Malraux's *metamorphosis* (1951) is the empirical-historical predecessor of MP's *advent*; the wiki's two-historicities page should anchor advent to Malraux as well as to Ricoeur

ID: malraux-metamorphosis-precedes-mp-advent Title: Malraux's metamorphosis (1951) is the empirical-historical predecessor of MP's advent; the wiki's two-historicities page should anchor advent to Malraux as well as to Ricoeur Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: genealogical Created: 2026-04-28 Updated: 2026-04-28 Sources: malraux-1953-voices-of-silence, merleau-ponty-1964-signs Wiki homes: two-historicities, metamorphosis-art, andre-malraux

Claim

MP's "advent vs. event" distinction (Signs 1952; 1954–55 Institution course; Ricoeur footnote at Signs p. 68) is the philosophical reformulation of Malraux's prior empirical-historical thesis that metamorphosis is a law governing the life of every work of art (*Voices of Silence* p. 72). The wiki has historically sourced advent to Ricoeur (footnote 26) and to MP's 1954–55 Institution course; the Malraux prior anchor is the empirical-historical content the philosophical framework articulates. Malraux states the law of art's life; MP generalizes it across domains via the advent concept.

Evidence

  • malraux-1953-voices-of-silence Voices of Silence p. 72: "Metamorphosis is not a matter of chance; it is a law governing the life of every work of art" — cardinal locution. Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2c, the cross-temporal cardinal-locution evidence.
  • malraux-1953-voices-of-silence Voices of Silence p. 73: "What the masterpiece keeps up is not a monologue, however authoritative, but a dialogue indefeasible by Time." The dialogue-mode is the same temporal structure MP's advent picks out (a productive past calling forward an indefinite future of recreation). Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2c.
  • merleau-ponty-1964-signs Signs p. 66 (the cardinal absorption-passage): "The first sketches on the walls of caves set forth the world as 'to be painted' or 'to be sketched' and called for an indefinite future of painting, so that they speak to us and we answer them by metamorphoses in which they collaborate with us." MP uses metamorphoses verbatim from Malraux; the surrounding pages cite Malraux extensively. The advent-vs-event distinction follows two pages later (pp. 65–67).
  • The wiki's existing two-historicities page documents the Ricoeur footnote (p. 68 fn 26) and the 1954–55 Institution course as the philosophical anchors; the Malraux ingest adds the prior empirical-historical anchor that Ricoeur's footnote does not name.

Counterpressure / Limits

The genealogical claim does not assert identity between metamorphosis and advent. Three structural distinctions:

  1. Scope: Malraux's metamorphosis is a law of art's life (cross-temporal mode in art-history); MP's advent is a generalized historicity (extending across art, philosophy, politics, intersubjectivity). MP's generalization is the philosophical work added; Malraux does not theorize the structure outside art.
  2. Relation to institution: MP's advent is bound to institution (the matrix-event that opens a field). Malraux's metamorphosis has no concept of institution; the productive present selects the past, but Malraux does not theorize the productive present as itself an instituting act.
  3. The Ricoeur attribution: MP names Ricoeur, not Malraux, at the Signs p. 68 footnote. The footnote is MP's philosophical citation; the Malraux anchor is the empirical-historical content. Both are real; the genealogical claim adds the latter without erasing the former.

The single-secondary-source caveat: the claim is grounded in MP's 1952 essay (Signs) plus Malraux's 1951 book. No third-party secondary source on the wiki currently traces this genealogy in the form articulated here. Promotion to supported would require either (a) a third-party Malraux-MP scholar making the genealogical claim explicitly, or (b) MP's 1954–55 course attesting to a Malraux metamorphosis-derivation of the advent vocabulary (the course is on the wiki at merleau-ponty-2010-institution-and-passivity; spot-check did not surface explicit Malraux derivation but a more thorough re-read might).

Payoff

Two consequences:

  1. The wiki's two-historicities page becomes more genealogically complete. Advent is both Ricoeur-anchored (philosophical framework) and Malraux-anchored (empirical-historical content). The dual anchoring matches MP's actual practice in the Signs essay, where the cardinal absorption-passage at p. 66 uses Malraux's vocabulary verbatim and the Ricoeur footnote at p. 68 supplies the philosophical frame.

  2. The wiki's reading of MP's late ontology gains a structural-historical bridge to art-philosophy. MP's late privileging of art (science-secrete, fundamental-thought-in-art, making-visible, coherent-deformation) is more legible against the Malraux background — the cumulative-temporal mode is first a law of art's life, then a general philosophical structure MP extends across domains. This makes the late ontology's privileging of art structurally motivated rather than incidental.

Status History

  • 2026-04-28 — created as live. The 3-test gate passes: (1) the genealogical thesis is contestable (against the Ricoeur-only attribution and the no-genealogy view that MP and Malraux independently articulate cognate concepts); (2) each evidence bullet anchors to Malraux Voices p. 72/73 + MP Signs p. 66, with extraction-note Pass 2c attestations; (3) Counterpressure documents three structural distinctions plus the single-secondary-source caveat. Promotion proceeds without explicit user confirmation per CLAUDE.md.
