Logique de fait
Merleau-Ponty's 1946 figure for the rationality history exhibits in fact — without the necessity of formal logic, without the abstraction of Kantian transcendental logic, without the closure of Hegelian Wissenschaft der Logik. Logique de fait is logic in the indicative: a logic that holds only because it is exemplified, not because it deduces. The term first appears in MP's Brussels conference L'individu et l'histoire (March 1946) and is the conclusion-formula of Optimisme et Pessimisme. Recurs under the closely-related label logique de l'histoire; Dalissier's Inédits I Glossary entry "Logique de l'histoire" (p. 474) gives MP's own working definition.
Key Points
- The 1946 birthplace: "Gestalt. Exemple mélodie chantée par quelqu'un: ce n'est ni idée préconçue (par individu ou par Dieu) ni somme de notes ou hasards — logique de fait" (Inédits I p. 193). The melody is the paradigm: not predesigned, not random, but organized as it goes.
Logique de fait is more logic than 18th-century rationalism (it covers the affective, the contingent, the recalcitrant) and less logic than late-Hegelian Wissenschaft (it does not close).
Each dialogue is the commencement — not the realization — of rationality. Dialogues do not realize a pre-given rationality; they begin one.
- In the Liberté/Leibniz course, the figure becomes "fait-valeur": "même l'évidence reste toujours un fait... description de la condition humaine: nous sommes fait-valeur" (p. 316). The Cartesian cogito is itself a fact-logic: the fact of thinking is what one returns to, not the idea of thinking.
- The 1947 conclusion is not despair but the refusal of either pole — pure rationalism (Voltaire, Spinoza, Kant) or pure absurdism (Sartrean passion inutile read flatly). The logic of fact is the third position: contingence, non absurde — contingency that is not absurdity, because it is organized as it goes.
What the Concept Does
Logique de fait names the rationality available to a finite subject who is inside history and cannot adopt the Sirius-position. It performs three argumentative functions:
-
It refuses the dichotomy: necessary truth or arbitrary contingency. The fact is neither the deduced consequence of a prior axiom nor a brute meaningless event. It is what organizes itself once it occurs — the melody, the dialogue, the historical moment. (Inédits I p. 193: the melody example.)
-
It conditions reprise and pente-de-l-histoire. Without a logic of fact, the slope of history is either the necessity Hegel claims or the chaos Aron claims; reprise is either repetition or arbitrary creation. Logique de fait gives reprise its normativity-without-necessity: the past structures the future enough to be reprised, not enough to determine it.
-
It frames MP's anti-pessimist reading of existentialism. "Existentialisme = contradictions, lutte, contingence, raison dans la déraison sans garantie = tout cela, qui est existentialisme, est notre temps lui-même. Non désespoir" (p. 215). Logique de fait is what the existentialist has against despair: not a guarantee, but a commencement of rationality in each dialogue, each engagement, each act.
What It Rejects
- Voltairean rationalism (rationalism sommaire): MP rejects the simplistic equation man = idées-claires + besoins corporels. Logique de fait covers the affective, the contingent, the inter-subjective — registers Voltairean rationalism either ignores or misexplains.
- Hegelian closure (Wissenschaft der Logik / Encyclopédie): MP refuses the moment when the logic of fact becomes the logic of God. The fact does not close; "il faut suivre l'expérience de la conscience et non se mettre à sa place."
- Sartrean absurdism flat-read: "L'homme est une passion inutile" flatly taken would license the despair MP rejects. Logique de fait is the figure that holds Sartre's negativity and refuses Sartre's despair.
- Aronian arbitrariness: there is no plurality of mises-en-perspective without internal weight; the slope of history is a logic, of fact.
- Bossuet-style providential plan: there is no plan; there is organization-as-it-goes.
Stakes
If logique de fait is real, then (i) historical rationality is post hoc — it appears in fact, not before; (ii) judgment is possible without omniscience: we can tell that some attitudes ("fortuites, fausses, menteuses," p. 195) fail and are éliminées comme par sélection naturelle; (iii) the 1946 question "comment savoir jusqu'à quel point il faut avoir confiance et jusqu'à quel point il faut juger?" (p. 196) has answers in fact — the answer comes with the dialogue's commencement of rationality, not before; (iv) marxism is the philosophy of history because it understands history as a fact-logic in motion.
If logique de fait is not real, then either pure necessity (Hegel) or pure contingency (Aron) follows; either way, individual judgment becomes either redundant or arbitrary.
Connections
- is paired with reprise — fact-logic is the content that reprise takes up; reprise is the act of taking up the fact-logic.
- is paired with pente-de-l-histoire — fact-logic is what gives the slope its direction (without making it a guarantee).
- is the condition of intelligibility of homme-en-porte-a-faux — the cantilevered being lives by fact-logic, not by formal logic or absolute negativity.
- contrasts with Hegelian Wissenschaft der Logik — closure rejected.
- contrasts with Aronian mise en perspective — multiplicity-without-weight rejected.
- contrasts with Sartrean absurde — negativity-without-rationality-of-fact rejected.
- enacts MP's "double front" — against abstract spiritualism and against historicist relativism (per La Tradition française et l'existentialisme, Inédits I p. 300).
- is a reformulation of Hegel's concrete universal — same target, but without sublation.
- is the figure for which the Liberté/Leibniz course's "fait-valeur" (p. 316) is the metaphysical correlate.
Solutions exist because logique de fait gives them weight; failure is the background of any historical success, not the cancellation of it.
Open Questions
- Does logique de fait survive into V&I's vocabulary? The working notes 1959–61 use vérité-à-faire (truth-to-be-made) — possibly the same figure under a different name.
- Logique de fait vs. Lefort's logique de la position (1972 onward): there is a Lefort-MP genealogy here that the wiki has not traced.
- The 1946 melody example: what is the source? Hegel? Bergson? Köhler/Wertheimer (Gestalt)? The example is paradigmatic across MP's career (PhP, 1946 conferences, V&I) but its first attribution is open.
