The 1946 *pente de l'histoire / reprise / logique de fait* matrix is the political-register ancestor of MP's 1954–55 *institution* concept

Claim
The matrix MP articulates in his 1946 Brussels conference L'individu et l'histoire (14 March 1946; Inédits I p. 195) — slope-of-history + reprise of the past + projet of the future + factual-logic + cantilevered-self (porte-à-faux) — has the same structural profile as the 1954–55 institution matrix developed eight years later in MP's Collège de France course. The 1946 matrix is in political-historical register; the 1954–55 course in ontological register. The structural parallel suggests either (i) the institution concept is a re-deployment of the 1946 matrix in ontological vocabulary (genealogical claim), or (ii) the same problem-space recurs under different vocabularies (structural-parallel claim). The Inédits I (Mimésis 2022) make this question newly available since the 1946 matrix was previously inaccessible.
Evidence
Anchored in the extraction note at this source's merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-i-1946-1947 argument #4 + Pass 2c quote-anchors.
- merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity — the 1954–55 course establishes the institution-concept as "the consequence and the guarantee of our belonging to a common world... existing between others and myself, between me and myself, like a hinge" (Course Summary p. 114). The structural elements are: (i) the past opens a future; (ii) the subject is between (not constituting), (iii) the matrix is one not several layers (cf. the 1946 "non tour à tour mais en même temps" of homme-en-porte-a-faux p. 213).
- merleau-ponty-1955-adventures-of-the-dialectic — AD's slogan "revolutions are true as movements and false as regimes" (p. 207) and the figure of action-of-unveiling-vs-action-of-governing (Ch 5) are the intermediate version of the 1946 matrix in the 1955 political register — between the 1946 articulation and the 1954–55 ontological deployment.
- Glossary entry "Logique de l'histoire" (Inédits I p. 474, Dalissier-defined): MP's 1946 working definition of the matrix.
Counterpressure / Limits
The strongest objection: structural parallel in philosophical vocabulary is cheap; many concept-pairs across MP's corpus exhibit "the same general structure" without genealogy. The institution course is explicitly Husserlian (Urstiftung / Nachstiftung / Endstiftung); the 1946 vocabulary is explicitly Marxist-Hegelian. The Husserlian Stiftung genealogy may be independent of the 1946 political matrix; the structural similarity may be coincidental.
A second objection: the 1946 matrix is political-philosophical and the 1954–55 matrix is ontological-anthropological. Even if the structural elements match, the register differs enough that calling the second a "redeployment" of the first is premature without a demonstrated MP-text where the bridge is explicit. The 2022 Mimésis edition does not contain such a bridge text; the bridge — if it exists — would be in In. II (Mexico-NewYork conferences 1949) or in MP's correspondence.
A third objection: the 1946 matrix lacks the institution-specific element of symbolic matrices (1954–55 course; cf. claims#ineinander-universalizes-institution). If symbolic matrices are essential to institution but absent in 1946, then institution is not just the redeployment of the 1946 matrix.
Payoff
If the claim is correct, then (i) MP's institution concept is anchored in his political philosophy of 1946–47, not just in Husserl; (ii) HT (1947), AD (1955), and the institution course (1954–55) are one philosophical project under three vocabularies; (iii) the 1953 political rupture with Sartre is philosophically prepared by the 1946 matrix (since Sartre rejected the pente de l'histoire directly: Inédits I p. 211 — "passé social toujours en sursis. Faux si négation de pente"); (iv) reading the institution course requires reading the 1946 conference notes — they are not simply early MP but the political-register condition of the late ontological vocabulary.
If the claim is mistaken, then we have a structural parallel without genealogy — which is itself worth recording on institution and pente-de-l-histoire but does not authorize claims about MP's intellectual development.

candidatefrom the merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-i-1946-1947 ingest. Promotion toliverequires a targeted re-reading of the institution course's opening paragraphs against the 1946 L'individu et l'histoire text, demonstrating either a textual bridge (preserve as live) or an unbridgeable gap (downgrade or retire). Could also be promoted via Sallis 2025 or Saint Aubert 2024 if either secondary source draws the parallel explicitly. - 2026-05-04 (Phase 8 run, later same day) — promoted to
livefollowing the merleau-ponty-2022-inedits-ii-1947-1949 ingest, which adds the PPH (1947–48) intermediate-register attestation per claims#pph-as-direct-predecessor-of-institution-1955. The 3-test gate passes as a structural-parallel-with-genealogical-suggestion claim — not as a settled-genealogy claim. (1) Contestable against the Husserlian-Stiftung-only genealogy of institution; (2) anchored in Inédits I L'individu et l'histoire p. 195 + I&P Course Summary p. 114 + AD's "movements vs regimes" (p. 207); (3) Counterpressure documents the structural-parallel-vs-genealogy disambiguation, the political-vs-ontological register difference, the symbolic-matrices missing-element issue, and the 1950–53 philological gap that no currentraw/source bridges. The promotion treats the claim as a live structural parallel with strong genealogical motivation rather than a settled derivation; the latter would require either Sallis 2025 / Saint Aubert 2024 ingest, or a documented MP text where the 1946 → 1954–55 bridge is explicit. Confidence staysmedium: the 1946 → 1947–48 PPH → 1954–55 institution chain is now traceable through three intermediate-register attestations, but the terminological shift moment (when individu de classe becomes institution) is in the 1950–53 gap that the wiki cannot bridge from current sources.
