Khôra
The third kind (triton genos) introduced in Plato's Timaeus (48e–53c) beside being (Form) and becoming (copy): the receptacle "in which" all becoming appears — named by an irreducible cluster of metaphors (receptacle hypodochē, "wetnurse" tithēnē, "mother" mētēr, "the in which," and "space" chōra). It is invisible, formless, eternal, indestructible, and all-receiving while never itself taking on any character — and it is graspable only by "a kind of bastard reasoning (logismos nothos) that does not involve sense perception… as in a dream" (52b). The khôra is the wiki's pre-existing tag (and a HUB motif) whose primary source the Timaeus ingest now supplies.
Key Points
- A "this" that is no "this". The four "elements" constantly turn into one another, so none is a stable this; we therefore need that in which they fleetingly appear — "everything that exists must of necessity be somewhere" (52b). The receptacle is what gives becoming a "fixed seat."
- Characterless by function, not by accident. An imprint-medium with a character of its own "could not successfully copy" alien characters — "it would be showing its own face" (50e). Neutrality is required by universal receptivity; the gold analogy (you may only safely call the reshaped gold "gold," never any shape it takes, 50b) is the model.
- Three principles, not two (52d): being, chōra, becoming — "three distinct things" that exist "before the universe came to be." The khôra co-precedes the Forms and the cosmos.
- A pre-cosmic ordering by Necessity. Shaken "like… winnowing sieves" (52e), the receptacle pre-sorts the four powers by likeness into regions before the demiurge's geometrical work — order arising from the "errant cause," which Intellect only "persuades."
- An anomalous cognition for an anomalous object. Neither understanding (which grasps Forms) nor opinion-with-perception (which grasps becoming) reaches the khôra: only "bastard reasoning," dreamlike and "hardly even an object of conviction" (52b).
What the Concept Does
- Re-founds the cosmology. The khôra is not an addition but a correction: Timaeus declares the two-kind scheme insufficient and "go[es] back once again to the beginning" (48b) — and the corrected account is "more likely" than the first (48d). The whole prior cosmology is shown to have presupposed an unthematized container.
- Names the place of appearance as such. It answers "where does a copy come to be?" with a principle that is neither the intelligible original nor the sensible copy — a placeless place that makes the original/copy distinction operable.
What It Rejects
- The sufficiency of the being/becoming bipartition — the very dualism the early Timaeus (and much of the corpus) relies on.
- Identification of the receptacle with any character — including, against later readers, with "matter," "body," or any determinate stuff. It is the condition for characters, not one of them.
Stakes
The khôra is the classical antecedent of every later attempt to think a "third" register that is neither subject nor object, neither being nor non-being — and so it is the genealogical root of the wiki's matrix / "third domain" / "not-nothing" cluster. But its appropriation is itself the contested question (see Positions): the concept may resist being made one term of any analogy.
Positions
- Aristotle (Physics IV): the receptacle conflates space, matter, and substratum — a muddle. The standing ancient objection.
- Derrida ("Khôra"): the triton genos breaks the logic of participation and of the example itself — being neither sensible nor intelligible, it is the "placeless place" that founds the oppositions (sensible/intelligible, presence/absence) and so cannot be made one term of an analogy. This is a load-bearing false-friend caution for the wiki: any khôra↔flesh or khôra↔matrix link is a candidate parallel under suspicion, never an identity.
- The matrix/MP reception (Kaushik, Carbone): MP's "being-hollow" and Kaushik's "matrixed ontology" are read as khôra-cognate level-opening structures;
motifs.mdhomes the cross-tradition genealogy Plato → Schelling → MP/Kaushik/Carbone. The Timaeus supplies this genealogy's missing primary anchor. See claims#khora-third-kind-mp-third-domain (candidate).
Connections
- contrasts with theory-of-forms — the khôra is the one thing in the Timaeus that is neither a Form nor a copy; the Forms' "other."
- contrasts with flesh — flesh is sensible, reversible, "the element of the perceived"; khôra is invisible, characterless, explicitly not sensible. A candidate structural parallel ("third register midway between individual and idea") held under Derrida's caution; see claims#khora-third-kind-mp-third-domain (candidate).
- has cross-tradition cousin matrixed-ontology — the level-opening "matrix" in which determinations appear; the Platonic root of the cross-tradition matrix/receptacle motif. (Retyped 2026-06-23 from the register-over-strong
*shares mechanism with*per coherence §B#1: this is cross-tradition reception under Derrida's resists-analogy caution, not a shared mechanism. See claims#khora-third-kind-mp-third-domain, candidate.) - contrasts with mythical-time regarding time — the Timaeus's "moving image of eternity" (37d) is the likely root of "time-as-image" talk, but Timaeus' time is presentist (tense a defect), the near-inverse of mythical time's "past that was never present."
- contrasts with MP's "element" (flesh) — Plato's four "elements" are mathematically reducible to triangles; MP borrows the word "element" (for flesh) while rejecting its reductive-atomist content.
Motif Weight & Corpus Recurrence
Tracked at corpus level in motifs under §"matrix / matrixed ontology / khôra / receptacle / level-opening" as a HUB motif (6 sources after the 2026-06-21 Timaeus primary-anchor addition; cross-tradition: Plato → Schelling → MP's initiation + Kaushik's matrixed ontology + Carbone's "hollow as khôra" + Knight's primordial-waters). The Timaeus ingest supplied the genealogy's previously missing primary-source anchor: motifs.md now registers Plato Timaeus as the primary root and khora as a wiki home. Refresh both when corpus weight shifts.
Open Questions
- Does the khôra-as-matrix reception (Kaushik/Carbone) survive Derrida's objection that the khôra resists analogical appropriation? Or is each such reading already a "showing of its own face" the khôra forbids?
- Is the khôra "space," "matter," "substratum," or none of these? The cluster of names (and Zeyl's rendering "space" at 52a vs. "receptacle" elsewhere) is itself part of the concept's resistance to fixing.
- How does the Timaeus's "bastard reasoning" relate to MP's oblique/non-thetic modes of access? A low-confidence flag worth a future scan, not an assertion.
