Mythical Time

Merleau-Ponty's name for the past that has never been present — a temporal register beyond the chronological-presentist horizon, anchored in the April 1960 V&I working note "Indestructible Past" ("architectonic past… mythical time, time before time, 'farther than India and China'", VI 296/243). The phrase names a structural feature of consciousness's relation to its non-anterior depths and has become a cross-source motif aggregating four distinct rival readings.

Key Points

  • The canonical anchor is the April 1960 V&I working note "Indestructible Past": "architectonic past… mythical time, time before time, 'farther than India and China'" (VI 296/243). PhP 289/242 supplies the prior formulation "past which was never present" that the late-MP register radicalizes.
  • Four rival readings on the wiki, each anchored differently — (i) Carbone's psychoanalytic-temporal register via Proust + Freud + the April 1960 working note; (ii) Knight's cosmological-emanative reading via Plotinus's Ennead IV.3.26 "Lethean body"; (iii) Décarie-Daigneault's singular-deferred-dialogical register via the cave-painting / Crooked Finger encounter (where the wiki coins passence); (iv) Caraus's political-historical reading via the proletariat-as-institution as transtemporal chain.
  • Distinct from but cognate with transtemporality: mythical time names the vertical/depth operator on consciousness's non-anterior depths; transtemporality names the horizontal/cross-temporal operator. They share the same MP anchor formula but operate distinct registers (motifs.md §"trans-temporality / coherent coexistence of heterogeneous temporalities").
  • Promotion history in motifs.md: THEME (2 Carbone sources) → STRUCTURAL (+ Knight 2024) → STRUCTURAL+ (+ Carbone 2004) → HUB-tier (+ DD 2024) → HUB confirmed (+ M-C 2026). 6-source attestation with 4 explicit rival readings; promotion to a dedicated concept page is the natural next step.

Connections

  • is the temporal register of wild-being — the past-that-was-never-present is one register in which wild Being shows itself; Morris 2024's temporal extension of wild being intersects here.
  • grounds passence — DD 2024's neologism for the singular-signed register of mythical time; coined to name the modality of the deceased-other (Crooked Finger) inhabiting one's present.
  • is the vertical register of which transtemporality is the horizontal register — both anchor in MP's "past which was never present" formula; motifs.md §"trans-temporality" articulates the distinction.
  • contrasts with Bergsonian durée — both refuse linear-presentist time, but Bergson's durée is continuous-flow whereas MP's mythical time is non-anterior depth (no past moment was ever present).
  • contrasts with Heideggerian Gewesenheit — both refuse purely-pastward temporal direction, but Heidegger's Gewesenheit is what-still-is-as-having-been whereas mythical time is what-was-never-present-as-such.
  • is read through Plotinus Ennead IV.3.26 by knight-2024-merleau-ponty-essence-of-nature (Lethean body register).
  • is read through Proust + Freud by carbone-2004-thinking-of-the-sensible (psychoanalytic-temporal register).
  • contrasts with the *Timaeus*'s "moving image of eternity" — likely the classical root of "time-as-image" discourse, but Timaeus' time is ordered, numbered, and presentist (only "is" of being; tense a defect), the near-inverse of mythical time's past-that-was-never-present. Genealogy with inversion, not continuity; see khora.

Motif Weight & Corpus Recurrence

This concept is tracked at corpus level in motifs under §"mythical time / past-that-has-never-been-present / Lethe / immemorial past" as a HUB-tier THEMES motif (promoted across 4 stages 2026-04-28b → 2026-05-07), attested across 6 sources with 4 explicit rival readings. For the live attestation list, source-level weights, and the cross-author distinction notes (Carbone vs Knight vs DD vs Caraus), see motifs.md. Refresh whenever motifs.md weight changes.

Open Questions

  • The four rival readings (Carbone-psychoanalytic vs Knight-Plotinian vs DD-singular-deferred vs Caraus-political-transtemporal) share the MP "past which was never present" anchor but each sets it in a different register. Does a synthetic reading exist that subsumes all four, or are they genuinely distinct senses of one MP formula? motifs.md flags this as an open adjudication.
  • Relationship to transtemporality — Pass 3 follow-up scan 2026-05-17 (wiki/.audit/weave-pass3-2026-05-17-followup/scan-A-mythical-transtemporality.md) tested the pair and returned PARTIAL with axis-(ii)+/axis-(iii)- Latent-Adjacent signature: axis-(ii) substitute aligned (both are non-presentist temporal operators in vertical/horizontal register-pair), but axis-(iii) grounding diverges categorially (depth-toward-ontology vs comportment-toward-ethics-and-hermeneutics). The distinction IS load-bearing; unification under a single "non-presentist temporal architecture" page is NOT warranted because the two pages do different downstream work. The vertical/horizontal typed-connection captures the axis-(ii) alignment correctly; the divergence at axis-(iii) is what justifies separate pages. See the scan report for the full triple.
  • The Plotinian provenance (Knight 2024) intersects with MP's 1929 diplôme thesis on Plotinus (lost text); whether the Lethean-body register is a 1929-era inheritance reactivated in 1960 V&I is unrecoverable without the lost thesis but worth flagging.
  • The political-historical Caraus reading (proletariat-as-institution as transtemporal-trans-spatial chain across Cynics → Haitian → Communards → ...) is the newest register (2026-05-07); whether it is continuous with the psychoanalytic-Carbone reading or a genuinely distinct register is the open M-C-2026-era question.
