Material A Priori

The doctrine minted in Investigation III §§11–12 (husserl-1901-logical-investigations-vol2): the sphere of essence divides into the formal — contentless categories "grouped round the empty notion of Something or Object as such" (Whole, Part, One, Relation) — and the material — the highest contentful Genera (Colour, Tone, Space, Sensation) that root "material ontologies." "This cardinal division… gives us the true distinction between the analytically a priori and the synthetically a priori disciplines" (§11). The criterion is exact (§12): an analytic law survives total formalization — "it must be possible, without altering the proposition's logical form, to replace all material which has content, with an empty formal Something, and to eliminate every assertion of existence" ("this house's existence includes its roof's" → "a whole W(A,B,C…) includes its parts"); a synthetic a priori law is a pure law that resists such formalization salva veritate. The exhibition-case comes from §11: "A colour cannot exist without something coloured" is necessary in virtue of its content — colour is "unthinkable" without something coloured — not as correlative-term triviality: "'Colour' is not a relative expression, whose meaning includes the idea of a relation to something else" (§11). Husserl claims priority over Kant in the same breath: the classical points "do not deserve to be called 'classical'" (§12 Note 1).

What the Concept Does

It gives descriptive phenomenology its license to legislate: every eidetic claim about perception, meaning, or act-structure in the later Investigations — and in the phenomenological tradition after them — is a material-a-priori claim in this section's sense. Within the wiki it also completes pure-logic from below: the Prolegomena's formal categories presupposed a formal/material line they never drew; §11 draws it, and in doing so defines what pure logic is not about (content) as exactly as what it is.

Stakes

The doctrine is the hinge on which "phenomenology as rigorous science" turns: without a synthetic a priori of content, description could yield only empirical generalities, and the anti-psychologism of Volume I would strand the Investigations of Volume II. Downstream, the concept is a genealogical seed the corpus can now track: the Crisis's "universal a priori of the life-world" occupies the same structural slot (a contentful, pre-formal a priori) — whether by descent or re-invention is a deferred question (seed noted in the extraction note's Part D, pending a targeted Crisis §§36–37 check; not a registered claim).
