The Philebus's apeiron and the Timaeus's khôra are same-author cousins — formless substrates a determining principle informs — playing distinct ontological roles

ID: peras-apeiron-khora-cousins Title: The Philebus's apeiron and the Timaeus's khôra are same-author cousins — formless substrates a determining principle informs — playing distinct ontological roles Status: retired Confidence: medium Claim type: structural-parallel Created: 2026-06-21 Updated: 2026-06-23 Sources: plato-philebus, plato-timaeus Wiki homes: peras-apeiron, khora

Claim

The apeiron (the formless "more-and-less" continuum that peras informs) and the khôra (the formless receptacle that the Forms inform) are same-author cousins — both formless substrates on which a determining principle works to produce determinate/measured being. But they play distinct roles: the apeiron is a quality-range ("the more and less") and the first of the Philebus's four kinds; the khôra is a place/receptacle and the third kind of the Timaeus; the khôra receives copies of Forms, the apeiron is measured into being by limit.

Evidence

  • plato-philebus — the apeiron as formless more-and-less, first kind (23e–25a). Extraction-anchored.
  • plato-timaeus — the khôra as receptacle / third kind (48e–52d). Extraction-anchored (.extraction-plato-timaeus.md).

Counterpressure / Limits

  • The differences may be deep enough that "cousins" overstates: Derrida's caution that the khôra "resists analogical appropriation" applies a fortiori to any apeiron↔khôra assimilation.
  • The two may be distinct solutions to distinct problems (cosmology vs the human good) that merely share a thin "formless substrate" abstraction.

Payoff

Connects the Wave-2 peras-apeiron to the Wave-1 khora and to the khôra/matrix/receptacle HUB motif, with the disanalogy explicit — preventing a lazy apeiron = khôra identification while registering a genuine same-author family resemblance.

Status History

  • 2026-06-21 — created at candidate (ingest Wave 2). Contestable (cousins vs thin-abstraction; Derrida caution); both poles extraction-anchored.
  • 2026-06-23 — audit v1.9 Phase 8 disposition: HELD at candidate (a cross-tradition cousin relation is below claim-grade by design — bridge-card-signoff §12e). Classified RELATION-ONLY: flagged for retire-and-relocate to a *has cross-tradition cousin* typed connection + a motifs.md BRIDGE entry by the follow-up cross-tradition weave run (retirement will HALT for user confirmation; the entry is preserved with reasoning). Disanalogy recorded in Counterpressure; false-friend audit PASSED (Phase 1).
  • 2026-06-23 — RETIRED (cross-tradition weave run, maintainer-confirmed): relation-only intra-Plato (same-author) cousin — routed out of the cross-tradition BRIDGE layer (motifs-delta §2; a BRIDGE links traditions). Relocated to a *contrasts with* typed connection on peras-apeironkhora (the register-over-strong *shares mechanism with* downgraded per coherence §B#2). No motifs.md BRIDGE entry (same-author). Entry preserved.
