Ahmed 2019 — extension of MP's *habitual body* to institutions (whiteness as institutional habit)
ID: whiteness-as-institutional-habit Title: Ahmed 2019 — extension of MP's habitual body to institutions (whiteness as institutional habit) Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: structural-parallel Created: 2026-05-09 Updated: 2026-07-28 Sources: alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy, merleau-ponty-1945-phenomenology-of-perception Wiki homes: institution, habitual-body, politics-mp
Claim
Ahmed (Contemporary Philosophy 2019, ch. 10) extends MP's habitual body to institutions — in her own stipulated sense: "what we commonly call (social) institutions" (raw 2573), not Stiftung-wide. Institutions become habits, acquiring the shape of the bodies that tend to inhabit them; bodies that "fit" don't feel the institution's stress, while those that don't encounter "brick walls" invisible to those who fit. Whiteness is the paradigm institutional habit — on Ahmed's own hedged wording "not only a phenomenon of habituation (how an individual body repeats actions and catches their significance) but also a means of creating an institutional space in which some bodies more than others can 'fit'" (raw 2633). The extension makes the habitual-body concept political without abandoning its phenomenological grounding. (Corrected 2026-07-28: the Claim previously read "institutions themselves" without Ahmed's stipulated narrowing, and "not a property of bodies" — an exclusive negation that over-read her both/and; her chapter closes in an irreducibly bodily register.)
Evidence
- alloa-chouraqui-kaushik-2019-contemporary-philosophy ch. 10 (Ahmed), pp. 197–219 (TOC p. 197; Johnson begins p. 221). Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a argument #10 + Part D candidate #2; raw-verified at
raw/Merleau-Ponty and Contemporary Philosophy.md2577 ("institutions become habits"), 2623 ("they tend toward the bodies that tend to inhabit them"), 2633, 2653/2659 (brick walls; "not revealed unless you come up against them"). (Corrected 2026-07-28 from "pp. 209–231": raw{N}markers read as printed folios — this volume runs {N} = printed + 12; the old range straddled into Johnson's chapter.) - merleau-ponty-1945-phenomenology-of-perception — the habitual-body / present-body two-layer formulation, phantom-limb chapter (raw ~1975 region), plus the habit Key Passages (Part One Ch III.l p. 139 "body inhabits space"; Ch III.m p. 145 "dilating our being in the world"). The "trails behind" comet passage Ahmed quotes (PhP Landes p. 102; her PP 115, n. 8) sits locally in the body-schema / situational-spatiality discussion — the identification of postural body with habitual body is Ahmed's interpretive move ("The postural body for Merleau-Ponty is the habitual body," raw 2593), not an MP-side datum. (Rewritten 2026-07-28: the bullet previously cited bare "PhP 'habitual body' passages" with no locator, attributing Ahmed's gloss to PhP.)
- Register coordination note, not an independent anchor (relabelled 2026-07-28; same volume, adjacent chapter): Chouraqui's ch. 9 (perceptual faith and tacit power converging on similar structural logic; cf. companion live claims#being-is-power-chouraqui-perceptual-faith-shared-structure). Does not count toward multi-source support.
Counterpressure / Limits
- The analogy from individual habitual body to institutional body is structural and may overgeneralize — institutions are not simply bodies-writ-large; the wiki's existing institution page tracks Stiftung primarily through 1954–55 course, and absorbing Ahmed's reading risks flattening the distinction between institution-as-Stiftung and institution-as-organization. (Partly pre-empted by Ahmed herself — her raw-2573 stipulation is a narrowing, not a conflation; noted 2026-07-28.)
- Competing reading: Foucault-style power-as-discourse reading of institutional whiteness — the wiki's own rival, not Ahmed's engagement. (Corrected 2026-07-28: the bullet previously said Ahmed "engages but does not concede" Foucault; Foucault appears nowhere in ch. 10 — the volume's Foucault engagements belong to Flynn ch. 8 and Chouraqui ch. 9, main-thread grep-verified.)
- MP's own texts resist the identification the claim's title performs (added 2026-07-28): the I&P Course Summary treats "the feeling is an illusion and the institution a habit" as explicitly a first approximation the analysis then overturns ("However, once it has been recognized that pure love is impossible…," raw I&P line 1564), and the entry's own home institution holds "Institution is not habit or acquired skill … habit preserves, institution invites a sequel" at
confidence: high(stiftung repeats it). The available defence — Ahmed extends PhP's habitual body under her stipulated organizational sense of institution, so she is not claiming Stiftung is habit — costs the claim its institution home in the strong sense. - Prior-literature deflation (added 2026-07-28): Ahmed's own n. 23 (raw 2779) cites Sullivan, Revealing Whiteness (2006) and MacMullan, Habits of Whiteness (2009) — whiteness-as-habit is pre-existing pragmatist literature; and the chapter's institutional-scaling mechanism is argued from William James via Gail Weiss and Dumont's garment analogy (raw 2615–2623: "institutions come to have their own tendencies: they tend toward the bodies that tend to inhabit them"), with Douglas and the "new institutionalism" (Nee) supplying the institutional frame. The rival: a pragmatist/sociological account illustrated with MP, in which the MP grounding does no load-bearing work.
- Wiki-internal: the institution HUB-page upgrade this bullet previously conditioned on (via the since-deleted AUDIT_PLAN's seventh-run Step 8.5 queue) has landed — the page is now
confidence: high, thesis-central, updated 2026-07-27, and carries the Ahmed extension in its Positions. Precondition discharged; recorded 2026-07-28. - C3 refuter objection (evidence-chain lens, consolidation 2026-07-28 run 7): live→supported blocked — two of three Evidence bullets failed Test 2 as written; the Ahmed-side bullet alone carried the claim. (1) The PhP bullet had no anchor and misattributed the passage it names: the comet's-tail sentence sits inside PhP's second definition of the body schema — situational spatiality, not habit; "habitual" does not occur in that paragraph, and the wiki itself differentiates habitual-body from body-schema. The Rule-18 local-context check fails for habitual-body purposes. (2) The identification is Ahmed's own gloss ("The postural body for Merleau-Ponty is the habitual body," raw 2593), so the bullet was circular — citing the contested interpretive step as its own warrant; and the institutions-acquire-body-shape mechanism is sourced by Ahmed to James/Dumont (raw 2615–2623), not MP. (3) The Chouraqui bullet anchored nothing, was not cross-source (same volume), and leaned on a provisional live companion. (4) The Counterpressure's AUDIT_PLAN precondition was unverifiable (file deleted at v0d.25). A supported promotion requires the MP-side bullet re-anchored to an actual corps habituel passage with location, and the entry to state that postural=habitual is Ahmed's move. [All four repaired in this same run; see Status History.]
- C3 refuter objection (rival-reading lens, consolidation 2026-07-28 run 7): live→supported blocked — three rivals survived the entry as written. (1) Co-constitution, not relocation: "not a property of bodies" was an exclusive negation Ahmed's own grounding passage contradicts — "not only a phenomenon of habituation … but also a means of creating an institutional space" (raw 2633); whiteness is explained by bodily proximity ("white bodies gather and create the impression of coherence," raw 2629) and the chapter closes bodily ("To inhabit whiteness as a nonwhite body can be uncomfortable … you feel the stress of an encounter," raw 2691). The two homes did not even agree on the wording (habitual-body reproduced the exclusion verbatim; institution silently dropped it). (2) The institution-scaling step is Jamesian, not Merleau-Pontian: the signature formula derives from James-via-Weiss and Dumont's garment/lock analogies, with Nee's new institutionalism and Douglas supplying the institutional frame; MP furnishes the sub-institutional half (comet, stick, "I can"). The live rival — a convergence in which MP supplies vocabulary and James/new-institutionalism the scaling mechanism — was nowhere considered (none of James/Weiss/Dumont/Douglas/Nee appeared in the entry or its extraction-note anchor). (3) Deflationary reading of "without abandoning its phenomenological grounding": the institutional half is evidentially grounded in Ahmed's On Being Included interview data (institutional ethnography); Ahmed attributes the "practical phenomenology" to her informants and marks her own move as "both continuing and changing the terms I have inherited from him" (raw 2575). [Rivals (1)'s wording defect was repaired (the Claim now carries Ahmed's both/and); rivals (2) and (3) are now recorded as Counterpressure and remain the open would-promote conditions.]
- C3 refuter objection (scope lens, consolidation 2026-07-28 run 7): live→supported blocked — four scope defects. (a) Flat where Ahmed is explicitly both/and (the exclusive "not a property of bodies"). (b) "Institutions themselves" papered over a narrowing Ahmed herself states ("what we commonly call (social) institutions," raw 2573), while the institution home's Positions list absorbs the extension into the Stiftung-wide register — the claim was true only under a narrowing the entry did not state. (c) Over-attribution of the operative mechanism to the MP extension (the James/Weiss/Dumont leg, unrecorded in entry and extraction note alike). (d) The anchor page range was a raw-marker/printed-folio conflation ({N} = printed + 12; the cited range overlapped the ch. 9 range the entry's own third bullet cross-references). [(a), (b), (d) repaired in this same run; (c) recorded as Counterpressure.]
Payoff
The claim adds a political-extension dimension to habitual-body and institution that the wiki had not articulated. It anchors the institutional-habit reading on a single contestable thesis from a major secondary source. For the politics-mp (recent stub from tenth run) and the institution HUB page, this Position connects MP's individual phenomenology to contemporary institutional analysis. For the Chouraqui-homology family, this is a non-Chouraqui-source cross-corroboration of the recognition-and-institution operator. Sharper payoff articulated at the 2026-07-28 jury: a negative-method isomorphism — PhP makes the habitual body visible only through breakdown (phantom limb, Schneider); Ahmed makes institutional habit visible only through non-fit ("the habits of the institutions are not revealed unless you come up against them," raw 2659) — so the method transfers with the concept, and "institutional habit" inherits MP's diagnostic limitation: the institution cannot be described from inside the fit.
Status History
- 2026-05-09 — created as
live(Phase 8 thirteenth run, Layer 2 backfill harvest under user pre-authorization). 3-test gate passes: contestable (the institution-vs-organization distinction is the rival; Foucault-style power-as-discourse is the second-order rival); evidence anchored at ch. 10 + PhP habitual-body passages; counterpressure on overgeneralization + Foucault rival + wiki-infrastructure-needed recorded. Promoted under user pre-authorization. - 2026-05-09 — status: created as live; (lifecycle backfill 2026-07-11)
- 2026-07-28 — C3 supported-jury blocked (verifier 2 PASS / 1 UNCERTAIN — the UNCERTAIN the +12 raw-marker locator; 5-test REQUEST-REVISION with CONCERNS on tests 1/2/3/4/5; refuters 3× REFUTED — evidence-chain / rival-reading / scope), status stays live at
medium; consolidation run 7, wf_4199fe6a-fa7. The +12 marker/folio oracle forraw/Merleau-Ponty and Contemporary Philosophy.mdwas independently confirmed by this jury (Ahmed TOC p. 197 vs{209}chapter marker) — triple-confirmed with the museum-stiftung jury's TOC adjudication this same run; the volume-wide extraction-note sweep is routed to the next audit Citations phase. Repairs applied in-run, each seat-named and main-thread-verified: Evidence bullet 1's range 209–231 → 197–219 with raw anchors added; the PhP bullet rewritten with real locators (phantom-limb two-layer region; Ch III.l p. 139 / Ch III.m p. 145 Key Passages) and the postural=habitual identification attributed to Ahmed (raw 2593) with the comet passage's body-schema local context flagged; the Chouraqui bullet relabelled a register coordination note (same volume — does not count toward multi-source support); the Claim's "institutions themselves" given Ahmed's own raw-2573 stipulation and "not a property of bodies" corrected to her raw-2633 both/and; the false Foucault-engagement parenthetical struck (Foucault occurs nowhere in ch. 10 — main-thread grep, lines 2563–2795); the MP-side institution-is-not-habit counterpressure added (I&P raw 1564 first-approximation-then-overturn; institution Key Point 5) with its available defence; the Sullivan/MacMullan prior-literature + James/Weiss/Dumont mechanism counterpressure added; the stale AUDIT_PLAN precondition replaced with its recorded discharge (institution now high/thesis-central, 2026-07-27); the negative-method-isomorphism payoff added. Would promote: answer the Jamesian-mechanism rival and the deflationary illustrated-with-MP rival (now in Counterpressure); promote the synthetic thesis (scale-invariant negative method) into the Claim body so the contestable content is not one trailing clause; note the evidentiary base remains one 23-page chapter plus MP-side anchors.
