Pure Logical Grammar

Investigation IV's doctrine (husserl-1901-logical-investigations-vol2): meanings — the ideal unities of ideality-of-meaning — stand under a priori laws of combination, and the theory of these laws, the Formenlehre der Bedeutungen, is "a first, basic sphere" of pure-logic that the logic of validity presupposes. The mereology of parts-and-wholes transposes into the meaning-realm (Husserl's own derivation: the founded-content law "naturally passed over from the real (real) to the ideal realm"): syncategorematica ("and," "but," "father's") carry genuine but non-independent meanings — against Bolzano's meaning-per-word over-attribution and against the "meaningless particles" deflation. Combination-laws range over semantic categories, not singular meanings: substitution within a category preserves unified sense however "false, foolish, ridiculous" the result; crossing categories ("This careless is green") yields "only a word-series… we do not, in principle, achieve a closed unity of sense" — and "It is an analytic truth that the forms in a whole cannot function as its materials" (§10).

Key Points

  • Unsinn vs. Widersinn (§§12, 14) — the load-bearing two-tier distinction: "a round square" means (a unified meaning "having its mode of 'existence'… in the realm of ideal meanings" to which, apodictically, no object can correspond) — that is absurdity (Widersinn); "a round or" has no meaning at all — that is nonsense (Unsinn). The laws averting nonsense (pure grammar) are prior to and different in kind from the laws averting absurdity (Contradiction, Modus Ponens — "laws of the avoidance of formal absurdity," the apophantic analytic). Philological caution: Findlay's Introduction locally renders Widersinn "nonsense" — build on the §§12/14 usage (extraction note, Coverage).
  • Meaning-modification (§11): apparent counterexamples ("'And' is a non-independent meaning") are rule-governed a priori shifts — suppositio materialis, presentation-of-a-meaning, nominalization — "belong[ing] to the grammatically normal stock-in-trade of every language."
  • The form-system is ideal and language-invariant (§14): an "idealized form of speech" every empirical language "will fill up and clothe differently" — licensing the question "How does German, Latin, Chinese… express 'the' categorical proposition, 'the' plural, 'the' modalities?" The rationalists' grammaire générale et raisonnée is expressly rehabilitated.
  • Grammar's anti-psychologism (Intro, Notes 2–3): against Marty's housing of these findings in the psychology of language — "we should ultimately have to class arithmetic… in — psychology"; the "great Kantian insight": "one does not enrich, but rather subverts, the sciences if one blurs their boundaries." The psychologism refutation acquires a grammatical front.
  • Naming (Note 1): 1st ed. "pure grammar" (after Kant's "pure science of nature"); 2nd ed. prefers "pure logical grammar," since formal semantics does not exhaust grammar's a priori — there is also "a peculiar a priori governing relations of mutual understanding" (a one-line pointer toward a pragmatics never written).

What the Concept Does

It supplies what the Prolegomena only listed: the combination-system of the "categories of meaning" (task 1 of pure-logic), modeled on arithmetic — primitive forms ("M and N," "If M then N," "Sp") each carrying "an a priori law of existence," derived forms deduced by substitution "in infinitum": "the a priori constitution of the meaning-realm." It thereby answers the pure-logic page's standing Open Question: pure grammar is not a fourth task but the lowest tier, "the abstractly possible forms of meaning, whose objective value it then becomes [logic's] first task to determine" (§14). In Investigation VI the tier reappears act-theoretically: the laws of inauthentic (signitive) thinking are identified with these logico-grammatical laws (§63; see categorial-intuition).

What It Rejects

  • Bolzano's over-attribution (every conjunction its own presentation) and the deflationary "only the whole means."
  • The grounding of the categorematic/syncategorematic distinction at the level of sound or script — the distinction is semantic, its surface registration grammatical (§7); within the word, the meaning-layer and the sensuous word-body have different non-independences ('and' vs. the fragment 'fu', §5 — a refinement of expression-and-indication's three-act structure).
  • Psychologistic and purely empirical grammar; Marty's placement of the a priori findings.
  • The collapse of absurdity into meaninglessness (which would re-open Inv I §15's problem — even to reject the round square one must mean it).

Stakes

Two. (1) For logic: "Logic accordingly lacks its prime foundation" without the Formenlehre (Note 3 — "not even Bolzano" conceived it); the sense/nonsense tier is where logic's subject-matter is constituted at all. (2) For the corpus's language-thinking: this is the maximal antithesis inside Husserl to every account on which grammar is sedimented history or embodied practice — the ideal form-framework "every language fills differently" is precisely what the Merleau-Ponty corpus's living-language pages (speaking-spoken-speech, indirect-language) refuse; MP's "On the Phenomenology of Language" already plays the Origin of Geometry's incarnate language against "the eidetic of grammar" (see edmund-husserl, Sources) — with this page the primary text of that target is in the corpus.

  • The "a priori of mutual understanding" (Note 1) is announced and never developed — did Husserl's later work (or the Munich school's speech-act seeds noted at expression-and-indication) redeem it? Genealogical thread for a future ingest.
  • How far does the semantic-category apparatus survive translation into languages whose surface grammar diverges radically (the §14 question turned empirical)? The text asserts invariance; adjudication would need linguistics sources outside this corpus.
