Carbone's archival argument that MP corrects "Circularity, and precession" to "Circularity, *but rather* precession" in the *Grand Résumé* of *V&I* (Fall 1960)

ID: mp-precession-supplants-circularity-1960 Title: Carbone's archival argument that MP corrects "Circularity, and precession" to "Circularity, but rather precession" in the Grand Résumé of V&I (Fall 1960) Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: philological Created: 2026-05-09 Updated: 2026-05-09 Sources: carbone-2019-philosophy-screens, merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible, merleau-ponty-1961-eye-and-mind Wiki homes: precession, chiasm, visible-invisible

Claim

Carbone (Philosophy-Screens ch. 2 pp. 41–48, esp. 44–46) shows from the Grand Résumé of V&I (Fall 1960) that MP corrects "Circularity, and precession" to "Circularity, but rather precession" — and that precession in unpublished manuscript marginalia replaces the spatial figures enjambement / empiétement with a temporal figure of mutual anticipation. This is not a synonymous substitution: precession names a mutual temporal antecedence whose primacy is undecidable (neither gaze nor things, neither imaginary nor actual, comes "first"), dissolving the cleavage of real/imaginary. The vision-precession track is distinct from the earth-precession track in Chouraqui's reading, and the precession concept page must hold both.

Evidence

  • carbone-2019-philosophy-screens ch. 2 pp. 41–48 (esp. 44–46). Anchor: extraction-note Pass 2a + Part D candidate #1.
  • merleau-ponty-1961-eye-and-mind passage: "the precession of what is upon what one sees and makes seen, of what one sees and makes seen upon what is — this is vision itself" — the published anchor for the precession-as-mutual-antecedence reading.
  • The Grand Résumé (Nov 1960) revision quoted at Carbone ch. 2 p. 45 ("Circularity, but rather precession | visible–seer / silence–speech / I–Other") — in unpublished manuscript marginalia per de Saint Aubert's inventory; published merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible working notes contain the November 1960 Time and chiasm note in adjacent territory (verified verbatim: "Stiftung of a point of time can be transmitted to the others without 'continuity' without 'conservation,' without fictitious 'support' in the psyche the moment that one understands time as chiasm").
  • de Saint Aubert's inventory of unpublished manuscript occurrences (acknowledged by Carbone).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The existing wiki concept page precession currently foregrounds Chouraqui's earth-as-Boden reading (principle of anteriority); the philological correction Carbone makes is vision-precession, not earth-precession, so the wiki must track both as distinct readings of the same MP motif rather than collapsing them.
  • Targeted raw-source check #2 partial: the textual evidence for the strict revision rests on de Saint Aubert's manuscript inventory — the published merleau-ponty-1968-visible-and-invisible does not contain the strict "Circularity, but rather precession" wording (the Lefort-edited V&I is in raw/ and was searched: it contains the Time and chiasm working note but not the Grand Résumé revision). The strict philological revision claim rests on Carbone's reading of de Saint Aubert's inventory, not on independently reproducible raw evidence within this audit.
  • The but rather (German: eher; French: plutôt) is interpretively load-bearing and Carbone reads it as a categorical replacement; a more cautious reading would treat circularity and precession as compatible, with precession as the more precise version.

Payoff

The claim re-organizes precession to track two distinct MP motifs under one term: vision-precession (this claim, Carbone's reading) and earth-precession (Chouraqui's reading via claims#circulus-vitiosus-deus-mp-ontology-of-ontology). Without it, the wiki collapses the two routes; with it, the philological precision is preserved. For Paper A's late-MP track, this anchors the precession-supplants-circularity move that connects the chiasm working note (Nov 1960) to the Eye and Mind "precession" passage (1961).

Status History

  • 2026-05-09 — created as live (Phase 8 thirteenth run, Layer 2 backfill harvest under user pre-authorization). Targeted raw-source check #2 partial: the broader textual base for the precession motif (V&I Nov 1960 Time and chiasm note + Eye and Mind "precession" passage) is verified in raw; the strict Grand Résumé "Circularity, but rather precession" revision is in unpublished manuscript marginalia per de Saint Aubert's inventory and is not independently verifiable in the Lefort-edited V&I within this audit. The narrow philological revision claim rests on Carbone's reading; the broader vision-precession-as-mutual-temporal-antecedence claim is anchored. 3-test gate passes on the broader anchor; the narrow revision claim is recorded with raw-check status in Counterpressure.
