Heidegger's *Walten* names an "ultra-sovereign" sovereignty that exceeds and precedes political-theological sovereignty — the latter is derivative of *Walten* (Derrida BS-II)
ID: walten-exceeds-onto-theological-sovereignty Title: Heidegger's Walten names an "ultra-sovereign" sovereignty that exceeds and precedes political-theological sovereignty — the latter is derivative of Walten (Derrida BS-II) Status: live Confidence: medium Claim type: corrective Created: 2026-05-27 Updated: 2026-06-01 Sources: derrida-2002-bete-souverain-ii, heidegger-ga11-identitat-und-differenz Wiki homes: walten, sovereignty, martin-heidegger, derrida-2002-bete-souverain-ii
Claim
Heidegger's *Walten* (deployed superabundantly across his corpus from Die Grundbegriffe der Metaphysik 1929-30 through Einführung in die Metaphysik 1935, "Das Ding" 1950, and Identität und Differenz 1957) names a sovereignty so sovereign that it exceeds and precedes onto-theological sovereignty. Walten is "neither solely political nor solely theological"; it is the prevailing-event that gives (vergibt) the ontological difference between Being and beings. The political-theological sovereignty of the Schmitt / Hobbes / Bodin tradition — including the BS-I thesis of sovereignty-as-auto-position-of-the-ipse — is itself derivative of Walten. Derrida's terminal formula: "Walten would be too sovereign still to be sovereign" (BS-II S10 p. 279). The wiki's BS-I deconstruction of sovereignty thereby acquires a deeper register that the BS-I-side argument did not reach: not just "sovereignty is auto-position of the ipse and therefore deconstructible" but "sovereignty itself is derivative of a more violent ground that no political-theological category can name."
Evidence
- derrida-2002-bete-souverain-ii S2 pp. 32–44 — first introduction of Walten as "ultra-sovereign," "neither solely political nor solely theological"; the physis / Walten identification. Extraction-note Pass 2a argument #4.
- derrida-2002-bete-souverain-ii S9 pp. 252–57 — the climactic reading of Heidegger's Identität und Differenz (1957) — "Im Austrag waltet Lichtung des sich verhüllend Verschließenden"; the Walten der Differenz; the onto-theological constitution of metaphysics as "issuing from" Walten. Extraction-note BS-II Key Passages (S9 pp. 252–57; corrected from a mislabelled "arg #31"). Independently verified against GA11 raw in this Phase-8 run:
raw/…Identität und DifferenzGA11 line 1231 carries "Im Austrag waltet Lichtung des sich verhüllend Verschließenden…" verbatim, and line 1389 carries "Die onto-theologische Verfassung der Metaphysik entstammt dem Walten der Differenz…". - heidegger-ga11-identitat-und-differenz — independently anchors the Heidegger primary text (the Walten der Differenz / Austrag register) that BS-II interprets; the GA11 extraction note already grounds the live sibling claim claims#ga11-austrag-as-wesensherkunft-of-onto-theo-logik on the same passages. GA11 corroborates the textual base; the "ultra-sovereign" interpretive reading remains BS-II's.
- derrida-2002-bete-souverain-ii S10 pp. 279–90 — Derrida's late-life pronouncement: "late in my life of reading Heidegger, I have just discovered a word that seems to oblige me to put everything in a new perspective." The Sophocles Antigone / deinon / Gewalt-tätigkeit chain (the political stakes); the Iraq War as 2003 contemporaneous; the closing question "Who is capable of death, and, through death, of imposing failure on the super- or hyper-sovereignty of Walten?" Extraction-note Pass 2a arguments #31–#34, #40–#41.
- Heidegger primary texts (not yet ingested directly on wiki for this register): Einführung in die Metaphysik (1935) for the superabundant Walten deployment; Identität und Differenz (1957) for the Walten der Differenz climax. heidegger-ga11-identitat-und-differenz is the wiki's existing GA 11 anchor.
- walten concept page (created 2026-05-27 from BS-II ingest) — the wiki's primary articulation of the concept.
Counterpressure / Limits
- The orthodox Heideggerian defense: An orthodox Heideggerian reading would refuse to call Walten "sovereignty" of any kind. Heidegger's whole project is to step out of the metaphysics of subjectivity and mastery into physis as self-showing; reabsorbing Walten under "ultra-sovereign" reapplies the language Heidegger is dismantling. The convergence of Walten with the violence-and-prevailing connotations of political-theological sovereignty (Bodin's majestas, Hobbesian Leviathan) is Derrida's reading-effect, not Heidegger's intent. Derrida acknowledges this counter (S10 implicitly) but holds the Gewalt-tätigkeit lineage (state-creating violence, Sophocles' deinon, staatschaffenden Handelns) shows the political stakes are real even if Heidegger does not name them.
- The Walten / Ereignis substitution question: A Heideggerian could insist that Walten (1929–1957) is structurally cognate with Ereignis (Heidegger's term from Beiträge zur Philosophie onward), drained of any sovereignty register, and that calling it "ultra-sovereign" misreads its character as event-of-appropriation. Derrida's wager — that the violence-connotation distinguishes Walten — is genuinely contestable.
- The "single mobile family" reading-effect: Derrida treats Walten-family terms (walten, durchwalten, Mitwalten, umwalten, verwalten, Verwaltung, Übergewalt, vorwaltend, bewältigen, unbewältigt, Gewalt, Allgewalt, Gewalt-tat, Gewalt-tätigkeit) as a single mobile family. Orthodox Heideggerians could insist these are heterogeneous deployments unified only by Derrida's reading-style. The cross-decade philological argument (1929–1957) is strong but the unity-thesis remains a reading-effect.
- The terminal question is unanswered: The seminar ends in question ("Who is capable of death, and, through death, of imposing failure on the super- or hyper-sovereignty of Walten?"). Derrida did not resume. The claim's structural-philosophical depth is also its structural incompleteness: we do not know what the resolution would have been.
- Dual-source for the philology; single-source for the corrective thesis: As of the 2026-06-01 GR18 check, heidegger-ga11-identitat-und-differenz (GA 11 = Identität und Differenz) independently anchors the Heidegger textual base — the Walten der Differenz / Austrag / entstammt-onto-theology register is present verbatim in the GA11 raw (lines 1231, 1389), in the GA11 extraction note (the Austrag-as-Wesensherkunft material), and already grounds the live claim claims#ga11-austrag-as-wesensherkunft-of-onto-theo-logik. What GA11 does not supply is the interpretive leap that reads Walten as "ultra-sovereign sovereignty" exceeding the theologico-political — GA11's own framing of walten is the non-political prevailing/holding-sway sense. So the claim is now dual-source for its Heidegger philology but single-source (BS-II) for the corrective "ultra-sovereign" thesis. Einführung in die Metaphysik (1935) — the other text the claim leans on for the superabundant Walten deployment — remains un-ingested and BS-II-reported.
Payoff
- Without the claim: the wiki's sovereignty page records BS-I's auto-position-of-ipse and Chouraqui's embodiment-reciprocity as two paths to the deconstruction-of-sovereignty thesis; BS-II's deeper register would remain scattered across the walten and martin-heidegger pages without a thesis-form anchor.
- With the claim: the wiki has a thesis-form anchor for the third path (BS-II's Walten-register) — the deepest deconstruction-of-sovereignty register on the wiki, exceeding both the BS-I and Chouraqui paths. The cross-source convergence question (do all three paths constitute one deconstruction or three?) acquires its sharpest formulation here. Future ingests of Heidegger primary texts (especially Einführung in die Metaphysik 1935 and direct Identität und Differenz 1957 reading) have a wiki-claim to corroborate or modify.
- For the post-9/11 / Iraq War register: the Walten / Gewalt-tätigkeit / staatschaffenden Handelns / eidos-as-victory chain in S10 reads the 2003 Iraq War as a contemporary consummation of the eidos-by-war structure. The wiki acquires a Derridean diagnostic of state-founding violence that is not anticipatory but contemporaneous — written six days into the war.
- For claims#sovereignty-as-untenable-autoposition (live): the Walten-claim deepens but does not contradict the BS-I-side claim. Sovereignty as auto-position of the ipse (BS-I) is shown to be derivative of Walten (BS-II); both can be true simultaneously, with the BS-II-side being the deeper register.
Status History
- 2026-05-27 — created at candidate at BS-II ingest. Three-test gate: (T1) contestable — yes, the orthodox Heideggerian refusal of the "ultra-sovereign" reading is non-trivial. (T2) anchored in BS-II extraction-note Pass 2a #4, #31–#34, #40–#41 and the corresponding raw passages. (T3) counterpressure recorded (Heideggerian defense; Ereignis substitution; single-mobile-family reading-effect; terminal question; single-source). Held at candidate; promotion to live deferred until either Heidegger primary-source ingest of Einführung in die Metaphysik or Identität und Differenz-for-this-register, or secondary scholarship on Heidegger's Walten. Phase 8 audit candidate.
- 2026-06-01 — promoted candidate→live (audit Phase 8, 17th run; user pre-authorization). The deferral condition — "Identität und Differenz-for-this-register" — is met: a General-Rule-18 targeted source check (delegated subagent) confirmed that GA11 (= Identität und Differenz) corroborates the Walten der Differenz / Austrag reading at all three wiki layers (raw lines 1231 + 1389 verbatim; extraction note's Austrag-as-Wesensherkunft material; the already-live sibling claims#ga11-austrag-as-wesensherkunft-of-onto-theo-logik).

The "ultra-sovereign" interpretive thesis remains BS-II's reading-effect (recorded in Counterpressure), so confidence holds atmediumand the claim stays belowsupported. Evidence-label hygiene fix applied (I&D leg re-anchored from a mislabelled "arg #31" to the Key-Passages locus).
