Claim

Kaushik (Contemporary Philosophy 2019, ch. 12) argues the museum is in crisis because it ignores the ambiguity of expression; MP's Stiftung as "power to forget origins" structurally undercuts both Hegel's historical teleology and Malraux's ahistorical subjectivity. Kaushik's own formula for the dilemma: "We have either history in Hegel's sense or the ahistorical in Malraux's sense of subjectivity and radical creativity" (raw 3315, printed p. 268). (The two specifying glosses this entry previously carried in parentheses — "museum as reconciliation of all styles" for Hegel, "museum without walls as triumph of creation" for Malraux — are the wiki's schematizations, not ch. 12's wording: neither phrase occurs in the chapter, "triumph of creation" occurs nowhere in the volume, and MP's own Signs assigns reconciliation-in-the-museum to Malraux (raw Signs 886). The two horns are simultaneously refused by the same Stiftung-structure: Stiftung is neither teleological-progressive (Hegel) nor unconditioned-creative (Malraux), but the power-to-forget that opens new beginnings without erasing what is forgotten.

Counterpressure / Limits

  • Kaushik's ch. 12 cites no Hegel text whatsoever — its 32 endnotes carry no Phenomenology, no Aesthetics (the notes' only "Aesthetics" is Bourriaud's Relational Aesthetics, n. 29); his Hegel is three unlocated glosses ("history in Hegel's sense," raw 3315; "a phase in 'immediacy,'" 3321; "if art for Hegel only ever functions to overcome itself," 3397). The Hegel horn rests on uncited prose — the rejection may be too fast. (Corrected 2026-07-28: this bullet previously implied careful Phenomenology engagement contrasted with the aesthetic Lectures; the true premise is stronger — no Hegel citation at all.)
  • Competing reading, corrected: Kaushik criticizes Bishop's Radical Museology — "she provides no framework to account for its dialectical nature" (raw 3387) — and lists Bishop first among the positions institution "counters," claiming institution "alone gives us the ontology adequate to the demands of a properly radical museology" (raw 3397). The live objection is whether institution can actually do the curatorial work Kaushik says it alone can. (This bullet previously asserted Bishop was "endorsed somewhat uncritically" — inverted against the chapter; the error traces to the extraction note's compression of argument #12's Because-leg (line 28), a Rule-18 artifact-inadequacy routed to the next audit Citations phase.)
  • Wiki-internal: the existing live claims#malraux-metamorphosis-precedes-mp-advent already locates Malraux as predecessor — Kaushik's structural rejection-of-both is a finer-grained claim that complements rather than supersedes the existing one. (Flagged 2026-07-28: the 2026-07-21 refuter panel on the sibling entry named this bullet as disposal-by-assertion; reconciling "undercuts / ahistorical" with "predecessor of advent / not competing" is an open task — see Status History would-promote conditions.   • C3 refuter objection (evidence-chain lens, consolidation 2026-07-28 run 7): live→supported blocked. A targeted raw check of the cited chapter (Rule 18) disconfirmed one recorded counterpressure bullet outright and showed the Kaushik-side characterization rests on a single unquoted paraphrase. (1) Counterpressure's Bishop bullet was false about the anchor — Kaushik criticizes Bishop (raw 3387, 3391) and his summative sentence is "institution in fact counters the positions of Bishop, Bourriaud, Malraux, and, above all, Hegel" (raw 3397); the error is inherited from the extraction note's Pass 2a Because-leg (line 28). A Counterpressure record that misdescribes the source cannot carry Test 5: the restatement was run against a rival the chapter does not hold. (2) The "two horns" framing is the extraction note's schematization, not Kaushik's: his enumeration of what institution counters is four-membered (Bishop, Bourriaud, Malraux, "and, above all, Hegel"), and his Hegel relation is explicitly dismantle-from-within — "Merleau-Ponty's project … may be linked to Hegel while also complicating Hegelian critique … eminently dialectical" (raw 3315) — which the flat "undercuts" suppresses. (3) The two parenthetical specifications were unanchored importations: "museum as reconciliation of all styles" appears nowhere in ch. 12 (the chapter's only reconcil- tokens are "speculative reconciliation," 3323, and MP's own claim that the historicity of life "reconciles paintings," 3363 — the register borrowed the source's positive term and reassigned it to the rejected one), and "museum without walls as triumph of creation" occurs nowhere in the chapter ("Museum without Walls" appears only in the editors' Introduction; "triumph of creation" nowhere in the volume). (4) Evidence bullet 1's two named anchors were one anchor (Part D candidate #5 restates Pass 2a #12), and it quotes no Kaushik — both Pass-2c passages designated "Anchors argument #12" are MP Signs passages quoted through Kaushik. What survives the check: the Signs bullets verify cleanly (raw Signs = printed folio + 25; line 874 = p. 59, lines 902/908 = pp. 62/63, matching Kaushik's nn. 3/14/15), and the core double-rejection is genuinely in the chapter (raw 3299, 3313). The claim's right to exist at live is not contested — what failed is the evidence record's fitness for supported.   • C3 refuter objection (rival-reading lens, consolidation 2026-07-28 run 7): live→supported blocked — undefeated rival: Kaushik's chapter is not a symmetric double rejection but an asymmetric, immanently-Hegelian argument in which Malraux's notion of style is adopted-and-recalibrated as the instrument, Hegel is the target "above all," and MP's project is "eminently dialectical" and "linked to Hegel." Four contradicting points from the cited chapter: (1) Malraux is a resource, not a horn — "Another fundamental motive for Merleau-Ponty to adopt and recalibrate Malraux's notion of style here is thus also to avoid 'the historical' in Hegel's sense" (raw 3291): adopting-and-recalibrating one position to avoid another is an asymmetry, not a simultaneous refusal of two. (2) The shared diagnosis is ground-blindness, not falsity — both positions are "parasitic on and ignorant of precisely this primal-institution" (raw 3299), a dependence relation under Husserl's forgetting-of-grounds "crisis" structure: Stiftung grounds what each gets partly right, which is not "structurally undercuts." (3) Kaushik's own move is to critique the structure of the dilemma from inside Hegel (raw 3315), declining the neither/nor third-position construal the claim adopts. (4) The chapter's summary verdict is a ranked four-way counter (raw 3397), not a two-horn symmetry. The MP-side anchors reinforce the rival: MP assigns the Hegelian teleology to Malraux's own apparatus — "These Hegelian monstrosities are the antithesis and complement of Malraux's individualism" (raw Signs 928, p. 65) — and where MP addresses Hegel in propria persona ("Hegel is the Museum," Signs p. 81, raw Signs 1084) the verdict is a conditional endorsement ("he is right; but on condition that…"), with the volume's Introduction defending Hegel against precisely the teleological reading the claim attributes to him (Signs pp. 30–31). Read together, the same evidence is explained at least as well by: Stiftung is a conditioned, de-teleologized Hegelianism (retrospective intelligibility kept, closure refused) deployed against Malraux's individualism together with the Spirit-of-Painting that individualism generates — a single composite target approached from within the dialectic. The register's own Malraux cluster instantiates "adopt and recalibrate," not "undercuts" (claims#malraux-metamorphosis-precedes-mp-advent live; claims#malraux-schema-precedes-mp-coherent-deformation-philological-refinement supported). What would answer the objection: sentence-level Kaushik anchors showing a symmetric refusal, plus a stated reason why "adopt and recalibrate," "parasitic on," "linked to Hegel … from within," and "above all, Hegel" are compatible with "the two horns are simultaneously refused by the same Stiftung-structure" — or a rewording to the asymmetric reading those lines support.
  • C3 refuter objection (scope lens, consolidation 2026-07-28 run 7): live→supported blocked. The entry was wider than its evidence in three places, and its one page locator was wrong. (1) Locator defect: "pp. 265–278" began twelve pages inside the chapter and overran ten pages into Carbone's essay — the volume TOC puts Kaushik at pp. 253–268; the defect is inherited from the extraction note, whose whole Pass 2a location column reads raw {N} markers as printed folios at a uniform +12 (Alloa 61→"73–94," Watson 83→"95–119," Benoist 111→"123–133," Ahmed 197→"209–231," Johnson 221→"233–265," Kaushik 253→"265–278," Carbone 269→"281–291," Fóti 281→"293–308," Nancy 297→"309–315"). (2) The Malraux horn was stated flat where the wiki's own homes state it narrowed: ch. 12 mentions Malraux in four sentences and cites no Malraux text; andre-malraux Key Points holds MP's correction is "directed at one register of Malraux, not at the book's overall thesis"; museum-without-walls makes the musée imaginaire the condition under which cross-temporal metamorphosis becomes visible — the opposite of "ahistorical"; and the entry's Sources omit malraux-1953-voices-of-silence though it was ingested eleven days before the claim's creation. The claim is true only under a narrowing (Malraux qua Kaushik's schematic pole, the individualism register) the entry did not state. (3) The Hegel horn was likewise flat against a register that holds the distinction at higher status: the supported claims#hegel-1807-vs-1831-self-correction-abstract-absolute carries the two-Hegels distinction, and the claim's own second source records "Hegel, properly read, is NOT the thinker of destructive totalization" (Signs extraction note, argument #6, Signs pp. 71–76). The source's rejection is register-specific; the claim's was not. (4) The Bishop counterpressure bullet asserted the opposite of the source, so Test 5 had not actually been run. Payoff

The claim adds a structural double-rejection reading (Hegel + Malraux) that the wiki's existing Malraux-MP track had not articulated. It supplies stiftung and institution with a museum-extension Position that connects to the claims#malraux-metamorphosis-precedes-mp-advent existing line. For Paper A and any future ingest of malraux-1953-voices-of-silence follow-up material, this Position is the wiki-side anchor.
