; bodies that "fit" don't feel the institution's stress, while those that don't encounter "brick walls" invisible to those who fit. Whiteness is the paradigm institutional habit, not a property of bodies. The extension makes the habitual-body concept political without abandoning its phenomenological grounding.

Evidence

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The analogy from individual habitual body to institutional body is structural and may overgeneralize — institutions are not simply bodies-writ-large; the wiki's existing institution page tracks Stiftung primarily through 1954–55 course, and absorbing Ahmed's reading risks flattening the distinction between institution-as-Stiftung and institution-as-organization.
  • Competing reading: Foucault-style power-as-discourse reading of institutional whiteness (which Ahmed engages but does not concede).
  • Wiki-internal: the existing institution HUB page is already in the seventh-run Step 8.5 queue per AUDIT_PLAN; absorbing Ahmed's extension cleanly requires the queue's pending upgrade to land first.

Payoff

The claim adds a political-extension dimension to habitual-body and institution that the wiki had not articulated. It anchors the institutional-habit reading on a single contestable thesis from a major secondary source. For the politics-mp (recent stub from tenth run) and the institution HUB page, this Position connects MP's individual phenomenology to contemporary institutional analysis. For the Chouraqui-homology family, this is a non-Chouraqui-source cross-corroboration of the recognition-and-institution operator.

Status History

  • 2026-05-09 — created as live (Phase 8 thirteenth run, Layer 2 backfill harvest under user pre-authorization). 3-test gate passes: contestable (the institution-vs-organization distinction is the rival; Foucault-style power-as-discourse is the second-order rival); evidence anchored at ch. 10 + PhP habitual-body passages; counterpressure on overgeneralization + Foucault rival + wiki-infrastructure-needed recorded. Promoted under user pre-authorization.
