Intentionality

The founding doctrine of Investigation V (husserl-1901-logical-investigations-vol2): consciousness, in the sense that matters to phenomenology, is a class of experiences — acts, "intentional experiences" — whose descriptive essence is directedness upon an object: "in perception something is perceived, in love something loved, in hate hated" (§10). Husserl inherits the term from franz-brentano and transforms it by subtraction: the "psychical phenomena" classification is dropped, "all thought of activity must be rigidly excluded" (§13), and — decisively — the "immanent object" is abolished: "there are not two things present in experience… only one thing is present, the intentional experience, whose essential descriptive character is the intention in question" (§11). The intentional object "is the same as its actual object… it is absurd to distinguish between them" (Appendix to §§11/20) — whether Jupiter, a round square, or this box: existence is indifferent to directedness. What remains in the act really (reell) are sensations, which are precisely not intentional ("I do not see colour-sensations but coloured things") but the material an "animating interpretation" (Auffassung) ensouls. The wiki's long-standing [[intentionality]] stub resolves to this page.

Key Points

  • Three concepts of consciousness (§§1–8): the stream-unity of experiences; inner awareness; and the act — kept apart because conflating the first two with the third generated Brentano's regress (inner perception of every experience, ad infinitum, §5) and the "box" model.
  • Irreducibly many act-species (§10): presentation, judgement, surmise, hope, approval differ a priori in kind — no manufacture of act-types out of presentations plus non-intentional ingredients. Conversely, not every experience is an act: sensations and their complexes are lived through, not directed.
  • Quality and matter (§20): the act's two moments — quality = the mode (judging, questioning, wishing); matter = "the interpretative sense" (Auffassungssinn), fixing "not merely… the object meant in a general way, but also the precise way in which it is meant." Matter is finer than object-direction: "equilateral triangle" and "equiangular triangle" present the same object "in a different fashion."
  • Intentional and semantic essence (§21): quality + matter = the intentional essence; functioning expressively, the semantic essence, whose "ideational abstraction… yields a 'meaning' in our ideal sense" — the act-side instance of ideality-of-meaning's meaning-species (Husserl's own back-reference to Inv I §12).
  • The ego, rejected and recanted (§§4, 8, 12): in 1901 the phenomenological ego is "simply identical with [the] interconnected unity" of experiences — "I am quite unable to find this ego" (against paul-natorp); the ego-as-centre is "a product of reflection" that appears only when "we no longer live in" the act. The 2nd edition reverses course in three layers of notes, ending at "I have since managed to find it" (endnote 8) — the volume's most visible genetic hinge toward the Ideas.
  • Objectifying acts (§§22–45): Brentano's principle ("every act is a presentation or founded on presentations") is refuted on its natural reading — a percept is not presentation + belief (the waxworks analysis, §27), judgement is not presentation + a "deciding note" (§28), assent is a fulfilment-transition (§29) — and re-established on a new concept: naming and asserting form one qualitative genus, differentiated into positing/non-positing (quality) and single-rayed nominal / many-rayed propositional (matter), bridged by nominalization. The result: "Each intentional experience is either an objectifying act or has its basis in such an act"; "all matter… is the matter of an objectifying act" (§41). Only objectifying acts give objects; joys, wishes, volitions are secondary intentions founded on them.
  • The §44 disambiguation: "presentation" (Vorstellung) carries a "fourfold or fivefold" core ambiguity (matter/representation; mere presentation; nominal act; objectifying act) plus a train of others — the most-cited taxonomy of the Investigation, and the model of Husserl's disambiguation-as-method.

What the Concept Does

It converts Volume I's ontology into a workable descriptive science. The Prolegomena secured ideal meanings and laws; Investigation V supplies the act-architecture in which they are had: meaning grounded in the semantic essence of objectifying acts, judgement-theory rebuilt without the assent-mythology, and the platform laid for Investigation VI's fulfilment and categorial-intuition (which restrict knowing and meaning-carrying to objectifying acts on the strength of §41). Within the wiki it is also the comparative anchor: the act-intentionality that later phenomenology (operative intentionality, intentional-arc, motor intentionality) defines itself against now has its primary text.

What It Rejects

  • Brentano's "intentional (or mental) inexistence" / "immanent objectivity" gloss — directedness kept, the in-dwelling object discarded (§11).
  • The image-theory and sign-theory of mind: being-an-image "is no 'real predicate'," and interpreting anything as image already presupposes intentionality — regressus in infinitum (Appendix).
  • The two-object doctrine (immanent proxy + transcendent original) "through the centuries — one has only to think of Anselm's ontological argument" (Appendix).
  • The "mythology of activities": acts are not doings of an ego-agent (§13).
  • The attention-spotlight theory: attention is "an emphatic function… among acts," directed only at intentional objects, never at experienced contents as such (§19).

Stakes

If the act-analysis holds, phenomenology has its subject-matter without metaphysical hostages: no immanent duplicates, no ego-principle (in 1901), no activity-myth — only describable act-structures and their ideal correlates. Two stakes reach across the corpus. (1) The reflection-thesis: absorbed act-performance ("we simply 'live' in the act… the ego… becomes quite elusive," §12) versus the reflective precipitation of the ego — the exact seam later phenomenology works; the MP reading of pre-reflective life descends from here but identifying §12's absorption with fungierende Intentionalität would be anachronistic — operative intentionality is late-Husserl vocabulary (via Fink; see edmund-husserl), and Inv V's absorption is act-intentionality described from within (false-friend caution from the extraction note). (2) The recantation-hinge: the 1901 no-ego doctrine and its 1913 reversal give the wiki a dated, primary-text pivot for the transcendental turn (cf. epoche, paradox-of-human-subjectivity).

Positions

  • husserl-1901-logical-investigations-vol2 (1901 stratum): no pure ego; the unity of consciousness self-organizes ("contents have, as contents generally have, their own law-bound ways of coming together," §4).
  • The same volume, 2nd-edition notes (1913 stratum): the pure ego is required — "It is precisely the ego apprehended in carrying out a self-evident cogito" (endnote 6). The book contests itself; both layers are primary text here.
  • paul-natorp (as engaged in §8): consciousness is relation to an ego that "can be no further described" — the position Husserl 1901 dismantles as self-undermining and Husserl 1913 substantially concedes.
  • Unresolved tension: whether §12's "living in the act" (pre-reflective performance) survives the 1913 restoration of the pure ego intact — the Ideas' answer is not in this corpus yet.

Connections

  • is developed by husserl-1901-logical-investigations-vol2 — Investigation V entire; the Appendix supplies the anti-image-theory arguments.
  • transforms franz-brentano's intentionality-thesis — directedness kept; classification, immanent object, and inner-perception evidence-doctrine discarded (the entity page's two-step: refute-as-read, re-establish-as-transformed).
  • is the condition of intelligibility of fulfilment and categorial-intuition — Investigation VI's syntheses are syntheses of objectifying acts; §41 is their license.
  • grounds ideality-of-meaning act-theoretically — §21's semantic essence answers that page's open instantiation question.
  • requires parts-and-wholes — founded acts are Fundierung applied to acts (endnote to §18 cites Investigation III "in the strict sense").
  • contrasts with intentional-arc and the MP corpus's operative register — the reception transforms act-intentionality into a bodily, pre-objective directedness; the Inv V seam (§§12, 19) is where that reading anchors, with the anachronism guard above.
  • is a middle term between franz-brentano's 1874 Psychologie and the Ideas' noesis/noema — endnote 24 to §16 already marks "intentional objectivity as such" as "a distinct descriptive dimension."

Open Questions

  • Does the §41 objectifying-act monopoly survive the challenge of moods and affective disclosure (the later phenomenological tradition's standard objection), or is it an artifact of taking logic's acts as paradigm? Watch at any Scheler/Heidegger-affectivity ingest.
  • The §44 taxonomy's printed enumeration skips a "12" (source-side pathology; extraction note Coverage) — if a critical edition is ever consulted, check whether a sense dropped.
  • How does §12's "living in the act" relate to the Ideas' actionality/inactuality distinction? (Genealogical question; requires an Ideas ingest.)
