Evidenz (Self-Evidence)

Husserl's reinterpretation, in the Prolegomena (husserl-1900-logical-investigations-vol1), of inner evidence from a psychological criterion into an epistemological correlation: "inner evidence is rather nothing but the 'experience' of truth. … Truth is an Idea, whose particular case is an actual experience in the inwardly evident judgement" (Prol. §51). Against the reigning feeling-theory (Mill's "philosophy of evidence"; Höfler–Meinong's logic of the evidence-feeling), Evidenz is "no accessory feeling," not "the sort of mental character that simply lets itself be attached to any and every judgement," but "an experience of primal givenness": "the experience of the agreement between meaning and what is itself present… is inward evidence: the Idea of this agreement is truth, whose ideality is also its objectivity." Findlay renders it "self-evidence"/"inward evidence," warning that the forensic associations of English "evidence" are "fatal to understanding."

Key Points

  • Apodeictic vs assertoric (Prol. §§6, 27): the inner evidence of a law vs of a single existence — the split that defeats the felt-impossibility argument for psychologism: "felt irrefragability so little proves real irrefragability," and valid and fallacious inference feel identically compelling (§31).
  • Ideal vs real conditions of evidence (§50): "A is true" transforms a priori into "it is possible for anyone to judge A to be true in an inwardly evident manner" — but the possibility is ideal, not psychological: the n-body problem "has a solution, and the inner evidence which relates to it is therefore possible" though it transcends every human capacity; there are truths about "decimal numbers with trillions of places." Real conditions (attention, freshness, practice) belong to psychology; ideal conditions to pure-logic.
  • The anti-sceptical bedrock (Inv II §§37, 39): self-evidence of the intentional object under description — "I may be deceived as to the existence of the object of perception, but not as to the fact that I do perceive it as determined in this or that way" — reaching, for really-immanent contents, self-evidence of existence; "where differences are gross, a self-evidence is attainable which renders all doubt unjustifiable."
  • The ultimatum-structure: Prol. §40 stakes everything on insight as "the Archimedean point from which the world of doubt and unreason may be levered on its hinges" — recognize it "or… sacrifice all reason and knowledge." The defense against the feeling-theorist is a re-description plus this ultimatum, not an independent argument (see the source page's Critique).
  • The Inv VI completion — Evidenz as fulfilment-limit (husserl-1901-logical-investigations-vol2, §§36–39): the deferred fulfilment-theory arrives. Strict, "epistemologically pregnant" self-evidence is "the act of this most perfect synthesis of fulfilment" — the object "not merely meant, but in the strictest sense given, and given as it is meant" — the ideal limit of graded fulfilment-syntheses, not a punctual insight; a loose sense with genuine "degrees and levels of self-evidence" is split off (§38). Its correlate is "being in the sense of truth," and §39 distinguishes four truth-concepts (identity-agreement; the Idea of adequation; the given object as fulness; rightness of intention) on this one situation.
  • The §39.1 qualification of the §51 slogan: "The proposition that self-evidence is the 'experience' of truth cannot… be simply interpreted as telling us that the self-evidence is the perception… of truth" — the identifying coincidence "is not as yet an actual perception of objective agreement, but becomes so only through its own act of objectifying interpretation." The LI Evidenz-doctrine is thus two-layered — lived coincidence vs. its categorial objectification — and flattening it to the Prolegomena slogan (as this page did before the Vol. II ingest) misses the mediation (claim candidate li-evidenz-two-layer-correction, routed to the audit Harvest).
  • The evidence-locus relocated (Appendix): the operative Vol. II contrast is adequate vs. inadequate perception — "the intuited object itself really and truly dwells in it" vs. content and object falling asunder — which "intersects the distinction between inner and outer perception" and replaces it as the seat of evidence ("only the perception of one's own actual experiences is indubitable," and only where apprehended "purely, without going apperceptively beyond them" — the toothache deceives). The anti-feeling-theory argument recurs in the givenness-register: "if someone experiences the self-evidence of A, it is self-evident that no second person can experience the absurdity of this same A" (§39).

Connections

  • is the condition of intelligibility of psychologism's refutation — the insight/felt-compulsion split carries the third-prejudice chapter and the syllogism critique.
  • shares mechanism with ideal-species — the self-evidence of the intentional object under description (Inv II §37) is the same bedrock deployed against radical Humeanism.
  • is completed by fulfilment — Investigation VI's fulfilment-theory of truth (husserl-1901-logical-investigations-vol2): adequation, strict/loose Evidenz, the four truth-concepts, and the §39.1 two-layer qualification (the deferral this page carried is discharged, 2026-07-21).
  • shares mechanism with categorial-intuition — the "objectifying interpretation" through which lived coincidence becomes perceived agreement (§39.1) is a categorial act; adequate universal-intuition (§52) is Evidenz in the eidetic register.
  • anticipates the Crisis's "original self-evidences" of the lebenswelt — the late Husserl relocates primal givenness from logical insight to life-world experience; the term's career across the corpus is itself a genealogical datum (cf. husserl-1954-crisis).

Open Questions

  • Is the §51 reinterpretation an answer to the feeling-theorist or a change of subject? (The Vol. I extraction note's Diagnostics marks this the volume's least-argued load-bearing assumption; Inv VI §39's givenness-argument strengthens the answer but arguably converts the sceptic's doubt into a definitional impossibility — see the Vol. II Diagnostics.)
  • How does the Prolegomena's logical-insight paradigm relate to the Crisis's life-world self-evidences — continuity of one concept or homonymy across the transcendental turn? The Inv VI two-layer structure (lived coincidence vs. objectifying interpretation) sharpens the question: what the life-world "original self-evidences" inherit may be the lived layer specifically. (Track at future ingests; Evidenz motif minted at the 2026-07-21 Step 6a — see motifs.)
  • Strict Evidenz is pinned to an adequation never reached for external things (Inv VI §29): is the pregnant sense empirically empty? (The Vol. II Diagnostics lists this among the volume's weak points.)
